Eleven Warriors Article on Michigan's Trash Talking

Submitted by StephenRKass on

Over at Eleven Warriors, there is an article entitled LINK: The Clucking Up North. The column is about Molk's comments dissing OSU Center Brewster, Wisconsin's Konz, and other comments from Michigan recruits. (Pipkins on Schutt, and Magnuson's tweet. (**** OSU. It doesn't matter who their coach is, we will continue to whip their ass, and enjoy doing it.)

While I don't care for Ohio, Byrnes has a point. Sometimes it is better to shut your mouth, and let your play on the field do the talking. In my way of thinking, Michigan's record against Ohio over the last 10 years doesn't warrant a lot of trash talking. Hoke gets this, and actually, he must have conveyed it to the team. The guys doing the yapping are either done (Molk) or haven't started yet (Magnuson, Pipkins, even Dymonte Thomas.)

When we have flipped things, and dominate Ohio for multiple years, I'll feel better about guys talking.

I completely agree with you. Although we lead the all time series against Ohio, our play against them over the last 10 years has not been great. Ohio fans run their mouths regardless, and this year almost discounted our victory over them because  of their circumstance. I prefer  that we beat Ohio, and act like we have done it before. And that we expect it. Sometimes you say more when you just don't say anything. Lets win on the field and laugh at them making excuses.

They almost discounted our victory over them because of their circumstance? The circumstance of thier making?  If anything should be discounted it should be Tressel's run of success. He is proven cheater that has been given a show cause penalty which calls into question his whole tenure as coach.  They also had every player back from suspension at that point.

I'd prefer it if they took the high road, but I don't know what difference games five years ago makes on a recruit who wants to beat Ohio badly.  I like that our guys hate Ohio so much.

I expect Michigan to smash them in the mouth in the game. I expect fans to mouth off. I expect trashy behavior from Ohio and Columbus. (cooler poopers, anyone?)

But for the team, I love what Hoke and Mattison bring. No excuses. Play hard, play clean, just do it. Maybe the best example of this was after the Michigan State game. Hoke didn't complain, and didn't whine. But you can can bet that Michigan will bring it this next year.

There has ALWAYS been a lot of talk in this rivalry. OSU fans have forgotten a bit, because for the past several years, no Michigan fan or player who was sane dared talk. That is no longer the case.

Now, if they're actually saying truly mean stuff, that's one thing. But this rivalry has NEVER been short on billboard material.

and raise you one Charles Woodson beauty:

"They do the talkin', I do the walkin'"...as he capped off his magical 1997 season with a receivng TD, a punt return TD, an INT, and a TKO of David Boston vs. Ohio

Honestly, its not even worth posting this on the message board. Yes 11W has way more michigan hatred and flamebait on their website then Mgblog but we do the same things everyonce in awhile (the posters that is, not Brian, Ace, ect). Haters gonna hate.

Let's not dwell on what the folks in COlumbus think.  I mean, since when do we really care?  Do we expect them to do anything other than whine about whatever is going on with Michigan?  We aren't really in a position to be puffing out our chests TOO much, just because we are supposed to be above all that.

Let them complain about Molk, et al.  They will throw a little hissy fit and you know what, we would probably be a bit annoyed if Brewster mouthed off about Molk.  Ugh.  I would just rather we ignore them.

My feelings exactly.  I have no problem with having a discussion about trash talking vs taking the high road (Personally I'm with Kass, I'd rather we were the silent kings of the conference), but there have been too many threads lately attempting to rationally argue against 11W stories.  Honestly, there is NO redeeming quality to that website.  You can't bring a knife to a gun fight with a blind paralytic who can't feel you stabbing him and who traded someone a tattoo to have them snipe you from a rooftop.

Fab Five, anyone? Bring attitude to the game. No one talking trash thinks that they're playing football using words. It's just good-natured confidence (at least in these examples). It's not like Jalen is talking about people's mothers (or worse...)

Michigan's overall record the last 4 years vs Ohio should not preclude him from offering his opinion of how he personally stacks up against other centers in the league, talent-wise (how he phrased it? Another matter entirely).

If he was caught saying Ohio sucks etc then yes, the first retort could - and probably should - be well hey, they had quite the streak vs Michigan. Yet, iirc, he simply disagreed with other evaluations of his stock at center in the NFL vs other Big 10 centers.

I didnt like the thing after the Ohio game where Denard chucks the ball up in the air and everyone collapses when it lands... there is a time and a place for it, and to me its mocking what should be a VERY respected rival....  without Ohio there is no rivalry..  This is what most fail to understand, about Ohio.  I for one, root for them (privately) for every game except ours...and the true Ohio fans do so privately for us.

That Denard bomb thing shouldn't be done vs Ohio...or at least do it after they leave the field, NOT during handshakes... I would hope Hoke said something... I dont recall Ohio ever mocking us like that during handshakes after they whipped us.

You know what is really respecting the rivalry? Going for 2 up by 36 in the 4th and doing so because you "couldn't go for 3." yeah, we owe them a lot of respect

I always rooted for ohio to win till they played us, that is until that cheatin' vest started roaming their sidelines and ruined the integrity of the rivalry during his 10 year reign.

People talk about ohio's record in the aughts against us? They fucking cheated the whole time!

Case in point:

2002, they don't beat us without Clarett, do they?

2004, 2005 and 2006 they don't beat us without Troy Smith, do they? Does anybody believe he only got $500? Really? I got some land in the Everglades I'd like to sell you.

Also, those weren't the only 2 guys by a longshot. I now have so much disdain for them and couldn't care less what their record is before they play us. That rivalry doesn't mean as much to me anymore, sorry. ohio can stink up the joint always for all I care, SCREW THEM CHEATIN' A-HOLES!!!

P.S., The lamest thing to me is how ohio fans brag about beating us and forget they were cheating while doing it, just pathetic!

"With the arenas David Molk, Ondre Pipkins and Erik Magnuson are stepping in to, they'd be wise to shelve their words. The lions waiting for them don't have much use for those . "

But I thought that's why Ohio had  that "Exploring" degree program? I understand your point about how the record in the rivalry being less than stellar in the last decade, but I think this particular  rivalry will always have this sort of talk  associated with it regardless of recent success or lack thereof. It's that deep.

In any event, it's not like this guy wasn't trying to fan the flames himself - "Satan's Mitten", "quiet confidence in Urban Meyer's dominance of Brady Hoke and his Temple  Of Blown Wind", "Hoke's inferiority complex", among others, and to offend our orthographic sensibilities, "the year pryor". Freudian slip,  perhaps? A poorly delivered, hypocritical admonishment, at best.

Cry me a fucking river. We got dominated by them for a decade when they had rosters tainted with ineligible players. We had to listen to their fans talk shit for years nonstop because the playing field wasn't level. But yeah, how dare our players and recruits say anything bad about their most hated rival. Bily Price says hi.

Seriously.  Michigan players talking shit to OSU players is hardly article worthy for 11W, and said article is certainly not thread worthy.  When RR didn't say enough about OSU, he didn't get the rivalry.  Now that our players are being outspoken about it, they're out of line.  Give me a fucking break.

Mike Hart talked a lot of trash.  So did Harbaugh.  This happens, guy.  Get over it.

1) the recruits are the ones that play the game

2) I would be very surprised if OSU and Meyer needed/ used trash talking to get "extra pumped" for The Game.

I'mhappy the recruits are thinking about the rivalry, and frankly, Molk is correct in his statement.

Its called swagger. Confidence. And after the last 9 previous years I am all about it. We are an elite program with elite talent who need to act like it. We have been through some dark shit as fans and I could care less if people think we need to take the high road. We take that in how we handle almost everything else. Its good to see that our players take pride, embrace the rivalry and are ready to go out and do the damn thing. Jesus is it that slow of a news day???

I honestly dont see the big deal here;

1. Its Ohio vs Michigan-the best damn rivarly in sports

2.Yea Molk spouted off---he deserves to he is an undersized, underweight center who everyone wrote off as nothing more than practice team fodder but he discovered the weightroom and became Rimington award winning 41 rep bad ass.  The team loosing to Ohio 4/5 years is not completely his doing.  He was arguably our best and grittest lineman who showed up the blue chippers at the combine.

3. The recruits--they dont necessarily have the right to talk at this point but that will end as soon as they actually don the winged helmet.  HOWEVA, Hoke and Co. have instilled the Bo mentality of B10 Championships then we'll talk about a MNC and who do we have to play to win a B10 Champ? Ohio/MSU/ND so they get it.  They know the game before they even set on campus and they are playing their part.  I love that attitude especially with these Ohio kids who have something to prove.

Honestly, Ohio fans bombard Pipkins and Magnuson with tweets about Ohio, and how Michigan sucks, and how they made a bad choice etc.  You have to expect some animosity from our players.  You can only be harrased so much without saying "**** Ohio".  Hell.  I say "**** Ohio", and I barely have any contact with Ohio fans, but the ones I do discuss football with (for the most part) warrant that.

It's a rivalry.  That's how things go.  They can't act like they are these chaste beacons of sportsmanship.  Because they sure as hell are not.

A Proof.

Sports = A contest among athletes to prove athletic superiority in a given domain.

Athlete = One who competes in a sport. Athletes may be divided by sport, by experience, and by quality of athletic talent.

Professional Sports = Athletic contests among the most athletically talented and experienced athletes.

College Sports = Athletic contests among less atheltically talented and inexperienced athletes.

Logical Conclusion: Professional Sports are better at achieving the base goal of sports. They will more effectively prove athletic superiority.

Of course, we all know that's bullcrap. Pro sports have NOTHING on college sports. Why? Because of "Little Brother", "Ohio" and "That School Up North". Because of Trash Talk.

much less what the Elven Warriors think. He is also intelligent enough to know what he is doing, and he is the one who has to back it up. He is working out with Woodley, Foote, Ray, and others. I could be wrong, but I'd suspect that he might get feedback from them that would actually count for something.

It might also behoove everyone to remember that what Molk said was after this tidbit:

Konz said shortly after the lift that at the center position, too much shouldn't be made of combine measurables such as bench-press reps. "There's so many variables, I don't chalk it up much," he said. "I try to use my technique, but that's something I'll work out." When asked about Molk's 41 reps -- more than twice what he posted in the same event -- Konz said: "It'll translate a little bit (to NFL play), but at the same time, you need to know what kind of football player a guy is."

If the incoming recruits don't know it now, they will soon enough. I am looking forward to seeing young Mr. Pipkins laugh in our collective faces.

I like the way the team is handling things - do it on the field. You might end up with an SI cover like #29.

I don't think that anything that is posted in Ohio is worthy of a really long thread here, but that's just me. That isn't a knock on the post, just the effort on our part.

The fact they're miffed just means we're getting in their heads, and we're a threat again. Better than the pity when they were cheating their asses off. Love how they're now whistling past the graveyard.
