DTs

Why does it seem everyone is worried about our lack of recruiting the DT position? Aren't we running a 3-4 now? We have Mike Martin and Will Campbell. I'm sure some others as well. Do we need four awesome DTs so one can play? I'm more concerned about our LB corps.

I haven't heard many people worried about the " lack of recruiting the DT," I think people are more worried about all the 3 star recruits or the lack of true LBers but we are still recruiting jonathon hankins and shariff Boyd. I'm not worried about it.

I'm not worried about DTs at all. At least with recruiting. There are 3 good players on the roster now. Not experienced but good. I'm also confident we'll see 1-2 sign with this class. Now LBs, a little bit worried but we'll see how this recruiting class goes.

Probably having 2 UT's 1 primary (strong side) DE and 3 lb's with a tweener (deathbacker) at the fourth LB position. So yes, most of the time Michigan will probably run two DT and yes Michigan needs at least 2 DT's in this class.

Right. If you read gsimms' thing, and recall 1997 (and earlier), Michigan ran a 3-4, where the 3 down lineman were really 2 DT's (Josh Williams and Rob Renes) and 1 DE (Glenn Steele). They had Dhani at OLB, Sword and Copenhaver at ILB, and the 4th OLB was...James Hall, who led the team in sacks, and frequently played with his hand down. When people talk "deathbacker" this is essentially what they're referring to - James Hall's spot in the old Lloyd/Herrman defense. He needs to be strong enough to play like a DE but quick enough to cover a TE.

take into account likely attrition, injuries, and the like when looking at DT recruiting. Yes, we have 1 guy who proved he could play last year in Martin. Past that we have a unproven Saggese and freshman Campbell. In major college football, due to fatigue and rotations, you would want to have 4 or so guys that you could throw in at any moment and know that their not going to get caved in.
