On why he is interested in Michigan:

"It's because it's Michigan. I really don't even know anything about the academics (laughing). I really don't. I'm not going to lie to you. It's Michigan football. That's big time, Big House football."

The Greensboro News and Record is my hometown paper. All this comes in the wake of a huge athlete eligibility scandal at Northern Guilford High School. Northern's football, baseball, and basketball coaches were all AAU coaches hired by the high school to create instant winners at a brand new school. All three teams were found to be comprised of mostly ineligible players and the basketball team had to forfeit a state championship. This lead to a new county wide policy that all coaching positions must be filled by school employees, (teachers, administrators, etc.) unless one could not be found. King, his family, and coaches knowingly violated all the rules. Hopefully he will get a second chance to play somewhere else.

I'm as rule-abiding as anyone you're going to find . . .

. . . but I can't think of a kid who wouldn't do this. It's up to the parents, coaches, and administrators to make sure this kind of stuff doesn't happen. A 16- or 17-year-old kid shouldn't bear the responsibility. Without knowing the entire case, I think the kid should be allowed to play for a different school district. He shouldn't be banned from playing in all of North Carolina.

Correct. However, if all of the controversy at Northern hadn't happened, I doubt that the NCHSAA would be ruling so harshly towards King. I do know the AD at Page, and he has had nothing but good things to say about King and character would certainly not be an issue in his recruitment. He just broke the wrong minor rule at the wrong time.

I believe in second chances. Get him in here and fast. All he needs to do is pass the NCAA requirments and I say "it's a go!"

Why do I say that? I have no idea. I never heard of the kid.

The least of Gabe King's problems are where he tried to play football in high school. He's got a lot of baggage...enough that NC State and UNC aren't recruiting him at all.

I hope the kid gets it turned around, but I don't think this is one you ought to worry about.
