Did anyone else hear Braylon Edwards yesterday

Submitted by ldevon1 on

I guess Braylon will be doing a weekly guest appearance on the Mike Valente show every Thursday at 5:00pm on 97.1 The Ticket in Detroit, and yesterday he was on fire with the wildest "takes" Just a few that I heard, and feel free to add if you heard him.

1. He is obviously red assed about KeKoa Crawford wering the #1. Said it's "Jim's thing" and he feels that a player should have to earn it, the way Carr made him earn it.

2. No defensive player should ever wear that number.(#1)

3. Brandon Peters should be starting: Anyone that saw the spring game, and some fall practice knows that Peters is the best QB on the team.

4. Rashan Gary needs to get in shape: He takes plays off and doesn't spend maximum effort on every play

5. Jim needs to utilize the TE's more to open things up for the WR's: They need to incorporate more crossing routes for the TE's.

6. Wilton Speight is what he is: "The so called QB guru" thinks he can make Speight into something he isn't capable of being.

Those are just a few I can remeber off of the top of my head. I've never really been a big Braylon fan, from the time he tried to Hi Jack the #1 for his own selfish purposes, to some of his comments during the RR era, but this is on another level.

1) don't agree
2) agree, but I'll let it slide as long as we are winning
3) how many practices has he seen? I too saw the spring game but I wont say that is enough that I will second guess the coaches who is the best QB for the job. OTOH I could imagine a player could get in Harbaughs dog house and slide down the depth chart despite talent.
4) could be. That was a knock on him by many posters who watched him in HS in the IMG game.
5) I actually sat there Saturday thinking the same thing. why aren't we bringing TEs and slot WRs across the middle more for easy completions, help settle down Speight. seemed like we did a little early 2nd half. they have a tendency to go downfield a lot and not make the easy shorter throw. drives me crazy on 3rd and short.
6) at this point half the board is resigned to Speight being what he is.

Go watch Peters' highlights from the spring game then watch Speight's highlights from the 2016 season and tell me if you still think Peters should be starter.

I care about Edwards' opinion almost as much as Marcus Ray's.  The guy blamed his NFL flameout on Browns fans also being Ohio State fans.  So maybe I'll start taking him seriously when Jabrill Peppers forgets how to play football.  But until that day....

Braylon Edwards called the Jamie Morris/Marcus Ray show (love Jamie but he's terrible on this show, wish he still hosted the view from the backfield show instead) a few weeks ago and the guy sounded like an idiot. I also sense a lot of jealousy from former Carr players like Braylon and Marcus when it comes to their teams and comparing them to the current era. It's like they don't want the current team to be as succesful as they were. I don't know how many times Marcus has to bring up the 1997 defense and how Harbaugh still hasn't won a conference championship.

I don't hate Braylon, but I think he's wrong. His opinions were pretty negative in general, which I was a little annoyed about. And it made me feel pretty uncomfortable the way he called out Speight. Even if this is Speight's highest level of play, I'm not sure is appropriate for someone to basically call out a kid (from your own school) and say he isn't skilled enough to do better. The way he worded it was offputting.

IMO he sounded still very butthurt about the program in general, seemingly stemming from the whole #1 thing.

He was also pretty negative about the team vs. Ohio State -- I wanted someone to call and be like...uh...Braylon....just an FYI, you went 1-3 against them.

some seriously salty turds out this morning

OP couldnt have miss represented the discussion any worse.  Yeah alot is tecchnically "hes words" you just cut out 99% of what he had to say and got all but hurt that he'd dare have anything to say that isnt peaches and cream.  He was mostly positive about the state of the team, the program and the coaching staff.

1.  No not at all, you herd what your already formed opinion wanted to hear.  He was pressed on the #1 thing by Mike right off the bat.  He wasnt salty at all.  Basically said in his mind the jersey should stand for hard work and have to be earned but this is Jims team and its not his call.

2. same as above.  i mean really who doesnt agree with this?

3.  He was talking more about if theres going to be some kind of rotation it should be Peterrs getting reps not OKorn.  He was more negative on John Okorn than everything else you highlighted put together and yet you dont even mention it.

4. Those are he's exact words and i thought he went a little far with that comment.   He was overall positive about Rashan just wants to see more .  He clearly holds him to a higher standard.

5. and?????

6. This was in relation to the discussion at #3 baically this whole thing with OKorn in his opinion is all part of Jims grander plan to get the best out of Speight.  Most of what he had to say was pretty accurate, Speight needs to play better.  He doesnt think Speights ceiling is as high as Jim does.  Also pointed out over and over again that Jims a different cat and trying to figure out motives with the qb/s is more diffucult than with other coaches like Mork or Urbz. Basically he was just dissapointed after an offseason with the qb guru and losing all the weight that he didnt see any improvements from Wilt

He also had plenty of positive things to say.  Was very high on the defense overall.  Had good things to say about Mo and Bush and is really high on Chase.  He's got a man crush on TBlack dating bacck to the spring.

I know a few people who know Braylon personally ( sound the alarm) and most of them say he's a bit of an ass with his nose in the air, but there was nothing wrong with anything he said in this segment.

On another note before he got in studio Mike made a comment about Braylon never dropping a ball in college ( LOL!!!!) then the curse of Cleveland hits and he leads the league in drops.

Rashan, at nearly 290 lbs, is nearly as fast as he was.

He doesn't own the numer 1 at UM.

And he should reflect on all the drops he had at UM while he's shutting up.

Besides the Gary speak I don't see much wrong any of the comments but honestly I haven't had time to listen to the interview yet.

Edwards is one of the best all time U of M players that we've ever had. He was awesome for us and he earned the right to voice his opinions about the program

The #1 jersey was a big deal for him and Carr really made him earn that and we all followed why he chased it (whether it was for selfish reasons or not by his last year he was a boss). Coach Harbaugh has his own way of doing things to seperate himself from the other coaches but I can see BE being salty about having to work his ass of for the honor.

All the rest seems pretty legit. Using the TE's more to open things up is a fundimental Michigan trait and even Speight supporters generally wouldn't agrue that Peters has a better arm and probably a better prospect. He's just nowhere near ready which I would definitely side on Harbaugh but Peters needs to be groomed.

There's definitely some strong opinions around here. I'd have loved to have seen this place in the early 2000's when Harbaugh wasn't speaking glowingly of Michigan athletics and the creampuff classes our players were taking..

Which no doubt coincides with when Braylon Edwards was playing!

Well damn, Braylon. He is still my all-time favorite Wolverine on the field, but those comments are pretty damning. He seems to not like Jim Harbaugh, which is crazy to me. There is no better coach for UM than Jim and that is a fact.

September 8th, 2017 at 9:35 AM ^

He doesn't like Harbaugh because Jim doesn't kiss his ass and pander to him.  Probably revolves around the whole #1 thing.  I'm sure they've talked, and I have no doubt that #1 came up.  And I have no doubt that Jim said something like 'ohh, I see what you're saying, yeah.  But I'll going to handle it how I want to, not how Lloyd handled it'.  And I have no doubt that would have salted a salty wound that Mr. Edwards has carried around since RichRod...

Are we sure Braylon wasn't drunk or still drunk from the night before?

Also, WHHHHHYYYYYYY do people still listen to Valenti?? One of my best friends who I share season tickets with and who also still lives in Detroit refuses to stop listening to Valenti. WHY? He's a complete Spartan dickbag. It's like being a liberal and watching FOXNEWS and just getting fuming pissed. Why would you do that to yourself?

Braylon is very well spoken, and has been pretty good on 97.1. I disagree with a quite a few statements, but damn guys, you act like he wasn't the best receiver we have had the past two decades by a comfortable margin (Jeremy Gallon is #2).

Just because he's not saying the best things about the team doesn't mean he's wrong. I agree with the #1 jersey. Should be earned and given to a leader. It's too early to criticize the TE routes since it's a new offense. But he's still a Michigan man, still one of the best to play for us so no need to ride him for having an opinion.

I can handle Valenti on every topic outside of college football. Especially now that Terry is gone. For the most part he is grounded, and the state of MSU has made him that way. Yeah he still puts in cheap shots but it's a rivalry and it is expected.

The problem is, his knowledge of Michigan Football is shallow at best. His disciples want Valenti's approval so bad they spout over the top anti-Michigan comments all day. His listeners are too dumb to mount a counter argument based in facts so the Michigan fanbase looks bad. And when he does have a Michigan fan co-host, it's a somehow less knowledgeable fan in Dennis Fithian, or someone like Braylon who would do or say anything in order to get a radio gig in this town.

I'd LOVE for Jon Jansen to go on the air with Valenti. At least who could provide accurate insight, reasonable takes, and shut down all the garbage that gets said on that show.

But hey, anyone know of a good Michigan football podcast? The MGoPodcast content is top notch, but I probably need 3x that much to get thru a work week!

Those are some pretty bad takes. But in entirely other news, he came off as polished and highly personable on BTN so far. And, there at least, he's had very reasonable takes.

Wow why is the majority of the board so quick to be an asshole over this? Personally I'd like the #1 to be treated as a special number on offense and #2 on defense. Many here would love to see what Peters brings to the table in game action. More TE crossing outs is a good idea and works to Speights strengths. I remember he wasn't happy his brother didn't get a scholarship here but don't remembering him being a big dick about, am I remembering that wrong? He has helped the university of Michigan far more than he has hurt it. Give the man credit for that people. You can disagree with someone without being rude.

Chill out. If you didn't listen to the interview, it's really impossible to understand how he was wording things. The OP did not hear the same interview I did, or just got too pissed off to really understand context.

1. He is obviously red assed about KeKoa Crawford wering the #1. Said it's "Jim's thing" and he feels that a player should have to earn it, the way Carr made him earn it. He was not that upset about the #1 jersey. Yeah, he said people should earn it, but he really was not that mad.

2. No defensive player should ever wear that number.(#1). Yeah, I agree with him. He wasn't demonstrative about it.

3. Brandon Peters should be starting: Anyone that saw the spring game, and some fall practice knows that Peters is the best QB on the team. Completely false. He said Speight is the best guy that they have as of now. This entire discussion was more about O'Korn vs Peters. He discussed guys of the future, but he did not even hint that Peters should take Speight's job. I have zero clue where you are getting this.

4. Rashan Gary needs to get in shape: He takes plays off and doesn't spend maximum effort on every play. I saw the exact same thing he did. Gary played well, but I don't think he was a massive impact against Florida that we all expected and needs to continue to step it up.

5. Jim needs to utilize the TE's more to open things up for the WR's: They need to incorporate more crossing routes for the TE's. Yeah? He talked about how they have a lot of TE weapons and they will help make Speight's job easier.

6. Wilton Speight is what he is: "The so called QB guru" thinks he can make Speight into something he isn't capable of being. Do you really disagree with this? Speight is who he is. He's had a year, a full season of conditioning, and he really did not look that much different. He also said that he has time to figure things out with the upcoming schedule. The entire point is that Speight can be a good QB, but he just doesn't have the ability to be great. And at this point, I can't disagree with him.

People talking about how they have lost respect for Braylon, and he's not a Michigan man?? Come the bleep on.

uncle leo

September 8th, 2017 at 9:42 AM ^

That he was double and triple teamed EVERY SINGLE PLAY? Because I find that freaking hard to believe.

The entire point was that he did not have a monumental impact in his first game against Florida (that everyone expected), and he still has some work to do before we crown him the greatest player in Michigan history.

But again, you and the OP go beyond overboard in what Braylon said.
