Forum Blacklisting is Here (In Chrome)

Submitted by BlockM on

Yesterday I posted a GreaseMonkey script to hide negative users. After poking around, I found out that Chrome extensions were a much better way to go.

It's not pretty, but if you download the file, click it to install, and add some folks to the block list, they will be conveniently hidden from your view.

Notes: Only enter the portion of the user's name that is displayed, including any "..." if it's abbreviated. Usernames are grabbed straight from the displayed page. Also, clicking "Clear Blocked" will remove all entries.

You have a checkbox to hide all negative posters if you'd like as well.

Like I said, it's incredibly raw. Suggestions welcome.

Edit: It's hosted with all the real Google Chrome Extensions now...

Another edit: Cleaned up the look a little bit, made it more MGoBloggy. Also added an option for indicating where a post has been hidden with a red box. Especially nice so that you don't think someone is cussing out an innocent bystander.

If I drag the file into my Chrome browser, it asks if I would like to continue and then a box pops up and says "Bad Magic Number"

Edit: Never mind. Redownloaded and it worked. Thanks!

He was actually (part of) the motivation for the upgrade from a strict blocking of all negative users. This will allow us to ignore all the incarnations of the trolls while tuning in to the more entertaining inhabitants of Bolivia.

So you can see my post?

If you can I have one quick question:

Say you put me on the block list.  I make a post and someone replies to my post.  Will you see just the reply?  How does it work with the post block being indented.

In that situation what I would see is either just the reply, or a small red box where your post was indicating that a post was hidden. You can toggle that setting by checking or unchecking the "indicate that a post has been removed" checkbox.

That was the main reason I added the indicator functionality. It's the same thing that happened when the mods were hiding users' posts, where you would see responses and think they were for someone else's post.

You can test it out by finding a comment that has been replied to, adding that user to the list, and refreshing the page.

I wish there were indicators for removed posts from banned posters. They can get some pretty scathing responses, and then some hapless post above it appears to get the business for no reason. Maybe just a blank post with an amusing picture indicating that someone who sucks used to be there.

Can it hide the post, but show a button to toggle it back on?  Some reply threads don't quote the idiocy that they're responding to, and are funnier when you can see the original stupidity for yourself.

Either way, nice job

It's on my list of improvements I'd like to make. I'll let everyone know when some new features are available.

I also plan to add the ability to remove individual users from the blacklist. If anyone actually works up a decent size list and wants to remove someone now, they'll have to start all over.
