ugh

This week, as I knew it would, is fucking dragging; worse than last week. I just need Saturday to be here already. Thankfully I am off work Friday, but that's only because of a funeral I must attend.

Polish or Irish?

In my family (100% Poles), funerals are treated like family reunions and basically the "refreshment room" at a funeral parlor, typically turns into "Ciocia Babs's kielbasa & kraut emporium" with a healthy dose of beer hidden underneath the cans of Diet Coke in the cooler. Minimum 2 card games going on.

is going to be so jacked for this game.  I doubt this article will really be the thing that gets them there but they will literally be trying to draw blood on Saturday.

It is the sort of thing that will raise the ire of the Spartans, but it won't put a chip on their shoulder.  Their whole identity is about always having a chip on their shoulder.  That's their prerogative, I suppose - it seems like an unduly negative outlook but whatever.

I thought it was interesting that the article mentioned that in the 1950s the Spartans were the only B1G school offering scholarships, and that fact angering Michigan (and presumably other schools).  That was a tidbit either of which I was unaware or that I had forgotten.

Anyway, truth-of-the-matter notwithstanding, I can see how that headline would vex MSU.  Which is fine by me.

I'd never heard this before:

But with 11th-hour help from UM, Michigan State gained membership in 1949 and began play in the Big Ten in 1953.

Why did we have a change of heart?

I remember hearing that when Chicago left in 1946, some of the schools being considered to fill the spot were Pitt, Notre Dame, Nebraska, Iowa State and a few others. I think Don Canham talks at length about this in "From The Inside" - I may have to pull that one from the shelf when I get home and refresh myself on how the Big Ten picked up MSU.

the article also calls them the "State Agricultural College" as opposed to the Michigan Agricultural College - and sadly makes no references to them originally being the "Farmers" before they were the spartans
