Sanjay Gupta
December 11th, 2015 at 2:11 AM ^
Sanjay Gupta, he's one of the top Neurosurgeons in the country while also being a medical journalist for CNN, and he went to UM for undergrad and med school.
He gave the commencement speech for the UM graduating class of 2012.

I think it's almost beyond politics that Carson is a confirmed "nutcase." He still stands by his assertion that the Eqyptian pyramids were built by Joseph to store grain. He's a crazy person who thinks and says crazy things.

I basically agree with you but Ben Carson's stupidity outside his obvious professional skill is just astounding. Did you see him read that speech on the Middle East? Never mind the mispronunciation, he was like a child reading a term paper.

I'm suffering some cognitive dissonance reading your reply here, because I can't for the life of me figure out what being CNN's chief medical correspondent has to do with being a top neurosurgeon. He is obviously very good and for the most part respected for the former and I'm guessing he's good at the latter due to his education and the fact that he has admitting privileges at Emory, but I just don't see the connection here.
December 11th, 2015 at 12:26 PM ^
Okay... I was mainly basing it off his position at Emory a well respected institution... Sorry I'm not that tuned in with the fraternity of neurosurgeons. Ben Carson is well known for his surgical prowess. How many neurosurgeons are actually famous outside of the scientific field? Carson Gupta and... Omalu (who isn't even a neurosurgeon but a neuropathologist)? Cut me some slack damn.

was a friend of mine when we both attended UofM med school. While he is a fine neurosurgeon and a brilliant man, I don't think calling him "one of the top neurosurgeons in the country" is entirely accurate. He has gained celebrity and fame more as a media celebrity/television medical expert than as a neurosurgeon. More important than his celebrity, he is a good and decent man.
Ben Carson, on the the other hand (mentioned in replies), is generally regarded as one of the top pediatric neurosurgeons in the world. He was a pioneer in the separation of conjoined twins. He was the head of pediatric neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins, arguably one of the top medical centers in the world. I had the good fortune of interviewing one on one with him when applying to Johns Hopkins for medical school. He is brilliant and humble. He also is a good and decent man.
I don't agree with many of the political views of both. But that doesn't negate their brilliance or good character.
We should all be proud of these two as Michigan alums.

not believe in evolution? That's some kind of dissonance right there.

often have strange ideas or opinions. Religious belief, in this case, plays a role.
But we are straying into forbidden territory here.

Definitely seemed off-base for someone that you'd expect to be very well versed in neuropathology.

What class were you? Sanjay and I were in the same class, '93.
December 11th, 2015 at 11:02 AM ^
as Sanjay as well, '93. I took an unusual path by transferring to the UCLA school of medicine after my second year.

Regardless of the tangental banter in this thread.

MSU grad also spotted. He stands behind a cash register and says "Do what I do...just give up!"

Yes, Sanjay Gupta.

You have to admit, that was a great towel toss. Sometimes you just have to tip your hat and move on.
December 11th, 2015 at 11:02 AM ^
No kidding. Not only the remarkable accuracy of throwing the towel that far, but it unfurled almost perfectly. That might have been a 1-in-100 type of throw.

That toss was money. Looked like it was at least 25 feet away and nothing but net.
