ESPN: Arizona Coach Sean Miller Discussed $100k Payment to Recruit On Wiretap

Submitted by stephenrjking on

According to this report, Arizona head coach Sean Miller was caught on wiretaps discussing a $100,000 payment to secure the recruitment of top prospect Deandre Ayton, who does indeed play for Arizona this year.

If this is true, this is the first huuuuge revelation from the case.

Worth noting: This alone checks basically every box of details that the leaks described would come out in the case: Lottery pick, big-time coach, top NCAA seed, etc. So this could, theoretically, be the biggest story that will be discovered.

But nobody believes this is all that there is. We may not get all the details we deserve, but something is happening, and Miller is done if this is true. And there's no reason to believe it's not true.

The question is, how many more people does this investigation catch.

I hope the full ramifications of this investigation are felt during the 2018-2019 season. Michigan will be missing MAAR, but should be in title contention. Would be nice if some typical top programs were out of the mix.

"How's the weather in East Lansing right now? Oh it's beautiful! To me it feels like its 80 degrees. I won't go into specific detail about it but know that I fully support the incredible atmospheric conditions we're having right now."

Maybe he is disgusted - actually yeah, I'm sure he is - but there is no way in hell he's surprised.

None of this is news to anyone who has any familiarity with the workings of big-time college sports. The only novel thing is that it made it into the news.

Agents, marketing firms and apparel companies hoping to land top draft picks.  Pay them to go to a coach you know will assist you when it comes time for the kid to sign deals.  Its a great big game of gambling where they hope they paid enough to sign the players when they turn pro.  Boosters may have a little to do with it but after all that has come out so far, boosters seem like a small infraction.

God imagine paying someone 100k to play basketball, cheating your ass off rampantly, and you still can't even make a Final Four. Well done Arizona, your battle to determine who is more incompetent between you and ASU rages on
