Gedeon, named starter

Vikings, depth chart just came out, and Ben Gedeon is the starter at WLB. Our boy is a starting LB in a, Mike Zimmer defense. :) Congrats to him.

I got "made fun of" (wasn't bad at all) at my fantasy draft for not drafting more Michigan guys. I was like 'well there aren't really any'. I can't wait for another couple years when that won't be the case.

Congrats, Ben and all current and future wolverines in the NFL!

Freely admidt I'm VERY biased as I coached his brother years ago and I'm friends with his HS defensive coach BUT.....

Freshman: Burn redshirt for no apparent reason.  Waste a full year of development.

Sophomore: Play spin the big whell of playing time.  Get pulled for reasons unknown and then get PT for reasons unknown.  Consider transferring until Harbaugh is hired.

Junior: Sit behind the greatness that was Joe Bolden.  Play some, get coached for the first time and start to make an impact.

Senior: Well, well well.  Starts and plays extemely well in his one and only year of signficant time on the field

When he committed to Michigan I predicted he'd be our "Chris Spielman."  Tough hitter that was too small, too slow but just made plays.   Well based on this non-surprising news (to me anyways) he could've been.  No....he SHOULD'VE been.

Rant over.

I didn't really know much about him until his junior year but I remember he seemed to make every tackle on special teams. I kept saying where is this coming from and why isn't he seeing more playing time. He was always around the ball and he didn't seem to get any credit for it. In hindsight, his first two years were so wasted and it is such a shame. Here is hoping that he has an awesome NFL career to make up for it.

He always seemed like a talented kid just a little bit out of place.  Saw flashes, even early on, that showed a ton of promise, but never seemed to quite be in a system that let him flourish.  Good luck to him!

He has the right instincts for the position. This is no disrespect but I am starting Devin Bush ahead of him in Don Brown's defense. Although the picture of him alone could cause opposing running backs to take a Saturday off.

could someone elaborate on the significance of a mike zimmer defense, as OP specifically mentions?  i'm not as up to date on NFL rosters and coaching as i am with the college world.

A great article. Could not have described it any better. He got even better at disguising last season. Pre-snap everyone on D are lined up right on the ball - the two outside corners and 1 saftey. You never know who is rushing, and is dropping into coverage. You never know who is blitzing on top of that. All of his players are very athletic, versitale and capable of either, including most of the lineman. He is very deliberate in the players he chooses. That double A gap blitz is his signature though. It can be a combination of positions coming through that gap, and all of his other blitzes. Not just LB's. Let me put it this way. Don Radagast Brown, is the Mike Saruman Zimmer, of College Football.
