Gary v. Bosa

Submitted by Sharuck on

OSU fan here.  Given that it is slow, I thought that I would tip you off that OSU fans expect there to be a lot of arguments the next two years regarding whether Rashan Gary or Nick Bosa is the better player.

Arguments for Gary:  you already know them.  I do not dispute any of them, and expect him to be elite.

Arguments for Bosa:  OSU press has reported that OSU coaches think that  (1) Nick has been better than his brother Joey at the same age (in HS and as college freshman).  I think each team would be thrilled if either player has the career that Joey did (http://www.ohiostatebuckeyes.com/sports/m-footbl/mtt/joey_bosa_854118.html) (2) Nick was the best player on the team last year (Nick played limited snaps, particularly early, since he was recovering from injury).

Freshman stats:  I think they are meaningless, since both players were behind excellent upper classman.   If you are neverthelss curious, Nick's were a little better -- 5 sacks/7 TFL for Nick v. 1/5 for Gary.

Obviously, too early to call, and each team likes there guy.

While I have to downvote you for being an OSU fan, its always nice to hear an unbiased opinion from the other side.

I'm guessing both guys will have stellar careers and go on to be first round draft picks in two years. But while I'm trying my hardest not to be biased here, I have to go with Gary because he was the #1 player in America coming out of HS for a reason. A lot of opposing fans will say that Bosa had better numbers than Gary last year. Which is true. But Gary was also playing on a DL loaded with upperclassmen NFL draft picks. He was not going to supplant a highly productive senior like Taco Charlton or Chris Wormley, both of whom went in the first and third round respectively. Bosa had a much clearer path to seeing the field on a more consistent basis.

Now there is literally no one else standing in Gary's way. He (along with Hurst) are "the guys" next Fall. I would not be shocked to see Bosa have a double-digit sack year, but we are also going to see why Gary was the #1 prospect coming out of HS next season.

You are 100% right about Gary playing behind great players, and I expect him to have a monster year this year.

But OSU's DEs are not bad.  Bosa is playing behind two upperclassman (Hubbard and Lewis) that are projected at least by some to be first round picks next year.  So Bosa had the same problem last year, and will again this year.  (I think first round is a little high for both Hubbard and Lewis, and think second round is more likely, but you get the point.)

Yeah. Sorry. I was just pulling the name of an old tOSU QB to compare with a current UM QB. My memory turned came up with Art.  It wasn't intended to be snark. Poor execution.

This should be looked at from the QB perspective. If you were a QB which one would you rather face?  I think the easy answer is neither!

Gary is the smarter player who picked the better educational institution (by far) with tons more alumni who are movers and shakers in the world. Bosa, if he plays school, will get a sheet of paper with ink on it.

Rashan Gary's ceiling is the best DL in Michigan history, he has all the ability, just has to put it all together. Don't know too much about the bosa brother but from what I do know, is that he's a real student of the game, not fast but has good football speed, and extremely gritty

Bosa may be better at racking up stats, but Gary will be the better player. Gary will dominate all aspects of the position, but will have to compete with many other players for the sack. Watching him last year it looked like he couldve had about 10 sacks in limited play, but it seemed like someone would just barely beat him to the QB every time. Plays where the QB wouldve been sacked either way but another wolverine was just a step ahead of him. This year could be simular, but with more PT. Hes gonna have to compete with Hurst, Winovich, and whichever LB they blitz.

I could make a argument that Chris Evans is better than Gary and Bosa. Or I could say that Evans was the best freshman on both teams. In 3 years everyone will know who's the best player. And I think it will be Chris Evans.
