Early buckle up warning for June 6

Submitted by BlueCube on

Per Steve Wiltfong, Chris Evans will be making his decision June 6 which is a week after his Michigan visit. Crystal Balls heavily in Michigan's favor and many jumping on board since his visit and offer.

Michigan is gettting a lot of Crystal Balls after a very good weekend of visits.

There were a lot of positives on the Recruiting Roundup on WTKA today also. It's worth a listen. Major inroads made with recruits.

People at first thought that Michigan was done at running back after pulling in commitments from Matt Falcon (Southfield, Michigan) and Kingston Davis (Prattville, Alabama), but the team has a desperate need for playmakers and Evans could give them a very nice change-of-pace back and home run threat.

I personally think his best fit is in the slot.

Enis I think has a bit more versatility, though I see him as a better zone stretch runner than what Harbaugh runs. I think Enis could likely fit equally well at RB, WR, or Safety at the next level. While I haven't heard otherwise, I personally don't see why their recruitments should overlap too much (in that, there would be no reason not to take both if both wanted in, IMO).

I agree that Evans looks more like a slot than a true running back, although I'm not very impressed with Evans's speed. I just keep waiting for Michigan to pull in another player who can run away from opponents, and it feels like we haven't really seen that since Denard Robinson was here. Harris and Cole have a chance at WR, and I like Falcon at RB, but none of them have seen the field yet at Michigan.

To be fair, how many RBs have we had that can really pull away from people?

Mike Hart was often cited for his lack of "pull away" speed

Brandon Minor was a thumper

ATrain was well rounded, but I think he's more remembered for his physicality and size rather than his speed.

Minor had some pull-away speed. So did Carlos Brown, Chris Perry, and Anthony Thomas (IIRC, Thomas had a couple 80-yard runs). Michael Cox had good speed, too. It's true that we had some guys like Askew and Hart playing running back over the years, but I think it's nice to have at least one guy on the squad who can pop a big run.

As great and fun to watch as Hart was, he wasn't as good as the guys at places like Ohio State, Texas, and USC, and that is part of the reason why we went 0-6 against those teams when he was here.

To Magnus's point, the only real breakaway guys I can think of off the top of my head are Denard and maybe Breaston (though his magic was pretty much all reserved for special teams).  Other than those two you probably have to go back to mid-90's backs like Tim and Tyrone to find a guy who would outrun the field if given a chance.

Yep. As much as I appreciate Hart, he was the beneficiary of some very good offensive lines. I don't mean to diminish his efforts - he was clearly a hard worker, a good leader, a pretty talented runner, etc. - but there's a reason that he wasn't drafted very high and didn't stick in the NFL. He was good for 5.0 yards/carry or so and would usually break a tackle or two in the process, but with those offensive lines, I think a guy like Fitzgerald Toussaint could have done just as well (pre-broken leg).

His great ability was jump cuts, picking through traffic and finding the hole.  He was outstanding at it, and a great, great running back for Michigan.

If you're agreeing with Purplestuff, then I'll address you both in this reply - there are a lot of reasons M lost to those teams in that era, and I wouldn't include Mike Hart anywhere on it.  First, many of those games were unbelievably close.

UT and Vince Young barely beat M.  Hart had 21 carries for 83 yards as a true freshman.  Perhaps Vince Young's 192 yards and 4 TD's on the ground had more to do with that loss.  They lost by 1 point.

USC and their all-stars beat M when the figured out Lloyd didn't have any safeties.  Hart only had 47 yards on 17 carries, but the score was 32-18.  Josh Booty's near-400 yards and 4 TDs mattered a lot more in that one.

Troy Smith and the Buckeyes won one of the best games of the decade in Columbus, with Henne having a great game in part because of Hart's threat.  He had 142 yards and 3 TD's in that game.  They lost by 3 on the road.

I'm not going back any further because wincing, but you're re-writing history to fit a narrative.  Hart didn't have much of an NFL career?  Neither did Vince Young.  Was he good in college?  He was amazing.  Troy Smith flamed out in the NFL.  Was he good in college?  Yes, he was fantastic.  Same goes for Hart.

He looks like a a lot to me. A squirmy seam runner, catches really well in his film. Fast with a lot of Shake is something we don't really have right now (until canteen or Cole prove they've got it in the fall), so look for him to be an offensive weapon type.

This ensures that all players will be ripped AF (please NCAA don't investigate this), we will never lose again and none of the players will get in trouble.
