He has appeared in many VB threads saying the same things bashing DG and Bolden over and over. I would bet 10-1 that he is a parent or friend of another MI QB from the class of 2010 that is being overshadowed by these 2.

Nothing against AJ Westendorp, but he might want to look for a better guy to run his PR for him. The kid sounds like a decent player, but I went to school at a division 4 (at the time) school around Detroit, and the talent level there simply is not that great compared to higher divisions in this state and outside. Sure, there are some diamonds in the rough, but simply looking at his stats, I'm not sure he would be able to crack the starting lineup at a Big-10 school, especially not at UM with guys like Tate and Robinson also competing for minutes. I wish him the best at CMU, but I don't think this will come back to haunt UM I scan through Varsity Blue every few days, and Grob does seem to show up quite a bit in the comments, usually with some rather crazy rants. Gardner will be a good QB, and hopefully he winds up at UM.

I will get bashed here becuase I am not afraid to admit that I am a homer and live in Holland. I was able to watch Westendorp. I think a better comparison would be him and Dan LeFever. He has all the capabilities of LeFever(sp?). To compare him to Gardner ect. will just not fly. They are two different kinds of athletes and we will never know the future. If he is anything like LeFever then he will be a good fit at CMU. I do think, however, that he is capable of playing in a "tougher" league than the MAC just as Dan LF. If you watched CMU in the last 3 years you will see that Dan could have competed very well in the B10/SEC/Big East/B12. It is what it is. If Westendorp is better than the offers he got, then he will have a chance to put himself and CMU on the map.

Westendorp was offered a scholarship by Western very late in the process. It was because, despite his good size, his speed isn't nearly good enough to make up for his arm strength (even at the high school level, most of his throws longer than 10 yards were ducks). Had Michigan not had Denard Robinson in place, I would have liked to see Michigan take a flier on him, and hope they could develop strength and speed. That said, he's a borderline Division-I guy (if that high - he only had 1 offer, and it came at the last minute). Grob is clearly someone with an interest in Westendorp, who doesn't want to let such trivial things as "fast" stand in his way. Decision-making can be developed, and that's what coaches are for. Strength and speed, while they can be helped by coaching, are generally god-given traits. Like I said, I really liked Westendorp as a backup plan or a preferred-walkon, but comparing him to somebody with the physical skills of Gardner is insane. OK, that's all the arguing I'll do on the topic here, and if anyone wants to debate further, I'll be on VB.

I trust your judgement about his mediocre arm strength and speed, but while I agree that decision-making can be developed, I see the ability to make decisions on the fly as an inate talent. For anyone who believes that any QB can be coached into good decision-making, I have two words for you: Matthew Stafford.

I can see where he is coming from, however I can't explain his love affair with Westendorp. Your choices are: 1) a 6'4 fast as hell kid with a rocket arm who is a high school junior playing against elite level talent. Also he is raw as a passer, has never received good QB instruction, and still performs well. Not to mention recruited by many top level division I schools in his junior year. or 2) a slower, not so strong-armed but solid decision making QB who played against meh-talent in his senior year. I think the choice is obvious.
