Detnews story about Peters and the QBs

Submitted by 1VaBlue1 on

Angelique recap'd the Inside Michigan Football show from last night.  Peters said he was knocked unconscious for "30-40 seconds" against UW.  That's not something we really didn't know, but it was never stated.  Also talked about the QB situation - from Brandon:

“I don’t really care,” Peters said. “It’s going to happen at the NFL level, the college level, you’re going to bring guys in. That’s just how things happen. You can’t really get into your emotions so much. You have to worry about what you can do and stay in the position you want to be in. So you just gotta work and can’t let anything affect you.”

She also quoted Harbaugh on the QB's:

Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh, speaking to reporters Wednesday night, described what he thinks the approach should be for all three quarterbacks, including McCaffrey.  “Like anybody in the program, he has the license and the ability to be a starter,” Harbaugh said of Patterson. “As I told all three of the quarterbacks at the same time, the only thing that’s guaranteed here is an opportunity.

Here is the story link.  It's nothing we haven't figured out for ourselves, but its nice to hear it from the direct source.

Thanks, I didn't think of some of that, and not that I agree with it all, but they are good discussion points. This board turns into one sentence hot takes sometimes and I just hate when people say stuff thats regurgitated from mlive or whatever.

See I wasn't sure about Jay coaching at first, but I've been pleasantly surprised since. I think RB blocking is a learned skill and takes awhile to figure out since it's like third or fourth on the list of stuff to learn as a RB. De'Veon wasn't good at it until Junior/Senior year, IIRC. And I thought Isaac was doing well early in the year, until he was banged up.

I think we desperately need a WR coach.

Playcalling I don't get. I think that is on Harbaugh for having a wonky set-up. That 2015 offense was clunky as heck, then 2016 they looked like geniuses. Maybe a complicated relationship takes a while to mesh together. Maybe Pep just is a large step down from Fisch. Maybe the fact we need a Pep/Fisch means Drevno is out of his element. Maybe they put a lot of stress on the players and this group couldn't handle it yet.

Personally I'd rather see an OC, and OL coach, a TE coach, a RB coach and  WR coach. But Harbaugh gets the big bucks, and I'd bet I'm looking at it too simplified.

Look, I think most fans incluidng myself want Harbaugh, and want him badly. That doesn't mean that he is without flaw. Michigan has an uphill battle each BIG season. We need to play against MSU+ref, OSU+ref, IOWA+ref (occasionally). We do not have as good as recruiting classes against OSU year in and out . We need every ounce of good coaching and player development. Michigan has very little margin to overcome the referees and away game environment to beat OSU or MSU.The players are working so hard, they deserve better coaching. I can see the trending-up on defense, but I don't see it in offense yet.

Some fans can claim the youth this year. I was in the same boat. Many of the issues are due to youth, but many others are not. Let me ask you from another perspective. Do you think our RB's pass blocking will be better next season? I don't know at this point. Do you think our OL will be better than this year, after two senior starters are gone? I don't know. Do you think the WR group will improve? probably, wait, what about Crawford and McDoom's development last off season? The offensive coaching staff just didn't give me enough confidence.

RB pass blocking, idk. Hopefully. I think it's hard to judge one year of coaching, and I say that because I don't remember Wheatley coming in and immediately getting our RBs better at blocking.

OL is taking a step back next season. Overall the tackles are going to be worse. The interior 3 guys seem promising, but a true sophomore center worries me from a line calls aspect. Missed stunts were a problem for us with a 5th year senior calling them last season. I also think Bredeson showed us his ceiling isn't as high as we had hoped. I think that falls squarely on the coaching staff. While visable improvement in the run game took place this season, the pass protection was still behind. Mostly this is on Drevno (recruiting and coaching), but I think Harbaugh is to blame too. When you have two OL coaches, you don't have one, and one of our OL coaches also has to prep for games each week as a OC. And why the hell weren't we prioritizing the tackle position immediately upon arrival.

WRs I do believe are going to be better. I thought DPJ did get better throughout the year. Black would have if he was given the opportunity. Collins getting more involved, adding Oliver Martin to the mix makes that group better. Perry is good but needs to outside guys to take the focus off him. This group does need a dedicated coach. If Pep is that coach with a fancy title, he didn't do a wonderful job this year. The biggest thing for the WRs is that they will have a QB that can hit them in the hands when they are open instead of eating sacks.

I honestly think the thing we Michigan fans are over looking the most is the sheer importance of experience at WR that was lost to the NFL last season. Chesson, Darboh, and Jake Butt made Speight look pretty good. That loss of experience can't be over stated. The OL is what it is as well. But the production in the pass game, as well as blocking down field that was lost to the NFL was a real blow.

Check out Shane Beamer, hired by his dad to be RB and AHC at VA Tech, and hired by Kirby Smart to be TE/Special teams coordinator for Georgia.  Kirby Smart, like Saban, hires great coaches who are also great recruiters.  Apparently Jay is a very good recruiter.  We lost two of our best/better recruiters when we lost Wheatley and Fisch last offseason.  I really do not think Jay is the problem on the staff (although a move back to TE responsibilities may make the most sense).

but what more would you have the coaches do? Look back at Seth's write up on the OSU game. The coaches put us in a position to win. Player didn't execute. As much as JMFH would love to get out there and wip the ball around, he ain't the QB. Coaches coach. Players play. Everyone's accountable.

Most fans didn't expect them to beat OSU with Okorn. The coach had a good game plan, but that's expected at least from me, based on my observation in the last two years. Harbaugh and co. save many offensive plays for OSU game. In fact, defensively, in the 1st and 3rd quarter, I saw the hardest hits in the entire season, and that's what I has been hoping our team to be for rivalry game. It didn't last long enough though. I'v seen enough OSU game, they are still more talent and stronger than us. Whenever it's deadlock in first half, in 3rd quarter, they can simply run their QB left, run QB right, run RB left and right, they can get a TD with a running drive. The did the same with Wisconsin, and Neither Michigan nor Wisconsin has enough defense or strength to counter that.

In stead of OSU game, why don't you bring up MSU game and ask the same question again? did they put the players in a position to succeed?

MSU was stacking the box with 8 and 9 man looks. We could not run the ball against that front. I'm not saying that passing so much was optimal, but as far as I know there are only two methods of progressing the ball forward. When one door is closed, there's only one other option.

I was not happy with the outcome of that game either, but sometimes shit happens.

Here's something to think about: which Spanish "Golden Age" painter was better (in any way you choose to think about it): Ribera or Velazquez? Which was more like Brandon Peters? Which was more like Shea Patterson? Is either one of them at all like McCaffrey?

He is just scratching the surface and I feel is far ahead of Shea. In any scenario Michigan should be all set with QB play from here on out. I like our chances for next season.

I don't know that Peters is ahead of Shea. Just from watching on my couch I can see that Shea looks to have far better pocket awareness and is less likely to get injured with his elusivness. The guys that cant see a guy out of the corner of their eye or sense the pressure get planted into the turf and don't last on the field. Wisconsin game anyone? Ive seen it over and over agan. BP isn't the guy who is going to brace or duck out of the way of a hit. He looks like a talented slinger who stands there and watches the ball in the air and keeps watching the receiver down the field. Mean-while that defender who was four feet away at the time Peters was winding up and at his top speed, was licking his chops while BP stood there like a loose statue about ready to crumble. I don't see this so much from Shea. It's always and finally in the big games against the good defenses when guys like BP get knocked out and it ends the season for a team or game because the backup is unprepared usually. Just what I've witnessed over the years. If Peters continues to be the guy who cant sense or see the pressure, Shea or McCaffrey will end up being in the game anyway. Roll the dice boys!!

situation.  It will be a stiff competition.  Like Peters stated mindset too as it speaks well about his maturity.  Thanks for posting.  By all accounts, we should have good play at the qb position next year.  Pretty exciting imho.

The first time I saw BP take the field, the fact that he doesn't wear a mouthpiece immediately jumped out at me. I even commented to my 13 year old who plays football (dad knows best moment) that he'll never make it through an entire season without a concussion if he doesn't put one in...he lasted 3 games

I don't necessarily appreciate the negs but I will provide enough Sailor Jerry for everyone to come over and rewatch the games with me on my DVR to prove me wrong. I'm certainly not taking digs at the guy. I'd love nothing more than to see him succeed and have a long and healthy career.

Damnit! I specifically remember seeing him put one in his face mask between plays. I remember thinking “he better hurry. The clock is running down. Now I have to spend the rest of my morning looking. Does that count as billable hours?

"Previous studies have theorized that mouthguards can reduce concussion risk, however, because they help absorb shock, stabilize the head and neck, and limit movement caused by a direct hit to the jaw. Mouthguard thickness also has been shown to be a factor that contributes to the level of protection."

This is going to be a great battle this spring and fall. BP has a huge leg up in the playbook though and that will be tough to overcome. SP is going to have to digest what is a complicated system very quickly. Patterson brings a dual threat element while Peters will open up the playbook more. I can't wait until April.

But I don't care much who wins the starter job. What I'm excited about is that for the first time in years and years, the inevitable injury to said starter shouldn't derail the season.

How many promising seasons in the last 10 years have been screwed up by the starting QB missing significant time? For the first time in a long time I'm not remotely concerned about that going into 2018 and that's exciting.
