For Detroit Red Wing Fans: Do you fear the playoffs for 2009-2010?

Submitted by the_big_house 500th on
As of late my Red Wings have been scaring the crap out of me. Franzen is out of the lineup for four possibly five months. Bertuzzi is still the same pathetic excuse for a player like we was back when we had Legace. Datsyuk left the game last night with an upper body injury not to mention WTF we lost to the Avalanche at home? I know it's early but my optimism for a Stanley Cup return to the Finals this year is not high. For the first time in a long time as a Wings fan I don't see us favored for another Stanley Cup or Stanley Cup appearance. How the hell is Columbus doing better than us? Babcock better work some magic later on in the season and get rid of FUCKING BERTUZZI. Nobody want's that cheap shot throwing fuck. And Osgood might want to think about retiring here soon. We need younger players because this constant veteran style is slowly but surely losing it's power.

I'm not a Bertuzzi fan, but IMO he's not as bad as he was last time he was on the roster. The Wings D has been bad at times, and turnovers don't help. They really need to lock down on D in order to have playoff success. Right now it doesn't look good, but it's still early in the season - lots of hockey to go. I look forward to seeing which players are going to step up and score some goals. And hopefully we'll stay healthy from now on.

the penguins choked the first 3 months of their season last year, finished the last day of the year climbing into the 4th seed and we all know how that turned out.

I know you're probably too full of sour grapes to have remembered, but the same situation happened in round one Wings vs BJackets going in the Wings favor. Two chances to close it out and the Wings failed, don't complain about officiating when calls went in both directions that probably shouldn't have and the officiating was similar to the year before when the Wings won.

If the Wings are still around .500 in a month, then I'll be worried. It's still early. That said, I'm still a little concerned. Leino, Helm, and some of the other young guys need to turn into Datsyuk/Zetterberg-level stars pretty soon to support the top two lines. I understand the emotional dislike of Bertuzzi, but he's still big and relatively talented, and it's not like it's a big long-term deal we're committed to. If he works out, great, and if not, whatever. We don't have any more proven talent he's replacing. Osgood: we need a replacement eventually, and hopefully Howard is the guy. If he fails, maybe Larsson...point is, I'm more concerned about goaltending post-Osgood than with Osgood. I think he'll be fine this year, especially in the playoffs. Maddeningly inconsistent, maybe, but still good enough for the team to win. I could understand not winning the division, and maybe not even having home ice in the first round. But I can't believe a team with Datsyuk, Zetterberg, Franzen, Lidstrom and Osgood will miss the playoffs.

Miss the playoffs thats certain but the regular season is crucial. The Wings have had bad injuries in recent seasons like Datsyuk missing vital games last year in their playoff run. Franzen also was hurt including Hudler. Injuries seem to always haunt Detroit. Hopefully we can stay healthy because so far there's already guys down.

To paraphrase: I played hockey in high school so when I say the Red Wings are in trouble, I'm right and you're wrong, no matter what your level of hockey knowledge is. EDIT: Since your political ideology agrees with President Obama's, you are a virgin. Did I get the gist of it?

You should write another short story about sportsmanship and not making fun of Ohio State fans while they're down because we have this awful history of embarrassing losses...or some such...

I'd say only 10% of those playing competitive past high school are complete fucking tools, but that's probably because I'm playing competitive hockey with some pretty classy dudes.

fuck all of you who judge people and fuck everyone who doesn't know enough about someone to be judgemental on them Which was immediately preceded by the following judgments about MGoBoard: I'm not taking shit from a bunch of people that sit around and hump their hands all day cause they know they can't get pussy from a girl if they tried. Fuck all of you grammar nazis fuck all of you commies and obama lovers I'm going to miss you. P.S. It's "judgmental". The rest is pure gold, though.

'I actually played hockey, you didn't card' yet think 8 games into the season is a reason to be concerned about the Red Wings. How many NHL seasons have you watched? Number of times Detroit's won the Presidents Cup 6, number of times they followed that up the Stanley Cup = 2 23 Presidents Cups have been handed out, only 7 went on to win the Stanley Cup out of the nine who actually got a chance to play for the Cup. The regular season doesn't mean crap in hockey. Just make the playoffs and you have a shot.

This thread has been destroyed already but I saw a similar question on another board and someone posted this image. So I'm blatantly stealing/borrowing it from 'Shinma' over at MotownSports but it fits.

To get back on track though: Short answer, knee-jerk reaction: Yes. Long answer, rationale: No, there's a lot of hockey to be played between now and April. I'll worry only when I have to, and right now there's nothing to legitimately worry about.

amazing. No team has ever struggled out of the gate and gotten it back on track. Not in an 82 game season. ozzy's responsible for swiss cheese defense? someone said that helm/leino need to turn into datsyuk/zetterberg...you realize that Dats and Z are two of the top 10 forwards in the league, right? How many teams have 4 of the top 10 forwards in the league? Aside from the pre 1970 Montreal Canadiens who ever has?
