Don Brown working with Michael Barrett as a Viper
According the Nick Baumgardner, "Don Brown working with Jordan Glasgow and frosh Michael Barrett behind Khaleke Hudson at viper."
Barrett's position has long been unknown and technically this doesn't mean he's necessarily the viper of the future, as position changes aren't rare for Michigan, but this is an interesting development

The submarine must have sprung a leak...
August 8th, 2018 at 12:33 PM ^
Is there any other football team that keeps its fans in the dark as much as Michigan football seems to do?
August 8th, 2018 at 12:37 PM ^
Jim has said before that there are lots of opponents who would like extra information on the team's personnel. I'll take keeping other teams in the dark if it means a few less nuggets to read in the off-season.
August 8th, 2018 at 12:44 PM ^
Other than the B1G media event, we have heard almost nothing since last season's bowl. I get not showing your hand but one or two tidbits here and there would be nice, particularly in view of what our season tickets now cost.
August 8th, 2018 at 12:47 PM ^
If successful season ticket sales can survive Dave Brandon I think they can survive coach speak from Jim Harbaugh.
Which is in a deeper submarine? The team or this board?
There's been some little bits out there, but the plummeting usability of the board has led to plummeting use and therefore plummeting usefulness.
I used to be able just to come here and find discussions on everything. Now, I have to poke around multiple sites and twitters to get my daily fix...
So since when in your mind were season ticket prices based on how much information the staff releases in the offseason?
I hate to break this to you, but how much our season tickets cost doesn't entitle us to squat as far as information goes. We'll find out when they have time to tell us. Until then, I'd like to see the coaches concentrating on preparing the team for a successful season.
Wouldn't you rather give other teams as little info as possible to improve the chances you get to watch more wins with your season tickets?
Let's be honest, you've heard some things. Mike Dwumfour is a dude in the making, and we might have a viable option at left tackle. ?
August 8th, 2018 at 12:37 PM ^
Which other teams do you follow to use as a comparison?
I mean other teams could post their gameplans & playbooks on the internet and I wouldnt know about it unless they were playing Michigan.

Have seen some Angelique and Baumgardner info on Twitter regarding UM football/Don Brown comments about Shea Patterson.

What information were you looking for? There have been interviews with coaches and stuff, but maybe you wanted more inside stuff.
Here's a nugget: Shea Patterson is the leading candidate to start.

Next two way player?
August 8th, 2018 at 12:32 PM ^
I thought it was common knowledge he was playing viper on defense?
August 8th, 2018 at 12:44 PM ^
I think viper always made sense, but there was a lot of speculation about where exactly he would be playing. I think it's interesting that if he stays at viper he could see playing time as early as next year given Hudson and Glasgow's ages
August 8th, 2018 at 12:56 PM ^
My guess is he’ll play before Glasgow.
Don't malign the Glasgow clan 'round these parts!
I like the position switch for Jordan. He'll be productive there in a limited role.
August 8th, 2018 at 12:45 PM ^
Where'd you hear that? You got a source you're keeping from us?! <tyronebiggums.gif>
Unless you are thinking of Hawkins, MB was listed as a running back on this site as recently as the roster overanalysis post.
August 8th, 2018 at 12:47 PM ^
I dont know where i heard it, but i swear i saw that was the position they planned on playing him. Or im crazy and am hearing voices lol
August 8th, 2018 at 12:52 PM ^
I think everyone here has gone a little crazy. Most boring offseason since before there was speculation on Lloyd Carr retiring.
There was a 247 article about him playing primarily linebacker last week. Maybe that's what you remember?
There was a topic posted about the article here too. Actually said Viper for Barrett and Paea at OG.

This is good info but Im glad I didn't have to click and read the Sparty smugness behind the tweet. I haven't regretted unfollowing Nick. Hopefully he gets a Spartan beat job soon so he can seem much happier with his work.
August 8th, 2018 at 12:52 PM ^
Give an example of "Sparty smugness."
August 8th, 2018 at 12:53 PM ^
I'm not diving through his content. Nice try but no clicks from me, Nick's cousin.
August 8th, 2018 at 12:56 PM ^
So you're a hater with no actual evidence other than a vague "feeling" to back up your assertion. That sounds pretty sparty to me.
*Takes glove off of hand* Dont ever throw that term at me, ass. Through your comment you just indirectly confirmed that there is a "Sparty stink" that can be on someone. Backhanded compliments when something goes right, frequent allusions to past failures, even in the tone of their writing. Although the guy might not be overly crass with his criticisms almost all the Spartans I meet have that bias ingrained in them, even the rational ones. Name a fanbase other than OSU that has less credibility than State. Add in the fact that Baum doesn't contribute anything that Brian, Ace, Magnus, or Isaiah Hole give to the Michigan blogosphere and I conclude that it's my decision where I get my info from. Piss off.
I would not state it quite as strongly but, to a point, I concur. I would say something like this:
I believe that Nick is a very weak beat writer for Michigan football. I believe he is both deceptively and deceitfully biased. While I despise beat writers who are ass-kissers of the organizations they cover I similarly dislike beat writers who "objectively" dwell on the weaknesses over and above the strengths of he team they are covering. (Example: On the Detroit sports scene you have the ass-kissing Tiger beat writes and the "totally" negative Lion writers-bad on both counts.) Nick's a covertly negative writer. You will never, and never is a strong word, find a "Nick" article on Michigan that is positive without a laundry list of qualifiers.
I see it like this: If I were the parent of a D1 football player a Jim Harbaugh coached Michigan team would be at the top of my list of places I would want him to be. Here, while I prefer that Michigan win every game and believe that JH is responsible for a couple (extra) losses, I believe that Jim Harbaugh, in the larger and more holistic sense, is likely the best college football coach in America. And if I were the beat writer I would see a part of my job to be pounding this "fact" home every day. Michigan is most fortunate to have a coach that walks the talk...win, lose or draw.

This may be one of the dumbest comments ever and while I am certainly about to regret feeding the trolls here we go.
1. Stephenrjking is one of the boards most prolific and respected posters, he engages and is even-handed calling him an ass is more a reflection on you than on him.
2. Everyone with half a brain respects what Baumgardner has brought to the Michigan beat, he is objective and does good, thorough work and as far as I can tell his only perspective on Michigan/Michigan State is that the rivalry is petty and annoying, which is pretty much on point.
If you want to rant and rave, then rant and rave but you chose really fucking stupid targets.
Why so offended by the term hater?
Just because Nick isn't a cheerleader type doesn't mean he's not a good reporter. In fact I think its a good thing to have rather then just the rah rah reporter who cannot explain what happened when things went wrong.
Nick has been serving ice cold truth since I started following him. Just because its a tough pill to swallow doesn't mean you should get bent out of shape every time he puts some information out there.
The term Sparty was what offended me.
Ever since I discovered Mgo years ago the fluff pieces from MLive are strictly supplementary. Of course every outlet will have their hot takes which all blend together after a while but when it comes to "reporting" or game recaps, it's all the same information no matter what site you're on.
So as far as my Twitter feed goes, I'll let it consist of writers who likely are further removed from rivalries like the new Oklahoma guy at the athletic, folks who likely aren't rooting against M behind the scenes.

Personally, I think Baumgardner is a good beat writer. I think his criticisms of the program are misinterpreted as him being a sparty slappy only because he went to school there - overall he seems pretty neutral.
August 8th, 2018 at 12:57 PM ^
I don’t care for the guy.
I had no idea he went to MSU until now. He's a very good beat reporter, and I never sensed any Spartyness.
He can be a little smug, that's just his personality.
I don't know why people would think Baumgardner is a good beat writer. From his Mlive days, he's made irrelevant comparisons (e.g., UM defense versus other team's defense) rather than comparing the units that will actually play against each other on the field at the same time (e.g., UM defense versus other team's offense, which is the approach taken by Mgoblog administrators' analysis). And Baumgardner tends to make basic writing errors, which became obvious when he wasn't given the luxury of having proofreaders. And he occasionally presented stuff a week later than mainstream sources but talked about it as if it were timely. What makes him "good?"
August 8th, 2018 at 12:45 PM ^
Don Brown was scheduled to talk to the media at noon today, wonder if this comes from that. Need more infos.

I still think Barrett's highest ceiling is at RB but it's a good idea to have some backups ready to step in for Khaleke in case he leaves early for the pros. It may also be indicative of how highly the staff thinks of the RBs on the roster already. We've heard good stuff about Turner, and the staff seems high on Haskins as their big back option. Barrett, with his size and speed, could be outstanding as a viper.
I too would like to see Barrett get a look at running back or perhaps some wildcat looks. I do think ultimately this is about the team needing more depth at the viper position given the lack of an obvious successor when Hudson is gone. Barrett already has the size to play the position and we know he is a superb athlete so it makes sense to at least try him out there to get him on the field.
Anyone else think Haskins may actually win RB3 or 4? Haven't heard much about Samuels this off season
I can honestly see Samuels going the Higdon route and really doing well starting his junior year. Kinda wish his redshirt wasn't burned last year. But the opportunity is there for the taking now. If he establishes himself as a good 3rd option, he's on the fast track to be 1B to Chris Evans' 1A in 2019
I don't know that people should write off Samuels yet. The offense is complicated and he was making a huge step up in competition from NM to Michigan. Jay Harbaugh said he's playing as fast as he's ever seen him, so it may just be a case of feeling more comfortable with the playbook and offense. RB is a lot about instinct but if you're overthinking everything it's easy to look bad.
Certainly not writing him off, I just listened to the Jay Harbz audio as well. Seems like RB3 competition is wide open. I doubt Tru Wilson holds onto it the entire summer, but I guess we will find out soon. Whomever wins RB3 is going to get snaps in week 1.
I don't think Jay even confirmed that Tru was the leader at RB3, just that he was in the mix.
I would concur that the competition is wide open. There was one really good question about what type of player they wanted from RB3, that is, what sort of skills might help. Jay mentioned a couple of different types of players that could emerge but said that they're basically looking for an all-around guy. My guess is that if someone emerges as either a great blocker or route-runner, they can earn some snaps, but the main thing they're looking for is the best guy to take RB2 snaps if one of Higdon or Evans gets hurt.
Of course that can confuse us outside--we could see, say, Samuels getting some snaps in places where he can run routes (hypothetically, don't know if he can) when Wilson is actually "RB3" because he's better all-around.
