Drankin' Open Thread
Two big wins from the Wolverines tonight., Californication OnDemand, liquor and good craft beer. Anyone having anything to drink? Any thoughts from around the world tonight?
Tanquaray martini's for me tonight, in addition to some Fat Tire later.

Cherry Coke Zero while doing Economic Analysis of Transportation Systems homework for my Masters and then mentally getting ready to go back into work tomorrow for hell. I hate real life....I need something stronger.

I'm finishing off a few Winter Lagers left over from the Super Bowl.
Does Vanderbilt have the strangest court in basketball or what? The benches are on the ends, the floor is elevated but only on the sides, the front rows are like 20 feet from the edge lines - it looks like a temporary court inside a football dome.

Usual routine JGB - vodka mixed draaanks.
To answer both parts of your disjunctive inquiry, tonight I reflected back on a thought I had some years ago, i.e., my disagreement with postmodernists.
It struck me that the basis for my disagreement is that I've never met a consistent, principled po-mo, but that if I ever did, I'd have no disagreement. But back then I'd have rejected the whole paradigm out of hand regardless of whether it was principled - nay, on the very basis of principle. What's changed? That's what I'm now thinking about.
Also nice wins for M and MSU tonight, though only one of them was at the other's expense. But I'm alright with that.
February 11th, 2012 at 10:56 PM ^
As a postmodernist, I believe you should really start thinking for yourself and learn to ignore societal pressures.

I miss logging onto a Saturday Night Open Thread and being asked about my thoughts on Keynes and Hayek.
February 11th, 2012 at 11:20 PM ^
I've stepped out onto the thin ice of modern life.
Notwithstanding that, you thought that topic was too political IIRC. Although I've arguably been just as political on this occasion.
I will say this - without board constraints we could have some healthy disagreement. Yours would be educated, based on fact and logic; mine would be prejudicial, based on sentiment, presentation and unrestrained banchee-ism.
And in this world, I'd have a fightin' chance. Unfortunately.
February 11th, 2012 at 11:24 PM ^
I did, although I pointed you in a direction where my views were espoused.
As to your second point, I think you put it well in another thread...something about making people feel good being a primary goal. You know damn well that you can hold your own with 99/100 on this board.
February 11th, 2012 at 11:39 PM ^
If by holding my own you mean able to manipulate sentiment, but helpless against reason, you're possibly right.
You did indeed point me in the direction of your views. I'll say honestly that I tend to disagree, though whatever training I have is in other areas entirely. So my opinions are not strongly held, and my disagreement is a lot less principled.

My uncle is a person I look up to entirely; he's a father figure in a complicated life. The guy has accomplished a ton is his life, and one of his "things" is wine. Shortly after I turned 21, I was at his place with megangoblue and he asked me to give an opinion on a probably pretty damn good wine; I protested that I didn't have the taste for it, and this guy with a huge wine cellar replied that anyone can get it right, that everyone can have an educated opinion as long as you pay attention and say what you know.
To make a long story short, philosophy, economics, political science, each of those have the same foundations. Take a look at what you believe and don't let someone convince you otherwise because they have a few more classes in one subject.

I buy/drink the stuff religiously, and I've also been a little under the weather for the past few days so I figure alcohol isn't the best cold medicine.
February 11th, 2012 at 10:39 PM ^
I find alcohol the best cold medicine. :D

February 11th, 2012 at 10:51 PM ^
I recommend mixing gin with tonic, Kool-Aid, and cranberry juice. Plenty of vitamins and you still get drunk. And you won't get malaria.
February 11th, 2012 at 11:01 PM ^
I got a set of those from Sur la Table last year, and I love them. I'm not a huge fan of drinks on the rocks because of the melted water, but it's interesting being able to cool down a straight-up drink. I even use them in soda sometimes.
February 11th, 2012 at 11:03 PM ^
Please let us know how you like the whiskey stones, I've been rather intrigued by them but can never pull myself to buy some.
February 11th, 2012 at 11:17 PM ^
The ones I posted below are mine and I love them, my description above might provide some further insight. These are pretty reasonably priced, IMO, although I got them as a gift.

One of the best recent purchases I've made. If I'm not at the bar, 99% of the time I'm drinking whiskey/scotch on the rocks so it's worth it. You can keep nicer vodkas like Belvedere or Russian Standard in the freezer and not have it affect the taste but you should store whiskey at room temp.

Four "Double Take Amber Ales" ... and a cigar.
February 11th, 2012 at 11:04 PM ^
Let's see. I started this evening with a Miller Lite. I don't usually drink that shit, but I have a very good friend who thought to himself this evening "which of my friends is most likely to drop everything and go to a hockey game at a moment's notice?" He chose correctly, so I got a free ticket to the Joe tonight. Good times. So there was that, and now that I'm back in I thought a Killian's would do nicely.

Double bock on draft. Chicago beer. Had a few with mexican food for dinner. Yum. Thinking Highland Park 12 year scotch as a night cap when the time comes.

Finishing up the last of some fine craft brews from Christmas. Lump of Coal Dark Holiday Stout (Ridgeway Brewing, UK). Much, much better than expected. A very good stout.
Perfect amount of hoppiness, IMO. Can't believe I held off on it until now, but am glad I did.

Anyone in, around, or coming through the Pensacola, FL area hit the Pensacola Bay Brewery. Spent a few hours there last night and the brew is hella good, especially the Dopple Bock. Best part is, it's across the street from Old Christ Church and can't sell alcohol. So you purchase a mug and get free beer tastings. Def should be on the "to do" list.

Funny enough, l almost got some myrrh at the herb shop today too. I sure hope someone is on the way with some gold. I really need to get on attaching that star to the top of my house.

on the rocks- one of those drinks that even the worst bartenders can't screw up; but I get a bit of a headache the next morning, so maybe it's back to vodka.
