Very classy status considering the circumstances.

and how does anyone know if he were told six months ago, but didn't want to hear it, and instead, try to up his game his senior year, and still fall short?
January 20th, 2016 at 2:48 PM ^
So much this! Bo was cut from the same cloth as all great football coaches. If you aren't helping the team you can kick rocks basically. Those who say Bo wouldn't do something like this are revisionist. Carr could be included in this as well. The interwebs has changed recruiting big time.
I'm kinda surprised that people are surprised. Brian pointed out that this was totally Harbaugh's recruiting MO when he was hired. Use the search. Harbaugh is gonna Harbaugh, he's been idolized by the UM faithful but he's not without reproach, who is?
This probably won't be the last time something like this happens. I'd like to see less of it than other top tier programs. But, with the current recruiting landscape it's gonna happen. And I honestly believe Harbaugh doesn't care what you think. He only cares about the team.
January 20th, 2016 at 12:37 PM ^
The millennials didn't give the "participation trophies" to themselves. It was the generation before them that started that. They thought it would be a good idea, not the millennial.
January 20th, 2016 at 12:16 PM ^
We'll never know why this happened but I wish him well. He would have been a great addition to this class.
January 20th, 2016 at 12:54 PM ^
He might not have made a great addition to the class, since Harbaugh seems to specifically think he wouldn't be.
January 20th, 2016 at 12:19 PM ^
Brian has been conspicuously silent in his opinion on the matter. He may want to speak up before the board cannibalizes itself.
January 20th, 2016 at 12:23 PM ^
pretty much give you his take. He has information that Swenson was informed that he would not be in the mix much to see the field and there was a mutual decision that he should look elsewhere. Somewhat shady on the part of the staff but ultimately nothing to get all worked up about. It may not be word for word but it will be some version of that.
January 20th, 2016 at 12:31 PM ^
That Swenson was told he wouldn't be seeing much, if any, playing time. How the fuck is that remotely shady? Telling people the truth is verboten? Better to lead him on while relegating him to being the team H2O engineer?
January 20th, 2016 at 12:40 PM ^
shoot the messenger. I was just telling you what his take would be. (And I was spectacularly correct)
January 20th, 2016 at 12:53 PM ^
I'm sure Dann O'Neill wished someone had told him that too.
January 20th, 2016 at 1:36 PM ^
I feel bad for the kid. The timing is poor and looks bad, but I think in the long run telling Swenson the truth now is better than having him transfer a year or two from now. If the coaches don't feel he fits or will be a contributor here, it is best to have that conversation now. Signing Day is only the first day you can sign. He can still take all 5 of his official visits and find a place where he is wanted. Some schools may be full, but I am guessing any school that is interested in him will have find a way make him fit.
January 20th, 2016 at 1:26 PM ^
it's not what was said but the timing of it. If Swenson was told months ago about how he was viewed by the staff then fine. If he was told last week, right before signing day, then that is kinda fucked up.
January 20th, 2016 at 1:41 PM ^
It is late, but Signing Day is not a deadline. It is actually the beginning. He could theoretically take all 5 of his official visits and sign after Signing Day. I get what you are saying though as some schools he may have considered are now full. But I am guessing that will probably be more a kind way to avoid telling him they are just not interested anymore. Any school that is really interested in him will probably be able to find a way to make a spot for him.
January 20th, 2016 at 12:30 PM ^
Looks like he heard you. OMG BRIAN DOES READ THE BOARD HI BRIAN!!!1!
January 20th, 2016 at 12:24 PM ^
"Before you get upset with the staff for waiting so long to inform the kid, relax, I’m told Swenson has been told for some time his commitment was not guaranteed and that he should have a backup plan, which he seems to have according to sources who now believe he has had contact with the staff at Northwestern."
http://gregghenson.com/rumor-longtime-ol-committment-out-of-2016-class/
Also, signing day is just the first day you can sign. Players have until April 1 to sign so he has plenty of time.
January 20th, 2016 at 12:33 PM ^
Its a "Quiet period" after January 30th, so the recruiting process becomes more difficult.
Plus the contact with Northwestern is extremely recent.
January 20th, 2016 at 12:43 PM ^
A quiet period does not stop a coach from contacting the recruit. He can still be recruited, just that coaches cannot watch competition in person. He can also visit campus and have a face-to-face. Not too much changes.
January 20th, 2016 at 12:38 PM ^
So is Greg Henson good now? Or is he only good when it makes people here feel better about what's going on?

Not to mention that even what he wrote didn't make it all better.
January 20th, 2016 at 12:56 PM ^
What he's saying makes perfect sense. He's not going out on a limb. And for the record, I don't care either way.
January 20th, 2016 at 12:58 PM ^
He's always been good.
January 20th, 2016 at 6:38 PM ^
I don't "feel" bad or uncomfortable about this. I do feel good we have a staff that's committed optimizing the talent on the roster and is capable of doing so. Someone's feelings were hurt (but maybe he knew this was a possibility earlier) when a coach who never offered him decided to go another way, his life wasn't ruined. Let's also remember a commitment from a recruit means nothing.
January 20th, 2016 at 12:26 PM ^
Time to take his phone off the charger. He's going to roast his battery!!
January 20th, 2016 at 12:26 PM ^
God let him know that he has another plan for him before NSD. I wish he'd let me know what his plan for me is. It sure would make life a lot easier.
January 20th, 2016 at 12:29 PM ^
me some insight Re: your plan. It is nothing you want to hear about in advance, trust me.
January 20th, 2016 at 12:49 PM ^
I knew it.
January 20th, 2016 at 12:30 PM ^
God's not the one making your plans, Hatter. Look for the thought bubbles floating up from below.
January 20th, 2016 at 12:28 PM ^
Good luck kid, hope to hear from you in the future doing great things.
My vote is cast on the side of being uncomfortable with this, so close to signing day.

In a text message to MLive, the four-star offensive tackle said Michigan recently pulled its scholarship offer and canceled his previously-scheduled official visit. He said the program did not provide a reason for doing so. He declined to speak further on the matter at this time.
January 20th, 2016 at 12:30 PM ^
Welp. Hope he finds another landing spot prior to NSD and class fill ups.
January 20th, 2016 at 12:51 PM ^
and wrong if it's true. The NCAA really needs to get rid of the rule preventing the staff from talking about stuff like this. I'd feel a lot better about the situation if there was a good explanation for it.
January 20th, 2016 at 12:28 PM ^
Best of luck to em.

can't speak further on this issue. People might be saying that was pretty shitty of him to say they just pulled his offer and never told him why. Then say I have nothing further to say. That in it self sounds pretty shitty to me so we will see.

Baumgartner just put this up. While it says he just got the word, it actually doesn't contradict other sources saying he knew he was on watch for a while. All the best for the young man.

"While it says he just got the word, it actually doesn't contradict other sources saying he knew he was on watch for a while."
Can everyone please read this sentence over and over and over again? If this is out of the blue it sucks. If he was "on watch" still sucks a tad but very, very different.

Why is everyone this week all of a sudden seem like they are against what Harbaugh is doing here? Harbaugh's goal is to go out and get the best possible talent PERIOD...He was hired to change the culture and restore Michigan to the glory days. For all we know Harbaugh and his staff were up front with Swenson from the begginning that he could commit but that they were still going to recruit the position and at some point he might get squeezed out. Yes, its late in the process to be told your postion is no longer guaranteed but thats the nature of recruiting, most coaches would love to get all their recruits locked up but we all know that the last few weeks after the dead period is crazy. I mean heck some schools are still blind on signing day and have to cross the fingers that the work they did was enough. I for one believe that Michigan needs to get the best possible players and if it means squeezing someone from the bottom out then so be it.

Boy for how much MSU fans claim recruiting does not matter I am hearing quite a bit about our tactics from them
January 20th, 2016 at 12:50 PM ^
I never hear them say it doesn't matter. What they say is Stars don't matter. At least until you play Alabama, then the star rating of the ref's is all that matters because they were blatantly working to keep MSU out of the championship game.
January 20th, 2016 at 1:28 PM ^
Dude. State lost 38-0. Refs don't control an ass-whooping like that. A team exploited State's weaknesses and until State can get over the hump, it will happen again and again.

Yeah, but who signaled and awarded Alabama's FIVE TOUCHDOWNS? That's right, the refs.
Wake up sheeple!

Erik Swenson says Michigan recently called and pulled his offer, canceled his OV w/out a reason. He committed in '13 https://t.co/mtPzULuJiW

well that sucks

He had a visit with Drevno on the 5th of December. As of the 3rd of January he still thought he was coming here. This will always be debated as a he said/he said. I hope he does well and if he got screwed that he's the best opponent on the field when we play him.....but we still win
