Dienhart: recent Q&A with Mattison

Submitted by PeterKlima on

Tom Dienhart at the BTN recently posted a Q&A with Mattison.  I don't like Dienhart, but I am starved for football talk.  Relevant points:

  • Defensive line are all participating and working hard this summer.  Especially Will Campbell.
  • Beyer and Bolden might have an impact.
  • The LBs need the most improvement.
  • Kovacs is Kovacs.
  • We might see more defensive audibles this year.

Nothing earth-shattering by any stretch.  But it is recent talk from our DC and it reminds me of how far we progressed last year.

How likely is it that we see Ondre Pipkins starting by Alabama? I fully expect him to be in the two deep, but I've heard a lot of conflicting things on what he'll bring to the table this year.

By the way, does anyone else think our secondary is gonna be fun as hell to watch? JT Floyd was solid and should step up as a senior. Countess is a few picks a way from being the next elite michigan CB. Thomas Gordon is a tough FS that will be all over the field and should see an improvement in his coverage. And senior Kovacs will be a playmaking machine.

The linebackers will be awesome too:

Ryan: playmaker

Morgan: Tough as nails

Demens: Tackling machine, stud in the middle.

We have talent and depth in the defensive backfield but last year was still scary at times.

I recently watched the Ohio game again.  There were some serious blown coverages in that game.  Some were expoited while Braxton Miller missed out on others.  Then there were all the double moves by Posey.....

I'm hoping another year of experience and familiarity with the system/coaches will help correct some of the problems.

mattison acknowledged after the game that he wanted to challenge Miller to throw because to that point he could not hit broad side of barn.

Posey, who was a real difference maker with his serious double moves had just had the ink dry on his suspension for tat-gate plus a few games tacked on form other tansgressions so I dont think they adequately prepared for him.

J.T. Floyd has always tried to do too much in big games at home. He got burnt by Michael Floyd a ton early in the year too. You could see him talking smack and doing his Cissoko impressions quite often. Same thing happened in the big Ohio game at the end of the year.

He's got to learn to calm down and play within himself. When he went up against Jenkins vs. Illinois, he played like a manchild...best game of his career when you consider the matchup. But that was a road game vs. a "meh" Illinois team and the offense wasn't doing jack for 3 quarters. I haven't seen him that focused...ever.

So I'd like to believe he'll be fine, but I think the moment of Alabama/Jerryworld is going to overhype him yet again. I hope I'm wrong.

Is there a writer out there that people like? Many articles posted on this board come with the "I don't like _____________... but this is an interesting article" disclaimer.

I understand those that want to hold onto the Mark Snyder grudge, but, I mean, Tom Dienhart? Has he really earned your scorn? If so, why?

... is just poorly conceived (and maybe lazy).  I don't mind a Q&A by him though.  I think you HAVE to post a disclaimer because otherwise people associate you with the author in the title.  (i.e. "He's that guy who is always reading or quoting Bill Simmons.")

The thought of Mattison having the luxury of adjusting defenses on the fly to exploit tendencies is exciting. Should make for some interesting UFR's this season.

With more defensive talent coming in this fall and guys getting a year older and having a year under Mattison belt will benefit this fall.   I think Joe Bolden will be one heck of player for us reminds me of the ohio linebackers but with the right schooL!!!
