Fuck off for thinking like this. People who are in charge of things need to be held responsible when bad things happen, especially when they are tragic (death of a player) and VERY EASILY PREVENTABLE. This constant need to "blame everyone else but me" is what is destroying this country. Durkin not physically being at that practice means fuck all about whether he is innocent or not. If you don't think a leader's tone matters, then you are part of the fucking problem.

How does the AD and all members of the board of Regents survive this? They don't the only way the stench can possibly be bleached away is if they started over from the top down. They need to reboot the whole school and heads have to roll. It's the only way to dig the school out of the hole they dug. A whole lot of people forgot the first rule of holes, "when in one stop digging"

I registered because I can't believe everyone here and in the news media overlook the obvious:

The Governor, who appointed most of the Board of Trustees, publicly expressed his disapproval. The Maryland legislature has scheduled a hearing to look into the matter. The Comptroller chimed in. Politicians right and left are criticizing the decision.

What is happening? Has a mass of politicians suddenly evolved moral backbones and turned against their own power structure? They have dug down deep inside and found their moral outrage? Why do they care so much, right now ... right this moment ... on the last day of October in an even numbered year ...

Maybe, just maybe, it has something to do with the fact that the Governor and over half the legislature (as well as the Comptroller) are all going to be held accountable by the voters next Tuesday. I assume they know voters well: Voters forget; voters hardly even vote and incumbents are generally very safe. But an October Surprise bombshell, fresh in the minds of outraged voters - that can cost a lot of jobs. I can't tell you the Board of Trustees' motivations, but I'm confident that the Governor is not going to risk his job over a 10-15 football coach and $5 million (in someone else's budget). I expect that all the politicians look at it the same way: We could be at serious risk. Just get rid of this one football coach and we're fine - WTF are we waiting for? What was his name again?

Given their immoral, disgusting desire to keep Durkin, the Board made a major tactical error: They f*d their own political masters; they sh*t where they eat. If they had just waited 8 days to make the announcement, I expect there would have been substantially less response from the political class. Do you think it would affect the Governor in 4 years? Everyone else on the ballot in 2020 and 2022? If you think the Governor is outraged at Durkin, just imagine what he's saying about the Trustees who he appointed - his people, who owe him for their prominent jobs.

Notice that President Loh didn't act until the politicians spoke, giving him the political cover that he needed. It was the wise thing to do - I hope he planned it that way since the Board told him to keep Durkin. If he had fired Durkin without cover, then Durkin might have been back the next day. Loh kept his credibility - his authority - and got the job done. Somebody hire that man. Maybe he wants to run for president of something bigger?

What a fucking clown show. Good on the students for forcing the idiot people "running" their school to do the obviously right thing. Most or all of the board so go next.

This is cowardice.  Plain and simple.  How can you fire the only person fighting for the football team to have a full-time doctor?

Everybody but Durkin should be fired.  This is a fucking despicable decision.

The person who needs to be fired is Kevin Plank. The Under Armor founder who has basically invested in the Maryland athletic department (as a vehicle for promoting his brand) and was likely behind the reinstatement. The question is why?

The only rationale I can see is he believes, like you, that Durkin did nothing wrong (to be clear, I don’t agree with you — the fact players did not believe they could voice their concerns with regard to the trainer is enough for me to think he should be fired). But even that is not enough for a corporate damage-control team to sign off on reinstatement. So maybe it’s more about making sure Durkin gets paid on the way out, according to his buyout and without a lot of legal wrangling. They may be planning a big, splashy hire — the Nike/Oregon-like facilities are just coming on line this year. So it’s a message to prospective future coaches: we will have your back.

Life comes at you fast.  Seems like it was just last year that we were grumbling that we lost that in-demand DC Durkin after an embarrassing loss to tOsu.   Next thing you know, he’s alleged to have been directly responsible for the death of one of his players as head coach and is no longer coaching.   And a family lost their young son.   Wow.   Makes my small daily problems seem pretty insignificant.
