DJ Durkin is returning as #Terps football coach and will be on the sidelines for Saturday's game against Michigan State, multiple sources said.

If some of the reports are true, that the president wanted to fire Durkin and the AD, but the BOR threatened him with termination if he did so, this is just the beginning of a giant shit storm (it probably is even if the reports are not true).

It sure looks like the tail is wagging the dog.

This one really tests the rooting interests.  I really dislike DD - the more that comes out from the investigation, the more I think that he should not be allowed within 100 yards of impressionable kids.

Yes, in this game, he is actually the LESS disgusting and detestable coach!

Also, can we please just call a re-do on the whole Maryland and Rutgers to the Big Ten thing.

It's a stunning sign of financial incompetence at so many universities that they willingly decide to throw away perfectly good reasons to fire coaches with cause and void their contracts. Ohio State did the same thing as Urban, even though we have increasing evidence he's going to be gone sooner than later anyway and they'll be on the hook instead of taking the chance to save all that money.

DJ Durkin will be fired. Whether the donors at Maryland who seem to have bought the board want to live in reality or not, he will be gone within a year. Their recruiting will be anemic going forward and it'll kill him, if a Missouri-style player revolt doesn't do it first. Bringing him back only to fire him later without cause is so fucking stupid for people who are in charge of a cash-strapped university that had to leave a perfectly fine conference it was a founding member of due to financial reasons it's amazing.

They abject delusion of these people is stunning.

That's the part I don't get about retaining him.  They currently have the 71st recruiting class in the country, are definitively behind at least two, if not more, teams in their own division, and now they'll have a coach that was found to promote a toxic atmosphere going into living rooms and convincing parents he won't kill their sons in the way to 7 wins.

He should have been fired immediately, but instead Maryland is just going to pay him to suck for another year or two and then fire him, probably leaving the program no better off.  Maryland has a terrible AD and has been immensely underwhelming athletically, but it's still weird seeing them making the same dumb decisions.

I went to Testudo Times to see what the Maryland fan reaction was. It was surprisingly in favor of Durkin's reinstatement. The reactions ranged from F the media and their witch hunt to I'm not sure this is the right decision, but I support it. One thing was clear they really really hate their president, Loh. Some of the reactions were along the lines of if Loh wanted him fired then it was the right decision to bring DJ back.

My personal reaction is disgust. Can we please leave the B1G? Swap with Notre Dame, Brian Kelly would fit right in the B1G East.

saw some of the "fan" comments.  Who knows WTF that is.  DJ can afford to pay for top notch PR services/reputation cleaners.

The comments supporting him fall into several categories.

1- This is typical for Div 1 FB.    Yeah not so much.

2- Durkin wasn't around that day.  - Tough, SC coach was your hire, and you are in lock step, remember?  Of course you're trying to distance yourself from him now.

3- Not all the players have spoken against DJ, some support.  Really rather irrelevant.

The supportive comments don't go anywhere near, will not ever address, the troubling and specific allegations that have been made about the culture.  So they're stuck with trying to beat the drum according to one of the three refrains above.

Wow. The stupidity and myopia of of university boards never ceases. There's absolutely no way this ends well for the school, the program, or Durkin.

I sorta understood the desire to defend Meyer by OSU fans - the guy is a hell of a coach and won you a title.  But you read the comments on Maryland stories and they are defending Durkin, a sub-.509 coach who can't field a competent defense and was a monster, like he's some god.  It's crazy.

Sheesh, a kid dies on his watch for something other than a freak medical issue and the coach gets to stay?  Not only is Maryland insane for taking my this long to make a decision, they made the wrong one.  At this point the President and coach should go.

Unsurprising.  He was clearly blameless for the player's death, and the reports of him being a bully seemed pretty overblown.  MSU should be scared this week.  I bet Maryland will give them all they can handle.

" the reports of him being a bully seemed pretty overblown "

Do you have any of those pesky facts to back up that assertion, or are you just spouting as fact your preferred reality in complete disregard for the evidence on hand?

“Our meeting with DJ Durkin was very instructive,” board chair James T. Brady said Tuesday. “His passion for the university, for the football team and for the players was absolutely impressive and very believable.”

I'm surprised he didn't use the term "forceful". A kid died due to negligence on his watch. Fire his ass.

The Maryland players should refuse to play or epically throw the next game in protest. Kneel every offesnive play. Give up a touchdown on every first down. If games are what matter, losing 350 to 0 will get their attention. Disgraceful.
