Fire John Beilein

Submitted by ThatGuyCeci on
The time has come. Beilein had a nice run, but the team has lacked intensity and grit for far too long now. Not to mention a severe lack of athleticism. I think Beilein needs to ride off into the sunset and retire. It's time for a new direction. When you hire new assistants for specific purposes and you actually regress in those areas, the writing is on the wall. Thanks for your services Beilein. But your team is no longer watchable.

There are 2 guys who absolutely should be on this team TODAY. In state guys who for whatever reason were overlooked so we could sign a D3 guy.

E.C. Matthews -Rhode Island 15ppg

Edmund Sumner -Xavier 15ppg

Hard to win when you miss the blatant talent right before your eyes. These guys werent super highly rated but I'd never question taking an in state guy who can ball.

I hate to say it but I kind of agree. I was super excited to see what Wilson and Wagner could do together but it just hasn't worked out so far. Definitely a disappointment and i think we all expect better at this point.

Agreed. It's totally fair to say someone has been a great coach at one point and also say that now the program would be better without them. I think Lloyd got to that point too, although they're not totally analogous. But yes, I think a sharp, young coach would be much better for the future of the program.

It's just hard to believe it's gotten this bad.  What happened?  There was so much reason for optimism just a few years ago.

I think it's mostly been the obvious problem: recruiting. People might feel very differently right now if Michigan had just landed Jalen Brunson or Jaylen Brown. Imagine if they'd landed both. Imagine if they'd landed Devin Booker and/or Luke Kennard. The list could go on. Recruiting better wouldn't have fixed all of the problems, but it would likely have made an enormous difference.

And that's just it: He never DOES get those guys. That's the point. You can't say, "What if he did recruit well, there would be no problem" because he doesn't because that's who he is. He's always coming up short. In recruiting, there is no prize for being a recruit's 2nd choice. The good coaches and top program don't fail consistently like that. They don't get played by Tyus Battle. And if they do, they got 3 other guys waiting to take his place. Belein was left with his dick in his hand and a dead class that set him back 2 years. His system isn't good enough to overcome that. Particularly when he recruits soft guys that aren't willing to get dirty and fight for rebounds and play hard nose defense. Throw in his auto bench stuff and a few other peccadillos and it's a recipe for mediocrity. He doesn't inspire the best recruits to come and doesn't inspire the ones who do come. Time to move on.

He has had SOME success in recruiting.  McGary immediately jumps to mind, along wiht Wagner.  Does that mean that he has lost his touch in identifying hidden talent?  Wilson looks like a budding star, but he was allowed to languish for a long time before getting a look.  MAAR can be a game changer, but still needs to finish better at the rim and stop over dribbling.

This team completely lacks any toughness. I used to think Walton had some toughness but each year that goes by it seems to be less and less. Our bigs have some skill but lack toughness which is the primary reason we consistently get out rebounded. I don't know what the heck has happened to Zak Irvin. I've never been a big fan of his game but I'm shocked with his poor overall play as a senior who has logged so many minutes. At the end of the day the coaches are responsible for the product on the floor and at this point it's been alarmingly bad. I've always supported Beilien but he will find himself on the hot seat if things don't turn around quickly.

Soft. Not competitive guys. This is who Beilein recruited. He avoids five stars like the plague (Bamba, Brown and Jackson have all said they contacted Michigan, not the other way around) for THIS. The man must have early demetia or something. He's totally lost it.

Let's see how the season shakes out first. I can take a guess that it will not end well, but teams go on streaks.

It is difficult to have a cordial and magnanimous parting of the ways between the coach of a major sports team and the university that's home to that team.

If anyone can do this, however, it would be the University of Michigan and Coach John Beilein.

Totally agree. It should be a smooth parting. They should be welcome family members of the Michigan family, but they shouldn't continue to take that position of coaching so that their legacy isn't tarnished.

I love John Beilein, which is why I hate to say this time has come. I love Red even more and I hate to say this time has come for him too. But it's time for them to ride off into the sunset and for Michigan basketball and hockey to move in a different and positive direction.

The narrative has been that Beilein can't (or won't) recruit better because he will not participate the cheating that is rampant in college basketball.

Just how true is that narrative?  Is the top half of the Big Ten all cheating?  Is Beilein all alone on an island of integrity?  Is it really that bad?

There is enough talent in the state of Michigan to win championships (it's been done), but Beilein does not go after that talent.

Is it really that bad or is he just being rigid / stubborn?

Nobody wants to go back to the Fab 5 shenanigans, but I'm willing to live with the same recruiting approach / tactics that Indiana, Maryland, Purdue, MSU, Iowa, etc. use.

They can't all be dirty.  And if they indeed are all dirty, then the rules are capricious and arbitrary and have been de-facto nullified by the universities that make up the NCAA.  They are not really the rules any more.

There was one guy getting paid but nobody was pure.  Nor were the Frieder teams of the '80s.  Jalen has admitted it.  Bo used to complain about it.

Look, I'm not naive.  I know that 80's / 90's Michigan basketball played loose with the rules.  I don't expect to go back to that free for all.

But is there some middle ground between the Fab 5 and John Beilein's choir boys?

Does anyone think Wisconsin cheats? Or Butler? And did anyone think JB was cheating when he pulled in the 2012 class? Sure we will never be Kentucky, Duke or Kansas, but there is no reason why we can't consistently recruit like a top 15-20 program.

He remains one of the best offensive minds in basketball. Numbers back that up. The defense needs fixed, obviously. But Donlon knows how to coach defense, and Beilein has given him room to do it. This team may just need time or some turnover in personnel to click with what Donlon is teaching. Charles Marthews, Livers, Poole, and Brooks represent an influx of athleticism (to varying degrees, admittedly) and skill next year. Wagner and Wilson should continue to improve. And it should be natural for the team to be theirs once this year's seniors are gone. Beilein gives us near certainty of Michigan being clean. I'm not arguing that this alone justifies keeping him, but it should be a factor.

Donlon is not involved in practice since the week leading up to Iowa.  Just an FYI.  JB has reverted to what he has always done, 100% offense all practice every practice.

The only exception is the scout team walk through the day before the game.

He is incompetent.  It's hard to admit, but when you ignore one side of the game completely, that's what you are.  See RR.
