Disconcerting Signals

Submitted by Esterhaus on

Griese and another commentator remarked the Badger defensive line had appeared to hack Speight's cadence and draw our linemen offsides. I cannot recall a game where a penalty was issued for a disconcerting signals rules violation. Crowd noise might interfere with the judge's ability to hear this mimicry. I raise the issue because if disconcerting signals worked somewhat for Wisconsin I can very well see Sparty attempting the same thing in their raucous stadium if they believe no penalty will obtain. How does a team prepare for that? Perhaps the MGoStaff might put the question to Harbaugh publicly and prevent Sparty's line from scheming to interfere with our signals. Go Blue!

Yep. They had a lot of running starts at our line all game long. It was causing problems for the O-line and put them in situations where they appeared to be very slow because it is hard to block a talented pass rusher when they have a full head steam advantage on you.

I imagine Speight is mainly responsible. Probably inexperience on his part. Hopefully it gets addressed this week. Glad if we can get it out of the way and move on.

At first I was going to say you're way overestimating the power of the MGoStaff, but then I realized this here site did kinda get Dave Brandon fired, so... yeah. I do think a little old-fashioned consciousness-raising is a good place to start. And I do think it is a given that Sparty will try it. I think Narduzzi is the acknowledged master of it. Obviously he's gone from there now, but still.

I'm pretty sure it was when the punt team that was out there that they were talking about that.  Not when the offense was on the field.

The commentators were talking about it when the punt team went out. And the punt team was out because our linemen were having trouble with illegal movement. The broadcasters raised the matter, not me. I want to see that sh!te stop if it's happening because if mimicry worked Badger advantage to some degree, like forcing punts, then some other douche bags might try it (guess who I believe would go there soon enough). I've just never seen it called at the CFB level. "Fortunately" some of our line switched to holding, which my simple mind can comprehend. Peace out.

Wisconsin was also timing Speight's snap count perfectly, sending linebackers on the blitz right as Cole snapped the ball. That was frustrating to see. Can't believe the offense didn't take advantage with even one hard count.

You know what. I am fully confident that by the time we see MSU, we would have adjusted everything. Harbaugh did not forget how that game ended. Those MFers can count all they want (I doubt if they can count well). We are going to smack them around. Pure pain this year.

Heard that called for the first time ever during the UNC-Pitt game last week. The ref said "Delay of game, defense" and we were accordingly upset but he then clarified that it was disconcerting signals for mimicing the clapping.

I'm guessing your talking about the back to back false starts on the punt formation. I think the second one the d line just shifted over and that's what caused the false start. If the defense is trying to do the cadence to cause a false start they throw a flag.

their LBs knew exactly when the snap was coming and were just diving into the OL right at the snap for a number of plays. Seems like Wilton has got to recognize that and throw in a few 'hut huts!' in there to get them to jump offsides and back off a bit
