A day late and a dollar short. We need to channel the referee hatred and use it towards the formerly French bastards of Algeria.

So they're accepting that it was a bad call, and that they should have allowed the goal...so they're changing the result...riiiiiight?  No?  DAMN IT!!! RAGEEEEE!!!

If I went to State my couch would be burning RIGHT NOWWWW!!!

*Disclaimer: Emotions lightly exaggerated for comedic effect.  But not really...ok, maybe.

Fortunately there is still a path to the next round.  This whole debacle will be easier to read about and digest after the US wins the next game and moves on.

I first read this headline as "FIFA caning Ref."  Come to think of it, a Singapore-style punishment wouldn't have been a bad idea.

I had to look at the play about 10 times to see it, but the ref was looking right at Dempsey, and Dempsey shoved his marker in the back with both hands.  The guy almost fell over (almost into Edu), and Dempsey had a free path to goal.  The ref saw Dempsey do that and immediately put the whistle in his mouth.  All the fouling of Bradley and everyone else occurred after that.  Yes, Slovenia was fouling a whole bunch of U.S. players, but the offense always gets called on that stuff before the defense, and I think Dempsey's foul was legitimate.

I didn't see it until it showed a close up replay. You can't see the push from Dempsey in the first full action replay.

I don't know soccer rules or  watch it, so I'm not sure if thats a foul or not, but there was a push by Dempsey. It didn't look like it affected the play. I don't think you can argue that the push happend.

See that's what is totally maddening, this guy doesn't have to explain what he saw, what he thought or anything. He's not accountable for the process of his decision.

Football refs have to declare to the entire crowd what the flag is for before he can even re-spot the ball. In college and the pros, they have to specify which player committed the foul.

Although try getting a high school ref to tell you on the sideline who your holding call was on...you're lucky if they caught his jersey number the first time let alone remember it long enoguh to tell you.

"I agree with you, and I actually feel bad for the guy."

I've given up feeling bad for fu**-ups. If you can't do the job, go home and have an iced tea and leave it to somebody responsible.

I feel bad for them when they are generally good and screw up one high-profile call, which they admit to in the aftermath. I do not feel bad for them when they suck at their job in general or when they refuse to consider the possibility that they were wrong.

I do not feel sorry for this guy at all.

The ref didn't know that Edu was going to score when he blew the whistle.  If Edu hadn't scored, Dempsey was waiting right on the back post to put the ball in, so it very well could have affected the play as far as the ref knew.  If Dempsey puts that ball in instead of Edu, you can bet that both soccer fans in Slovenia would go apeshit.

But the Dempsey "foul" wasn't really a foul.  USA players were getting manhandled the entire game.  Jozy Altidore got steamrollered on a breakaway, and the dude only got a yellow card.  But what Dempsey did is worthy of a call?  Sorry.  It was a bad call.  Every analyst agrees, even foreign ones.

This just shows what happens to people that either try to screw the US over, or it shows what FIFA will do if US continues to not win big important games.

I disagree, but fair point... nonetheless, if you have to strain that much to find a foul, rest assured, it's a BS call.  Dempsey's "push" is never, ever called in high level soccer - particularly when the refs are letting much, much more physical play go.  Ever.  Ever ever.

Re: my point "if you have to strain" - to be clearer... the ref's job isn't to solely fixate on one player in the box... to call a questionable push, while wearing blinders to blatant drag downs... bleh.  Whatever.   Moving on.  But if this ref is lifted, I feel no sympathy and still a lot of annoyance

Here's the thing - if the USA is second in their group and advance (where they were predicted to) they will play the winner of group D (Germany's group).  So coming in second in our group was only a little better than winning the play in game for the NCAA tournament.  However, now that Germany lost to Serbia, it's possible that they come in second in their group, and Ghana wins the group.  Therefore, if we come in second in our group instead of first, we play a lesser team.  Again, this is all speculation, but somehow these things end up not being so bad.  If Germany still wins their group, then, fuck Mali.

FIFA gets rid of referees who make an astoundingly bad call?

Man, I hope the NCAA is watching the US in the World Cup. Hopefully Hockey East and the CCHA, too.

why dont we change the name of the site?    M Go Blog sounds like it should be about Michigan sports.

There is a fascinating goatherding event in Nepal.  I assume we will cover that, as well.

I guess this is fitting since soccer is all about sending people off. Does that mean his ref crew will play "man down" for the rest of his games?
