Field Hockey upsets #9 Northwestern!

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on

If you've seen these threads, you've been seeing a lot of upsets by Field Hockey.

#14 Michigan Field Hockey (10-5, 5-1 B1G) in arguably their biggest game of the season, has upset ANOTHER top-10 team. The 3rd top-10 B1G team they've beaten this season.

After going down 1-0, Michigan battled back with a penalty corner by star 5th year senior Leslie Smith to make it 1-1 heading into halftime. In the second half with 13 minutes remaining, Lauren Thomas took a penalty corner which was redirected top shelf by Emy Guttman for the game-winning goal in the driving rain.

#9 Northwestern was previously unbeaten in the B1G. Michigan is now in 1st place in the B1G with 15 points.

Michigan has 3 regular season games remaining with 2 B1G games left.

  • 10/24 vs Michigan State (3:30pm/BTN)
  • 10/26 vs New Hampshire (1pm)
  • 11/2  at Ohio State (Noon/MGoBlueTV)

sparty (7-6) recently dropped out of the top-20 and the buckeyes are last place in the B1G without a conference win.

I'm not saying, but I'm just saying. If this Michigan team can team can play like they did tonight in their final two B1G games, they will win (at least a share) the toughest conference in the country. If I had to vote for who the best Michigan team of the fall athletic season was, it's Michigan Field Hockey.

Michigan Volleyball (9-8, 4-3 B1G) pounded Rutgers on the road tonight for their third straight win and their straight sweep. Michigan has not lost a set in their last 3 matches. The scores were 25-20, 25-19, 25-21. Abby Cole had another big night with 21 kills and proves to be the key. She was in the 20s in Michigan's win prior to tonight when they upset #8 Nebraska.

Michigan started off slow but are white hot right now. They travel to Maryland tomorrow as part of their travel package.

Here's what else is going on this weekend for Michigan-

Tomorrow
Volleyball: at Maryland (7pm)
#10 Ice Hockey: vs #19 New Hampshire (7:35pm/BTN Plus)

Sunday
#24 Women's Soccer: vs Ohio State (2pm)

Congrats Ladies! Great achievement!

Not to make this at all about DB, but one thing I'll say in his defense, he's made a big investment in our non-revenue sports. Obviously he's not the one coaching them, but his investments are undoubtedly paying off in their own way.

But this is about field hockey, not DB. Congrats again!

Please don't take this as wishing ill on field hockey or any other sport. I'm just not a huge fan of the AD's ever expanding budget driven by football tickets and MBBall/Football TV money.
