Gerry Dinardo: "Jim Harbaugh is all over the map"

Submitted by Bluey on

Comments originated from an interview with a Nebraksa radio station:

“I think Jim’s kind of all over the map,” DiNardo says.

When pressed on his “all over the map” description of Harbaugh, DiNardo makes valid points.

“Well, what offense is he going to run? Who’s calling the plays?” DiNardo asks. “Is (Ole Miss transfer quarterback) Shea Patterson, who’s a spread guy — are they going to put Shea into the pro formation or are they going to take the pro formation and make it a spread formation for Shea?”

Michigan often has been a mess at quarterback since 2015, Harbaugh’s first season there.

What’s more, “They’ve had how many different co-offensive coordinators?” DiNardo says. “Who’s doing what? I mean, it’s a pretty simple question: Who’s calling the plays? Except that’s not a simple question in Ann Arbor. The answer is convoluted. …

“I was on the sideline and watched the Outback Bowl,” he adds, referring to Michigan’s 26-19 loss to an 8-4 South Carolina team. “It doesn’t look like a well-oiled machine to me."

I mean, just take it from a guy with a 59-76 head coaching record

lost More of not, the fact is “Harbaugh can’t win big games,” is seriously overplayed. It seems like it’s only a big game if we lose. People constantly ignore the wins against ranked teams or teams that go on to have great seasons. Not to mention being a dropped punt snap and a blown call away from adding two more of those to the pile. But since you asked: 5-9 in those games. As I mentioned, a bad bounce or two from being 7-7 in those. That’s a long ways away from “can’t win big games.” And that’s ignoring blowing out a ranked BYU, and beating a Colorado team that played in the PAC-12 title game.

then why don't you compare Harbaugh's Michigan record against

OSU
MSU
PSU
Wis
Bowl Games

Pay close attention to whether the team was ranked . . .

vs. the games against Purdue, Indiana, Rutgers, Maryland, etc.?

Michigan HAS lost more "big" games than they have won.  In fact, they've lost MOST of them!

You can still like Harbaugh AND be able to do simple math.

Harbaugh is harder to plan against. As far as a well oiled machine and Dinardos record...a machine requiring no oil could have beaten his team's so there's that.

With the well oiled machine comments. We all know the offensive coaching staff was dysfunctional. It's been talked to death on this site. Hopefully Harbaugh's self evaluation works. This fall we have the toughest schedule I have ever seen.

So I guess I can't have an opinion huh. How about you coach? What are your credentials that justify your opinion? DiNardo is right about UM not being a well oiled machine but in my opinion (once again not a coach) but Harbaugh is a far better coach than him, wouldn't you agree coach?

When you put DiNardo's record up against Harbaugh's record, you're doing just that, suggesting DiNardo has no authority to criticize or have an opinion because he doesn't have Harbaugh's record.  Got it now?

Bluey -- upvoted.  I disagree with the article but appreciate you posting it.  180 replies and counting.  On an otherwise sleepy Sunday, you gave us something to talk about.

They aren't potshots...they are accurate. He has been all over map the past year. Let's see what happens going forward. Had this been Home losing to SC like that in bowl game, then nobody would question DiNardos statement.

I believe the title should read "... WAS all over map".  He has no idea what the game plan is for this year.   The criticism is valid with regard to last year.  As for this year, he has no idea how Patterson will be used or who will be the primary play caller.  It was not a well-oiled machine last year.  It could be something entirely different this year.

Just because he sucked as a coach does not mean the points are not valid.

Plenty of smart fans could point to the issues with the team (especially the offense). Having “too many cooks in the kitchen” is one of them.

kitchen was a big issue.  Seems like that's the way he's been organizing game day play calling for years - now it's an issue?  3 major problems last year, IMO.  Inconsistent QB play, excacerbated by the injuries. OL play.  And the whole experiment with zone and Frey, which further hindered #2.   Did Pep calling passing game and Dreno calling run game hurt?  Maybe but I think way down the list, if it did.

DiNardo was right about what he saw last year...let's not deny it. But that was then....and those questions he now makes are valid But now the cog Drevno/Frey is gone. Before that, it was a mess. and an attempt has been made to correct it. Now let's see what happens going forward. I digress... I still wonder about Pep, and think he might be gone after this year and McElwain becoming OC.

McElwain feels like a one-year rent-a-coach. But that is okay ... if he gets a coordinator job or head coaching offer elsewhere it's probably because he has revitalized Michigan's stagnant passing game.

Of course, but it's a transactive hire.

McElwain keeps coaching, keeps a salary, and Jim can use his Florida connections to make more inroads to talented schools.

At least that's what I assumed were the drivers towards both offering him a position and him accepting it.

His criticism isn’t really invalid, but it’s remarkable how we were one play short on offense in so many of the losses. This year there’s no excuse. We have a top-talent QB in Shea, a third year Brandon Peters and a second year DM. Obviously we need consistent pass blocking on the outside, but I am assuming (and hoping) our offense is so much improved this season, especially with all pass catchers and RBs returning, that the naysayers will start to “believe” in Harbaugh again when we win the big games this season.
