First Time Ever Two B1G QBs Will Start in Super Bowl
According to the BursleyHall82 Sports Bureau (and please correct me if I'm wrong), this will be the first time in history that two Big Ten quarterbacks will meet as starters in the Super Bowl.
Only four B1G quarterbacks have ever won a Super Bowl: Bob Griese, Tom Brady, Drew Brees and Russell Wilson. And now we have a little B1G-on-B1G action.
Couple that with Ohio's National Championship and the Harbaugh Hiring, and this has been a pretty damn good couple of weeks for B1G football.

I was going to ask the same thing. What are the rules for transfers like this? Is it where he played the most, where he graduated, or just both? This is very important to figure out.

NC State and Wisconsin can both claim him. Just like Michigan and Wisconsin can both claim Crazy Legs Hirsch, Michigan and North Carolina can both claim Makhtar N'Diaye, and Michigan State and the Ingham County Jail can both claim Chris L. Rucker.

logged in for the +1 on Rucker...as Plaxico served time post-Super Bowl I guess the Oneida Correctional Facility doesn't get the same credit as the Ingham County Jail?

So this is closer to 'Nam than to bowling.

I think he is most well know for his grad year at Wisconsin , even though he was a very good starter for NC State

The dude won a Big Ten Championship. I'd say that counts.

It's where you finish, not where you start ... if Arkansas gets to forever claim Ryan Mallett, then Wisconsin gets to claim Russell Wilson.s
January 18th, 2015 at 11:10 PM ^
I can see your point with Mallett since he was here one year, but I disagree with Wilson.
Do we not claim Ryan Mundy? He got his degree here. Same with Mike Cox.

Before Wilson, their last decent qb nearly got choked to death by an OSU player.

Nope, the number is five. You're forgetting the Chiefs' Len Dawson, who played at Purdue.
Which makes three Boilermaker SB winners: Griese, Brees, and Dawson.
January 19th, 2015 at 12:20 AM ^
You'd think Purdue would use this pitch to get a QB now.
January 19th, 2015 at 9:24 AM ^
Forgot Dawson. I stand corrected.
January 18th, 2015 at 11:11 PM ^
and it would have been a better week for Michigan football had Oregon stomped Ohio. Conference pride is for Purdue or Illinois who'll never win anything.
January 18th, 2015 at 11:15 PM ^
What about all of the OSU QBs who have led NFL teams to the Super Bowl?
Checks NFl records...never mind.

Who cares? It's all about Touchdown Tom. Let's get #4. Go Patriots. Go Blue.

Anyway, it brings up an interesting list of how many SB winning QBs came from any one school. Stanford has two that I can think of quickly (Plunkett, Elway), ND has two (Montana, Theisman), BYU 2 (Young, McMahon), Bama 3 (Stabler, Starr, Namath - matching Purdue).
Tiny Miami (NTM), Delaware, Northern Iowa, and Grambling have more Super Bowl winning QBs than Ohio. And few QB felons. How come THAT's not in a brochure?!
EDIT: Not only did I get Steve McNair's school wrong, I credited him for a SB he didn't win. Mmm...bourbon.

Bama has quite a few based on players. I think Miami (YTM) might have claim to many.
Based on QBs, ND has 5. Standford has 4.
This is all of the top off my head. I should be fact-checked.
January 19th, 2015 at 12:08 AM ^
Montana won 4 along with Theisman's that gives ND 5. Bradshaw won 4. Brady is looking to tie for wins. He stands alone with 6 trips to the big game though.

Looking at these listed as they are, it's a lot easier to appreciate that there are some clusters where some HOF names played each other quite a bit, primarily through the early-to-mid 1970s and late 1980s-early 1990s if I am not mistaken, but even aside from those stretches, it's a fairly storied listing of pro QBs for the most part.
January 19th, 2015 at 8:40 PM ^
HoF QBs have been involved in a lot of SBs.
When I was making this list I was surprised by how many names appeared more than once.
I was even more surprised that the 'caliber' of college ran across a huge range.

I'd like to see the Big Ten run something congratulating both of them on making it to the biggest stage. They could run it on Sports Center until the SB. It would certainly be a boost to recruiting and a step to counter SEC bias.
