ESPN Basically Hits MSU with 2 x 4
It's not so much the article as the headline. Good God. Do you think this will give them a chip on their shoulder?

HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
October 14th, 2015 at 10:56 AM ^
ugh
This week, as I knew it would, is fucking dragging; worse than last week. I just need Saturday to be here already. Thankfully I am off work Friday, but that's only because of a funeral I must attend.
October 14th, 2015 at 11:11 AM ^
When you walk into the funeral, look around at the sad faces in bemusement and ask "Who died?!"
October 14th, 2015 at 11:38 AM ^
got a pretty good laugh.
October 14th, 2015 at 11:53 AM ^
+1 for having the cajones
October 14th, 2015 at 12:13 PM ^
Different. We treat most funerals like a party. They start out somber, then some booze starts to flow, someone makes a joke, and we're off to the races. Most of the day is spent catching up with people we only see at funerals and telling funny and/or embarrassing stories about the deceased.
October 14th, 2015 at 12:50 PM ^
a funeral of a non-family member? that really takes some balls
October 14th, 2015 at 1:33 PM ^
No that would make you a dick.

Polish or Irish?
In my family (100% Poles), funerals are treated like family reunions and basically the "refreshment room" at a funeral parlor, typically turns into "Ciocia Babs's kielbasa & kraut emporium" with a healthy dose of beer hidden underneath the cans of Diet Coke in the cooler. Minimum 2 card games going on.
October 14th, 2015 at 2:41 PM ^
100% here too.
Your description is very familiar. Except no one is hiding their booze.
October 14th, 2015 at 3:34 PM ^
initial post and was like, "uh, isn't that how all funerals are?" Polish here too.
October 14th, 2015 at 1:54 PM ^
I attend funerals all of the time. I will be directing one for MSU on Saturday beginning at 3:30 pm. We have seating for 107,601 at the Church of Harbaugh if you would like to join us.

Thank God they mentioned the removal of the countdown clocks!

So this is the jerkoff that kept asking about the clocks!
October 14th, 2015 at 10:58 AM ^
is going to be so jacked for this game. I doubt this article will really be the thing that gets them there but they will literally be trying to draw blood on Saturday.
October 14th, 2015 at 10:59 AM ^
This game is going to be a cage fight
October 14th, 2015 at 11:04 AM ^
is gonna have two woodsheds
October 14th, 2015 at 12:09 PM ^
So two spankings? Sounds right to me.
October 14th, 2015 at 1:50 PM ^
I hope they come ready to play, I hope they play their best game of the year.
And I hope we shut them out again.
October 14th, 2015 at 10:59 AM ^
but yeah that's going to be huge for them.
October 14th, 2015 at 11:01 AM ^
It is the sort of thing that will raise the ire of the Spartans, but it won't put a chip on their shoulder. Their whole identity is about always having a chip on their shoulder. That's their prerogative, I suppose - it seems like an unduly negative outlook but whatever.
I thought it was interesting that the article mentioned that in the 1950s the Spartans were the only B1G school offering scholarships, and that fact angering Michigan (and presumably other schools). That was a tidbit either of which I was unaware or that I had forgotten.
Anyway, truth-of-the-matter notwithstanding, I can see how that headline would vex MSU. Which is fine by me.
October 14th, 2015 at 11:03 AM ^
Not sure there's any more room on those shoulders....
October 14th, 2015 at 12:02 PM ^
That would be brilliant on a Gameday sign. That, or the Rodney Dangerfield Photoshop of D'Antoni.

I'd never heard this before:
But with 11th-hour help from UM, Michigan State gained membership in 1949 and began play in the Big Ten in 1953.
Why did we have a change of heart?
October 14th, 2015 at 11:20 AM ^
I remember hearing that when Chicago left in 1946, some of the schools being considered to fill the spot were Pitt, Notre Dame, Nebraska, Iowa State and a few others. I think Don Canham talks at length about this in "From The Inside" - I may have to pull that one from the shelf when I get home and refresh myself on how the Big Ten picked up MSU.
October 14th, 2015 at 11:44 AM ^
Yeah, my understanding had been that we had backed Pitt's candidacy. Pitt being in the Big Ten would have had some interesting repercussions. I wonder if PSU would have ever risen to prominence.
October 14th, 2015 at 3:53 PM ^
I recall in the show about the UM vs OSU tie game, MSU supposedly voted against UM to go to Rose Bowl because UM had voted to keep MSU out of Big Ten years earlier. This could never really be proven but was a strong possibility.

If the headline read, "MSU is the Top Dog in the state." He would be like,"See? We're not men in their eyes, we're just dogs!"
October 14th, 2015 at 11:16 AM ^
works though. He manages to keep his players hungry despite consistent success. It is amazing that Michigan State is seen as "going for the upset" this week but sure enough, that is the narrative.
October 14th, 2015 at 11:10 AM ^
the article also calls them the "State Agricultural College" as opposed to the Michigan Agricultural College - and sadly makes no references to them originally being the "Farmers" before they were the spartans
