From an advertising point of view. Fry and the Iowa athletic department needed to paint the locker rooms anyway, so it didn't cost them any money. In return Fry got hundreds of stories about how he's trying to turn things around at Iowa. We're obviously still seeing stories about it thirty years later. Did the pink walls actually have any effect on its opponents on game day? Aside from concerning opposing coaches, I really doubt it.

The pink coloring in the locker rooms (initially I don't think it was the entire locker rooms; I believe they've expanded it recently) was done because pink is a calming/relaxing tone. It was never intended as some sign of the feminism of the opposing team or an attempt to emasculate them. Hayden Fry was awesome, 100% pure Columbian awesome. EDIT: Sorry, posted before I watched the video. Oops.
