Freshmen you think will see the field in 2016?

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on

Rashan Gary, LaVert Hill, David Long, Devin Bush Jr., Eddie McDoom, Nate Johnson.

Redshirt everyone else, do not waste them for special teams.

Gotta get some CBs going given our entire starting secondary may not be back in 2017 (thanks Hoke).

I'm really interested to see takes on this.

Under Harbaugh, we all know the best players will play.l, regardless of class year. That said, Walker has at least Smith, Isaac, Johnson and likely Higdon ahead of him, with both Isaac and Higdon returning in 2017. Play him if he's clearly better than the others but I hope we don't just play him for the sake of playing him, given the depth we already have.

gets hurt. Even if he jumps everyone except O'Korn and Speight, You don't burn a redshirt so that a QB can play as a third stringer. By the time we'd be putting our third QB in, the game would no longer be in doubt, and we could let our fourth or fifth stringer hand the ball off a few times.

This would not surprise me. He is the most gifted QB on the roster. You get him some experience and put another eligibility year between him and Dylan. It shoul be interesting to watch.

Khaleke Hudson. Need to get some players experience at safety, given that Kinnel is the only player with any experience coming back next year. Hudson seems like the most likely candidate.

Gary will see the field, and probably even start by some point, barring injury.

I would say the corners, like Long and Hill, will see some significant snaps as well. they've got to get ready to take over after a mass exodus this year.

Hudson will play, if he truly is Peppers' heir apparent. The wideouts will play too, because after Chesson and Darboh leave, there's a lot of of unprovens.

Bush will play, not just because he's good enough, but because we need him now. Thankfully he was one of the early enrollees so he's got some practice time under his belt.

Finally, I think Walker will play some scattered snaps, but he could probably take a redshirt because there's quite a bit of depth in front of him right now. But hey, if he gives us a chance to win, let him play.

Hopefully everyone else redshirts.

Absolutely right. Bredeson may very well get playing time but it will be on the line, if at all.

The suggestion that H would waste a redshirt putting Long exclusively on ST is equally silly. As several have noted, we lose all 3 starters at CB. It won't be a surprise if H decides Long and L Hill need some game experience. It would be shocking if they wasted eligibility on ST without getting game experience on defense.

For Bredeson and Long, if H decided he was desparate for their participation on ST (which is a ludicrous hypothetical) he would be sure to get them game experience at their future positions.

I would take out Johnson and add:

-Bredeson or Onwenu: to start developing some OL depth

-Asiasi: I can see him getting on the field in 2-3 TE Sets

-Crawford: especially since there will be some holes to fill after Chesson/Darboh leave

I'm curious if Harbaugh will try to preserve redshirts or let more freshman get game experience in some of the blowout wins.

I don't think he has the luxury of trying preserve redshirts because of the roster situation in 2017. And as we saw last year with Higdon's limited touches, if you earn the playing time you're gonna get it. He's said something alone these lines before about the only positions he 'likes' to redshirt are OL and QB, because they take more time to develop.

For instance, there was no reason to burn Tyree Kinnel's redshirt. Very little was gained in my opinion. We sacrificed a year of his eligibility for snaps on special teams.

Also, there are concerns about the the inexperience next year but Harbaugh can manage that by giving the 2015 recruits (remember them?) more snaps.

There's no reason to burn through the redshirt of the 2016 class unless they are so exceptional that they simply cannot be denied snaps as a starter or back-up.

Nate Johnson, Kekoa Crawford, Asiasi, Gary, Kemp, Bush, Mbem-Bosse, Hill, Long, Khaleke, Metellus should all get some PT this year. Khaleke and Melellus simply because they will need to be ready in 2017.

I'm really interested to see how Drake Harris and Mo Ways do backing up the starting WR's, because I think that will determine how the freshman receivers will be utilized. If Ways and Harris start looking like they can step into the starting roles next year I think we will see maybe 3 or 4 of the 5 freshmen move to DB, especially if we land two top 50 receivers in this recruiting class like many expect us to.

I think Metellus gets some time at safety.  With only Kinnel back next year, that position needs help.  Hudson will certainly play, but as a safety or Peppers-esque HSP?  I also think that one of the freshmen WR's will move to safety, but would probably RS as he wouldn't be as ready as Metellus should be this year.

Didn't really think Metellus would be ready to play, but you're right we absolutely need more experience at that position. I'm thinking Keith Washington might also switch to safety b/c of depth concerns. That is unless he breaks out as a must be candidate for CB, but considering the depth in front of him is at least Lewis, Stribling, Clark, and Watson, and Long and Hill coming in, probably not.

Gary obviously

I could see 2 receivers getting playing time. I wonder if anyone could challenge Perry for the starting slot role later in the season...? although he looked like he made a lot of headway towards the end of last season.

Maybe some reps for Crawford, Mitchell or McDoom/Johnson

Hudson at S, special teams

Maybe Bush Jr and either Long or Hill at CB at some point.

I'm not so sure about Walker. Obviously depends on health, Isaac's status with the staff and the growth of Higdon. I wouldn't be shocked either way if he gets some PT or redshirts.

Nobody said Wheatley yet?  I thought he was big-time in spring ball, no? I'm excited about he and Gentry continuing where Funchess left off in that they are all unusally big guys that often look "wrong" when moving around the field the way they do for their size.

If nothing else, given Harbaugh's ability to recruit so far, I don't have a problem with less redshirts. The type of players he's recruiting could instantly upgrade some special team play. My preference would be to not play freshmen OL unless they figure to start next year.
