Freep ranks sports venues in Michigan (continues dumbassery)

Submitted by maizenblue92 on

I was going through the last few days of news on rivals page and came across an article about ranking the sports venues in Michigan. (Article here http://www.freep.com/article/20100610/SPORTS03/100610008/1054/SPORTS06/The-best-arena-around-is-...- if you want explainations.)

The list goes:

8. Crisler Arena- I'll give them that the place isn't that great.

7. Joe Louis Arena- Again not that great.

6. Michigan Stadium- !?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!? What!?!?!?!?!?

5. Comerica Park- Fair enough

4. Spartan Stadium- Ahead of Michigan Stadium. Really?!

3. Breslin Center- It is a good stadium but calling it "a perfect college arena" is an overstatement.

2. Ford Field- It is a great stadium. But #2. I don't know

1. The Palace of Auburn Hills- It is a very good venue

I think the Freep overated some of the Spartan venues and did have some good points. What do you think?

In case there was any doubt that the paper gone over the edge...

* "Sorry folks, but the “Maize Rage” is never going to take off."  Never?  They're not even pretending to be impartial.

* "The first time I ever attended a Michigan-Ohio State game, I couldn’t find my seats when I finally arrived at my row."  I was reminded of a kid in my elementary school class who couldn't find numbered pages in large books.  (I'm not kidding -- it was a semi-rural school district.)

* "The atmosphere in East Lansing on game day is the best I’ve ever experienced in the Big Ten."  This guy has apparently never been to Columbus, Evanston, Madison, or several other Big 10 towns.

...for gameday atmosphere?

Columbus is a great atmosphere (but too hostile for me to enjoy fully). Madison is fun, and definitely a good time. East Lansing is an easy drive, a great tailgate, and less disgusting than Columbus overall.

Evanston does not rate... there are more opposing fans than NU fans tailgating.

I was at Spartan Stadium last November for the WMU game.  Me and my buddy had pretty good seats on the corner of the end zone.    In the 2nd half, after many Spartan fans had already left, a family with 3 kids under 5 (why take 3 kids under 5 to a Big10 football game?) moves down in to the row right behind us.

I know how kids are, and when one of this family's 3 kids boots me hard in the back about 3 times, my move is to ignore it and just hope it doesn't happen again.    The mother notices what her kid does, and apparently doesn't regard the fact that I have chosen to ignore it.

Then she says quite loudly "(Little Johnny), don't do that again or that guy is going to turn around and smack you".    WOW!   Awkward.    I've already chosen to ignore your dumb kid drilling me in the back, and now I have to choose to ignore the fact that you threatened your child on my behalf, thereby suggesting that I'm some kind of engraged child-beater.

Spartan Stadium, everyone...    and just a shithole to boot.

A really neat feature of Spartan Stadium are the gas pumps along the weat side of the stadium. To me, nothing says college football like a row of gas pumps at your stadium.

Dear Carolyn,

I like this guy.  Actually we used to go out, and he told me I was his number one and how pretty and smart I am and stuff.  But, lately he's been saying a lot of bad stuff about me.  And he said a lot of bad stuff about my friend Rich and he got him in trouble even though he didn't do that stuff.  And he just keeps sayin' it after everyone knows he didn't do anything.  And now he's saying my house isn't any good and things like that.  All my friends tell me I should just ignore him, but I can't.  What should I do?

Signed,

Insecure in A2

Dear Insecure,

Your friend is psychotic.  He's tearing you down to build himself up.  Don't look at him again.  In fact, wait him out.  He'll be dead soon enough.

For the life of me, I don't understand this whole "Hey guys, here's a terrible article from a newspaper we hate.  Let's read it!" line of reasoning.  If you hate the Freep, why are you reading it?

Freep decided to follow up this article with a readers poll, which proves just how stupid their earlier list really was

By the way, I love that the Palace is ranked so low. It's such a dumb location for an arena, and I hate driving out there.
