Easy way to find a Michigan friendly bar

Submitted by MGoGrendel on

So, you want to hang with Michigan Alumni to watch a game.  But, the "MGobar finder" is very out dated.

Chances are, there is an Alumni organization that hangs in a bar close to where you are.  Or, someone from the local Alumni Club can make recommendations better than locals on this board.  Here is a simple, snark free way to find a bar:

Use the Alumni Club Finder to identify a club by a State:

http://alumni.umich.edu/connect/club-finder

  • Click on the U of M club for that state
  • Contact the people listed under “connect with us” (Twitter, FB, or LinkedIn)
  • Ask them questions to meet your needs
  • Get in your Uber ride and enjoy the night.

Offer not valid in Dublin, Singapore, or Jupiter

PS – you may find a link to local Red Wings, Lions, and Tiger fans within the Alumni pages.

Damn it, why did you post that?  I wanted to ask about UM friendly bars in Buenos Aires!!!

Actually there are no bars listed on the Friendly Bars Map and there is no alumni association there, so if anyone knows please let me know.

Honest question here.  Why do so many people get so upset when a fellow MgoBlogger posts about wanting to know of a place in a city to watch a UM game?  Sure, there's the interwebs, but maybe someone wants more of an 'insider' recommendation and maybe share a brew with a fellow Mgoperson.  For example, here in Chicago, the Diag and Rockit are frequently listed on the webs as UM friendly bars, but what if someone just wanted a candid opinion of the two, the atmosphere, the people, the gamewatching experience?  If the title of a thread is accurately described, it can be easily ignored by those not interested in whatever city, leaving the discussion to those who do wish to engage, and maybe, God forbid, make some new friends.  I don't know.  Neg away.

I stopped caring a while ago but I think people get mad because it's the last game of the regular B1G season and they would rather see posts about actual sports than where a bar is. Also those same people are the ones who are already know of the mgoblog alumni bar locator map. The OPs for those type of "Where is the UM bar in Estonia?" posts seem to be mostly new to the blog and haven't ventured around the site to know we have that resource.

I"m not bitching about the OP, and I think I was rather respectful.  Instead, I was asking about all of the negativity that the type of threads OP was addressing receives.  You are right, it IS a brotherhood, man, except, apparently, when you want to find the best place to engage in that brotherhood in a particular city.

I guess I disagree.  When it comes to candid opinions related to Michigan sports, the opinions I care about most are fellow Mgobloggers--not the alumni assoc, not a discussion on a facebook page, not a twitter account.  There's a built-in shared community here with shared interest and so much knowledge; I find it baffling that that source is not to be tapped when it comes to this topic.  Oh well.  That seems to be the tenor of this board.  Curious is all.

The humble-braggers--"Hey, where can a guy in Ibiza watch the UM game while being fed peeled grapes by scantily-clad women by the pool?  Holla back, yo!"--deserve the scorn and snark they receive, but most of the inquiries are sincere, "Hey, I'm in Dublin for work and was hoping to watch some Michigan football with fellow Wolverines.  Any Mgopeeps here?"  What is so wrong with the latter?

but, what you're failing to realize is that asking other Michigan football fans...on a Michigan football blog...in a board post is the wrong place to ask questions about where to watch Michigan games.

I have posted before looking for out of town bars, and I had a fantastic time in New Orleans at Prytania Bar, with the alumni club, and a fantastic atmosphere, despite Satan's punt.

The thing I have noticed is that people from the cities in question love answering and sharing feedback, but the snark comes from everyone else...I would imagine the people that always watch from their couch, or their bar in the city they never leave.

You're probably right, but one would think asking other Michigan football fans...on a Michigan football blog is the BEST place to get this info.  Like asking a World of Warcraft message board where the best place for a LAN party in City - X.  Only Mgoblog has the obvious been turned upside down.

By the way, I don't play WOW, so I could be off-base with that example.

I'm going to the game on Saturday. Any suggestions for how I can watch the game? Thanks in advance for your advice.

Maybe on every Thursday or Friday, we have a sticky weekly "where to watch" thread. We have weekly drinking threads, posbangs, predictions, etc. I think this would resolve a lot of issues.
