Former UM LB coach Jay Hopson hired as Southern Miss Head Coach
Jay Hopson, former UM LB coach under Rich Rodriguez in 2008-2009, has been hired to be the Head Coach at Southern Miss.
He left his Head Coach position at Alcorn State. Prior to his arrival, Alcorn State in 2011 was 2-8. Under Hopson they went 4-7, 9-3, 10-3, 9-4. In 2014 and 2015 they won their conference division and SWAC Championship game. They were named the Black College National Champions in 2014. He is the first white head football coach in the SWAC, a conference of historically black colleges and univesitities.
His time at Michigan was brief, during a period of our history about which many have mixed feelings. His success at Alcorn State shows that Rodriguez did have a few good assistant coaches (i.e. Glen Frey, current Indiana OL coach/co-OC, and Scott Shafer, current Durkin hired DC at Maryland).

(of note, Nussmeier was also reportedly considered to take the HC job)

Totally awesome inappropriate story forthcoming!!!
When Hopson was here in AA, he and his family were members at the same country club/pool as I. His wife was super hot. There was a great deal of drinking and staring... :-D

You can tell us, we're all friends here.....any pictures?

I wish, but no. They were really nice people, but very clearly out of place. The wife was very, VERY clearly a "southern belle" and his two daughters (I think it was two?) were ALWAYS dressed up over the top and had little bows in their hair. It was like a ridiculous child fashion show. But I somehow distinctly recall how attractive his wife was... ;-)

Yes. Thou shall not covet another man's wife...
But I do remember that Countdown to Kickoff back in the RR error, where they showed the coaches familes. His wife was a jaw dropper...brunette as I recall.
Hopson also had a very rich deep set of pipes with a Southern drawl. Good coach.

She is (or was) indeed a brunette. She had some highlights in there too. She also wore very tight, form-fitting bikinis. Oh, and high heels to the pool. Every time she came.
I mean, I vaguely recall these things...

A total smokeshow.

Went to the Alabama UM game in Dallas, was struck by how their fanbase, even the college kids, liked to dress up for the game. Perhaps a Southern thing.

Sounds like a quality hire.

I just don't quite know what to make of this sentence, but it seems to fit really well with your avatar.

Was about to make a comment about why would someone hire any defensive coach from the Richrod years as their head coach but wow, that's a pretty impressive record he built at Alcorn St. Hope he does well
February 3rd, 2016 at 9:04 PM ^
Yea, the 2nd NCAA article points out he coached a stellar defense as DC in the years just prior to his hiring by RR.
Just goes to show, a lot of factors have to be in place for a team to be successful--good coaches just one factor.

I guess he's a better head coach than he was an assistant, because the quality of our LB play under Hopson was nothing to write home about. He also wasn't much of a recruiter while he was here, since the two best recruits he brought in, DeQuinta Jones and Pearlie Graves, decommitted on signing day and ended up elsewhere.
But hey, good for him. Maybe he's just a late bloomer. Or maybe it was Rich Rod.

fondly.
Those were not good times, and the double decommit fit in pretty well with all the other nut punches of that era.

LB play was downright atrocious. And then he went to be a DC at Memphis?
Maybe he's a better HC/delegator?

Or maybe it was just Rich Rod.

...been comparable to their quality as a player. I looked up the 2008 LB roster and it wasn't pretty. Basically all freshmen and sophomores. The two best LBs were Kenny Demens, a freshman, and Jonas Mouton, a RS sophomore. I don't think any of the juniors or senior even got any playing time. Not much to work with.

Greg Frey, not Glenn the recently deceased Eagles member.

This news is so old I read about it first on a stone tablet. Come on.

I was thinking a couple of things 1. Is, the name is Victor Hobson and 2. I had know idea he was coaching.....Anyway I guess congradulations are in order for him, about the position and I hear, his wife. Even though evidently he was part of the RR error.
