Think about this. PSU wins out. OSU wins out (and thus beats us). PSU goes to the B1G Championship and wins. PSU will finish higher than us in the rankings, I would guess. Who would have thought that after we trounced them 482 - 3???

but...Right now, I just don't see how we can beat OSU in Columbus.

I know it sounds like trolling, but look at my history - I'm not a troll. I'm just hard pressed to see how the team I just watched in Iowa on Saturday can stick with OSU at their place.

OSU has been playing fantastic football at home, blowing out basically everybody. We have not played well on the road against teams with a pulse (non-Rutgers), especially offensively.

If this game is at the Big House, I have some serious hope. Right now, I'm just not seeing how we score enough to win, even if the defense keeps OSU to the 24-27 range. I really hope I'm full of it... :(

It is hard to overestimate just how much of a home field advantage Clemson has in Death Valley.  Even Clemson fans admit that the fans won that game for them.  It would make a major difference for them to play on a neutral field.  I was at the Clemson-Pitt game yesterday and the place was bonkers.  When Pitt had the ball, it was incredibly loud.  And that was for lowly Pitt.  Those who were at the Louisville game say that it was absurdly loud and crazy.

has been ranking teams keeping OSU in striking distance after their loss to Penn State, you can see that if Michigan had continued winning and ended up undefeated going to Columbus that Michigan would have been ranked second and Ohio State either 5th or 4th but in a position to advance to the playoffs depending on the outcome of the game with Michigan.

A close outcome with OSU winning and Michigan having just one loss would have meant both in the playoffs with Alabama squaring off against the lowest ranked. And if Michigan had won than the Buckeyes would be out. But now there is no chance for that because no team with two losses is going to the playoffs.

Michigan might be dropped lower than Clemson in the CPC rankings and possibly ahead of Louisville given that it has no signifcant wins ohter than Florida State which Clemson also beat.

Before the year started, I thought Michigan would go 11-1 losing to Iowa and beating Ohio State. Maybe because I was trying to be more objective about the difficulty of going undefeated. This season will be wonderful if we can win that game in Columbus. And that's how this team will have to channel its energy and focus with our greatrful support.

It'll be interesting. 3 of the power conferences have a legit chance of having a two loss team being the confence champion - Big 12 (OU or OSU, WVU still in play with one loss but they still have to play OU and they lose the head to head tiebreaker with OSU), Big 10 (Wisky or PSU) and the Pac 12 (CU, Utah and WSU, Washington still in it with one loss). Would the committee put both OSU and Louisville in the playoffs ahead of those teams? OSU would at least have a good resume. The only thing Louisville has going for it is a win over a 3 loss FSU (4 if they lose to Florida) and probably lyrics the Heisman trophy winner.

losing to Ohio State and getting into the playoff was always a pipe dream

Except that as of 8:00 PM last night, it was no longer a pipe dream.  It was reality.  Until we blew it.

With Clemson and Washington losing, we would have been #2.  If we lost a close game to OSU, we would still get in.

Alabama would get in, The Big Ten champ would get in, and the ACC champ would get in.

That would leave the 4th slot for a one-loss #2 Michigan team, Louisville, a one (or more) loss Pac 12 team, and a one (or more loss) Big 12 team.

Michigan would have a much better resume than any of those other teams for the 4th slot.

Now the honor of a one-loss non-Big Ten champion getting into the CFP goes to our "friends" in Columbus.  If they win out they are going to the CFP, even without being Big Ten champs.

Sucks, but we did it to ourselves.

"it's still fundamentally ridiculous to ask a group of coaches who have no time to watch the other games to vote to decide this."

Is it really in weeks 8, 9, 10? I think its rediculous in the first half of the season. But at this piont all coaches really need to know are records, who played who, and the week's results. I think the coaches poll is fine at this point in the season. Whether its necessary or not is a different question (I think its basically redundant).

Yes, it's still ridiculous.  During the season, coaches are watching film of their opponents. They're not likely to be watching games played in other conferences.

Besides, it's an open secret that most, if not all, of these ballots aren't even filled out by the coaches themselves, but by someone else in the athletic department.  The whole point of a coaches' poll is that we're getting the expert analysis of the coaches themselves, and they're not even doing it.

So you think that at this piont in the season, even if the coaches had more time to look at games, they would be voting on more than each team's records, the week's opponents, and wins and losses?  I dont think so. I completely agree with your argument that the poll is rediculous in the first half to 2/3rds of the season. It would be most valuable then, when teams have played few games, to use coaches' expert analyses to rank teams. Yet that's not happening.

But at this point I dont think the argument holds. At this point, even if the coaches had all the time in the world, they would still be voting based on records, the current week's opponents, and who won and lost (not some expert analysis of each game). Which is what they do (or some assistant does). It's redundant at this point, but not rediculous.

Yes, they are weird about that.  They put TA&M at #4 just for losing to Alabama.  They have a love affair with Louisville just for losing to Clamson.

They are trying so hard to enforce quailty scheduling that they've lost all common sense.  Louisville does not have a single big win, yet they will certainly be ranked ahead of us.

They need a slap upside the head and back to reality.

That is the dumbest thing I've heard all day. They had TAMU at 4 because to that point they had wins over Auburn, Tennessee, and Arkansas who were all ranked (Auburn in top 10). Meanwhile, Washington didn't have a single ranked win. Michigan will surely be ranked ahead of Louisville because of scheduling and you'll be changing your tune on the playoff committee real quick.
