FB new Nutrition plan under Herbert is well received by players

Here's one reason to be optimistic about the 2018 season. It sounds like our players are not only getting stronger and bigger, but it seems their morale has improved too because of the new meal plan. Things can only get better for our Offensive line with Herbert, and Wariner and if that group gets better, this team could be scary good. https://www.google.com/amp/s/247sports.com/college/michigan/Article/Mic…

From a former D-1 assistant S&C coach, this is how I’d rate the S&C hires over the last 10 years, since Gittleson left. Gittleson was a phenomenal coach, but ran an outdated system referred to as high intensity training, or HIT. It worked then, but not so much in today’s age of strength, speed and size. Tolbert was also a HIT guy, which doesn’t take advantage of the huge opportunity to gain strength fast between the ages of 18-22 like a modern system like Herbert’s can. This is difficult for fans to grasp who think players just show up and lift and run. Anyway... Aaron Wellman- C+ Barwis- B+ Tolbert- C Herbert- A

He's referring to this (D-line, not O-line):

(Fun story that's been floating around college football circles: Under the former management, Michigan linemen, in order to gain weight, were allegedly told to "eat a whole pizza" at night. [not alleged; directly stated by Pat Massey, the lineman in question, to Brent Musberger. -ed] I'm amazed they didn't flounder like sick race horses on Saturdays. [Uh... some did. -ed] Also: no squats. The most basic fundamental move in weight lifting simply did not exist in their machine-dominated training program.)

You can find an old MGoBlog post with this information.

Also, you're assuming that O-lines of the past reached their potential because of (rather than in spite of) outdated ideas in the areas of nutrition and strength & conditioning.

Prior to Herbert lifts were at different times of the day. Herbert has instituted 6am lifts followed by huge breakfast. Under Tolbert, there was no morning training table. The kids were required to check-in for breakfast between 7-9am at either SQ or NQ cafeteria. But most were like Payne - just grabbing something minor on the way to class. This change alone will make all the difference in the world. Edit - also, the new weight room allows the entire team to lift at one time in a really inspiring environment with music and team activities. The old weight room was way too small and out-dated.

One thing to keep in mind is that what you hear and see during the spring needs to be taken with, not a grain, but a cup of salt.

We'll know what this team is made up of come Saturdays in Sept, Oct and especially Nov.

Words mean nothing. The Action, The Action, The Action on Saturday is what matters.

Peppers almost starved to death when he played and now these kids are eating like kings. They should get paid.

Clearly the real story here is the improved accessability of Chick-fil-a.  Give me a couple spicys, fries and a bigass frosted lemonade on the regular and I'll put on good weight in a hurry.

There's a video of Herbert on YouTube giving a presentation to what appear to be high school coaches. His attention to detail on the nutrition aspect is almost obsessive. I recommend anyone who wants more of an insight to Herbert's approach to check it out.
