Football Captains: Speculation

Submitted by Michigan Marshmallow on

I hadn't seen this talked about anywhere, but I was wondering if anyone knew when the team captains for this year would be revealed. (Have they already been announced?)

Who do you think will be a captain?

Lots of good candidates on both sides:

Offense: Lewan, Schofield, Toussaint, Gallon, Dileo
Defense: Washington, Black, Cam Gordon, Thomas Gordon,

If the one offense one defense thing continues I think Lewan is the obvious choice on offense. Defense I think either Washington or Gordon would be picked.

Just another thought, but would Gibbons even be considered? Has a kicker ever been selected as a Michigan team captain? He's been an integral part of the team the past two years, and probably will be again this season.

I thought it was based entirely on player vote? And the only reason why they had three the first year was because there was a tie or it was really close or something like that. One on offense and one on defense is the plan every year. Lewan and Gordon.

Gardner is atypically not a senior. He is in his 4th year of school already with his Bachelor's degree completed and enrolled in graduate school. I'd like to see both Gardner and Lewan as captains on the offensive side, but captains are voted on by the players and how many of us really know the inside team dynamics? From the outside view, Gardner exhibits leadership like a captain.

If B1G media days are any indication it will be Lewan, T. Gordan, and Gardner.  But, I could also see Gallon and Q-Wash.

Lewan and T. Gordon.

Maybe there is a possibilty of Lewan, T. Gordon, Washington and Gardner. They were all pictured on the 2013 team poster. Maybe a teaser.

Rather have two though. Offensive and defensive.

Rare to see a kicker captain but honestly after all the crap he took as a freshman he earned it. Plus only 2 more kicks to break the Michigan record for consecutive fg made

and then have the players endorse their choice as if it were a democracy, which, of course, it wasn't. The coaches wanted the players and coaches on the same page, so by handpicking the captains, they got the message they wanted passed along no matter what.

This has changed. But not that much. And it's based on contribution and attitude.

Did anyone think that Lewan in coming back shouldn't be the man?  He is the Man. Just like Devin, because your quarterback should almost always be a team leader and captain.

And the other one is T. Gordon, but only because he is on the defensive side, and not because he doesn't deserve it. So, yes, there will be tri-captains.

And next year, they will be Gardner, if he stays, and Ryan and possibly Countess.

He took shit from all sides in 2010, stuck with the transition and has made some huge plays. Seems like people would look up to him.

He also seems like a big enough guy to occasionally lay some lumber and earn a little respect. Of course my football experience began and ended in sixth grade pop warner so I'm not sure I have the best handle on locker-room dynamics.

MGoBlue says Zoltan was the only special teams captain in the history of the team.

Just want to point out, while Gardner is technically not a senior, he's only been at UM a semester less than Lewan (Devin enrolled Jan 2010) and already graduated with his degree.  Given he's also the quarterback, wouldn't be that much of a stretch to see him alongside Lewan and Gordon as a captain.

Along with just about everyone else, I think Lewan and Gordon are near certainties. There aren't really any other options on defense, although there are a few on offense (Gardner, Gallon, Schofield).

Lewan is a lock, and my bet is on Gordon for the defensive captain. I'm guessing Hoke only wants two captains, but if he goes with a third, my guess would be Gardner. I don't know exactly how much of a vocal leader he's become over the last few months, but if he's not a captain this year, he's a solid bet to be one for the 2014 season.

Assuming he sticks around, of course.

I thought about Q-Wash, given his increased level of production and his backstory, but he seems more of a "lead by example" kind of guy than a vocal leader. I don't have a ton of basis for that, and I'm sure he'd make a great captain, but that's just a gut feeling.

There was an article that came out last season about Quinton Washington and how he had to overcome a very prominent stuttering problem in school. He still has some stuttering issues. I doubt that he would be a vocal leader, but there's something to be said for leading by example. Regardless, if you only have two or three captains, you probably want those guys to be able to talk in front of their teammates regularly. It would be a great story if he became captain, but I don't really see that happening.
