Georgia hires Jim Chaney as new OC

Submitted by Squeezebox on

This one is getting a lot of mixed reviews and seems like an OK, but nothing special type of hire.
Chaney has a long resumé, from coaching Drew Brees at Purdue to stops at Tennessee, Arkansas and last year at Pitt, under Narduzzi.  I'll put all the links below and let you judge.

UM's main interest in this affair lies with Issac Nauta's reaction to this hire.

Three main points that will influence his decision:
1)  Jacob Eason in in Athens this weekend and was scheduled to meet with Chaney last night. This will go long way in determining the Nauta sweepstakes.
2)  Chaney is also well-regarded for his ability to work with tight ends. In 2000, former Purdue tight end Tim Stratton won the inaugural John Mackey Award after catching 58 passes for 605 yards and two touchdowns.
3)  No decision has been reached yet on the status of current GA tight ends coach, John Lilly.  Not sure that this is important, as the Dawgs didn't feature a TE much last year.

Cheney did use TEs last year at Pitt. His top two TEs had 24 rec/350 yds & 11 rec/213 yds.

We UM have a rule that if you are a long time leader for a recruit and he doesn't commit he is going somewhere else. This is the exact situation with Nauta and Georgia. Why shouldn't we like our chances because he hasn't committed to Georgia yet?

I do remember Stratton making waves for blasting Joe Tiller and the Purdue staff as the primary reason he was not drafted in 2002. There was some buzz initially that he'd go in the middle rounds, as I recall, but when he found himself still waiting for a team even after the traditional Mr. Irrelevant had been taken, there were numerous articles where he accused Tiller of saying things such as "Stratton is high maintenance" or "Stratton is not a locker room favorite"....generally unflattering things. No idea how true that is, but that story was the first thing to come to mind.

At this point it feels like Nauta is just looking for reasons to stick with Georgia and barring an OC hire that hates TEs or runs a running spread offense he will end up there.  This may not have been an exciting hire but it seems like it will be enough to keep Nauta in Georgia.

I don't see the logic here either. It's like these guys think they are going to have to practice outside in December through February. It's like 20 hours in November and then walking to and from class or to their cars. They are just soft.

Look, at this point if Nauta doesn't want to come to Michigan. It's because he doesn't want to come to Michigan. He has every reason in the world to come. So if he doesn't...it's just a matter of Ann Arbor wasn't where he wanted to be. Coaching, scheme, resume...all favor Michigan. He either wants to come here or he doesn't. It's not a matter of pros outweighing the cons on this one.
