Friday Night Shut-ins The Sequel: What are you drinking?

MGoBoozehounds, it's been seven weeks since last we shared beer recommendations, cocktail recipes and bonhomie. Inspired by DTs and today's discussion of hot buttered apple cider with rum, I ask you again: what are you drinking, and is it nice?

Currently, I'm on a Molson Golden in a 12oz bottle, augmented by a wee dram of Caol Ila 12-year.

Its funny this thread popped up, I was just about to go the liquor store and was asking myself what I should get. I missed Arthur's day yesterday so I was thinking of Guinness or maybe White Russians. Of course, I'm open to other suggestions from my MgoBoard brethren.

Gentleman's Jack with tonic or coke...or on the rocks.

Over 12 years...take your pick: Gold label, blue label...for single malts I like Highland Park.

For vodka you have to go with Ciroc...distilled from grapes and can be taken straight on the rocks (red bull or tonic otherwise.) I have yet to find another vodka that can lay claim to that. Kettle falls short and Goose is a joke.

Alright, just got back from the store with a 12-pack of Guinness Draught.

Also picked up a 6-pack of the new Bud Light Wheat. My initial take is that it's just a meh, 2* beer.
- It has a orange/amber color to it with a slight haze. Not much for a head.
- Definitely on the light side, it goes down smooth (its bud light, so no surprise there) but lacks in body and flavor. Has a citrus flavor to it, but nothing thats overpowering.
- Still has that light beer mouth feel to it.
- Might appeal to the Bud Light Lime/non-beer drinker sort of crowd but I'll be passing on it next time around.

e-pinion, stick with Blue Moon or Leinenkugel Sunset Wheat.

Arthur Guinness brewed porter (the predecessor to stout). Porter tended to be a pretty strong beer, by modern standards. What really drove down the strength of porter and other beers in England and Ireland was taxation. Beer was taxed based on the original gravity, which is a measure of the amount of sugar in the wort (i.e., the beer before it's brewed). It's also the biggest factor in the strength of the finished beer.

I wouldn't be entirely surprised if there were a grain of truth to the story. Gin was introduced shortly before Arthur Guinness began brewing at about this time, and beer (even a strong beer) was weaker than gin. However, a little googling turns up one essay claiming Guinness as a "Christan beer" in a couple dozen places, without any evidence to support the claim. So it doesn't sound like there's a lot to it.

Oh, and I had one of Dogfish Head's 60 Minute IPAs.

can't claim to have researched the topic myself, but there is an entire book on this topic.

It is called "The Search for God and Guinness"

Actually, I read the description of the book and maybe it was about the faith of the Guinness family, which may have had nothing to do with his beer brewing.

Either way, I will be enjoying my guinness tonight.

No, I have never had Flat Tire, but Fat Tire is considered to be one of the most overrated beers in many beer circles.

I personally like it, but I know quite a few people that consider it very meh. The same could be said of my Shiner Bock.

Glad to see WildcatBlue back around. I picked me up a 6 pack I had never tried before. Paulaner Salvator, a double/doppel bock. I'm waiting a bit closer to kick off (Mizzou @ Nevada thread to be open soon) before I start getting too involved.

Trying to finish this post about Bud Middaugh before I get too buzzed, too. His story pisses me off greatly when drunk. Michigan's first ever NCAA sanctions.... rabble rabble.

Just goes down too easy the night before a 20 mile run. Bourbon has a little more "bite" eliminating one of the sources of pain tomorrow.... Of course, Scotch is the order of the day after the game. BTW, I would never Neg someone for drinking the beverage of their choice, even if thought it was a poor choice.

I really think so. It's $6.99/6-pack @ Busch's, IIRC. Not very heavy, a subtle citrus tone, quite drinkable. It's local -- brewed and bottled in Webberville. And, well, ya gotta love the name.

Got a half-barrel of it from Morgan & York (on Packard, used to be Big Ten Party Store) last winter. The Spouse and I really enjoyed it, draining the barrel in about 3 weeks.
