Dez on College Gameday

Submitted by AeonBlue on

Desmond Howard and Kirk Herbstreit just had a debate about DB on Gameday. Desmond's main points were defending DB and all the funds he raised and how he was a champion of Women's sports. He basically implied the only reason DB was forced into resignation was because of the football team's performance. Is he this out of touch with the state of affairs and the fan-base or is this just a scripted talking point from ESPN?

So we need to adapt and grow to a loosing program which btw has been atrocious for the past 8 years?? There is nothing new here, football is king at michigan and if football team does bad no stone will be left unturn until the issue gets fixed.
Can we just get an AD who just does the AD job and stays out of the spotlight

He hired a guy who would shut the fucking old guard fan base up. When Hoke was hired you all blew your loads and rejoiced.

The program has been crap since a guy not supported by the old guard was hired, and uh old guard made it a point to be an uncomfortable environment for the coach they never wanted.

They then hated Brandon because he tied to bring the department up to date and the old guard got pissed because they scream tradition.

Brandon made a political decision to hire Hoke and he should have been fired just for that reason. The decision was not motivated by wanting to make sure the program had the best coach.

I just hope this is the end of the Carr faction/loyalists having any input in the football program going forward. Carr's coaching tree is horrible and we need to stay clear from them moving forward.

Everytime I hear that "if the football team was winning..." argument. Part of me thinks "NO SHIT SHERLOCK!", the other part thinks...maybe they should give pause to why we're targeting the AD instead of the coach. Because 99% of the time with a failing football team, the coach is blamed, not the AD. Usually you fire the coach, hire a new one, and move on. The fact that the AD is getting the most attention should (in theory) be a red flag for those that perhaps it goes beyond the simple "it's only because the football team is losing" argument.

Brandon is gone. DH is a talking head. It doesn't matter what DH says from his lofty perch. A new chapter is being written. Let's hope it has a better ending than the last two RR and BH chapters.

dez is on point. If Brady Hoke succeeds so does Brandon. Everything else is BS. Nowone cares about how much money they raise or how much success womens water polo has, its all about football and the same will apply to the next AD. It always will

I like Desmond, but if he is unable to see the toxicity of DB, then he is an idiot. One cannot argue that Brandon did many good things for M athletics, but he also created much turmoil and has made Michigan a laughingstock of late.
The bottom line is that a couple of years from now Michigan football will have turned things around, the athletic department will be running smoothly, the majority of fans will be satisfied, and Desmond can look back at his comments and viewpoint and realize just how foolish he was.

How far has this blog fallen?   People in this thread are now calling out former UM players, specifically a Heisman trophy winner.  Are all the football alumni that supported DB and Hoke out of touch as well?

I wouldn't even know who Brandon was if not for the fact that my football team is the Big's bitch.  Probably a LOT of alum like me. So yeah, football had something to do with him being resigned.

He's correct that the decision is based on the failure of the football program during his tenure. Why is everyone so defensive about that? It's the same at dozens of other schools: if your biggest revenue-generating sport sucks, the AD gets fired.

DB actually deserves some kudos for his attention to non-revenue sports. I hope the next AD does the same thing. I also hope the next AD doesn't schedule Appalachian State like a moron. For me, as soon as that schedule was released, I knew DB was not the right man for the job. With college sports, any publicity is not always good publicity, and any revenue is not always good revenue.

As Brian has pointed out several times, from 1999-2009, Michigan was in the top 5 of the Director's Cup, which measures success in all sports, not just revenue sports, 10 times. Since DB came around? Once. I get that he put money into the sports, but he certainly hasn't helped them succeed more than his predecessors.

and told him not to listen to the Mgoblog fans that are calling him out for his opinion.  Hopefully, he doesn't read the trash in this thread.  I told him real fans support current and former UM players during good times and bad.

My favorite post was from the guy that said DH is out of touch and doesn't know what is going on at UM because he has a family.  Last time I checked, covering football related news was DH's job.  But hell, a bunch of dudes hiding behind a computer know more about Michigan football than a Heisman trophy winner.

As soon as anybody enjoys watching slow, boring, low scoring womens sports I guess football and mens BB will reign king. Seriously nobody gives two shit about women's sports unless a player looks hot in volleyball outfit. Want to have a successful career as an AD? Hire a great football coach.
