Det News Blue Chip players talk recruiting
This is the Detroit News annual piece with interviews of its top fifteen players. Mostly bland responses, but I found a couple somewhat interesting:

but there is really a different culture at OSU and UM. It "feels" different on the campuses. Facilities aside, the vibe you get from the people, the attitude around campus...feels at home. COmpare it to a company like Deloitte or ESPN that overwork and underpay their staff, because your reward is having worked for them...opposed to tech companies that have every benefit imaginable. It comes down to preference...which is probably the most diplomatic way of putting it.

Why do I get the feeling that "I didn't fit at Michigan" or "I felt School B was a better fit for me" means "No golden handshakes" or "I don't want to work that hard in the classroom?"

just moved to Michigan a few years ago.

That was the kid that issued a press release announcing his announcement date. I can see why it wasn't a good fit at Michigan.

up in Columbus until he was 10 or 11, and was always a Buckeye fan. That being the case, does it really matter if he's right next door in Plymouth?

This isn't remarkably similar, but back in HS I was awarded all-area in XC from one of the local newspapers, and I had to come down and get my picture taken and write up a little blurb and answer some questions. That was done like a month after the season finished, but it wasn't published until a month or so later. So sometimes these get sent out weeks in advance, they then get revised and edited for clarity and whathaveyou, and then they are published. So chances some of these answers are pretty stale.

plus he said he didn't like the culture. kid is being honest. huge difference.

You can be honest without the digs. He commented on Coach Carr too. Ironic, all these student atheletes took the high road except one. The buckeye.

Ironic, don't you think? A little too...ironic.

How do people still not know that not having true examples of irony in the song "Ironic" is the point of the song?

Some insider information on Onwenu (from Scout)
-Was upset by that previous article (the one with the misleading headline)
-No longer doing interviews (*possibly as a result of that article*) His Coach says he is 100% Michigan.
-All the insiders say Michigan
*my opinion

“How sometimes fans of different colleges are talking about you on websites. I googled my name once and hate threads came up, bashing me with racial slurs.” - Onwenu's reply for worst experience
I can't imagine being a sought after student-athlete and going to various blogs - this one included - and reading what people have to say, especially when you know at a given point that it didn't go the way of that fanbase. Sadly, every fanbase has a group of people that seem to take these decisions personally and react childishly, and ours is no exception.

for over 5 or 6 years now. I have not seen one racial slur on this site, not one. I have read hundreds of posts and yes there is the occasional troll (like "Road kill" who was just outed the other day as a OSU fan) but you just don't see anything like racial slurs, that calls for the neg bombs to fall. You say they get taken down ok but 5 years and almost 2000 posts I cannot say "they get thrown around here", that seems like quite a reach to me. If you say stupid shit on this site it does not take long to get negged to oblivion. I personally don't neg people if I disagree with your post you're going to hear why from me.

I also haven't seen any, and I'm on here way too much.

rate the bad language, hate of Saban and Meyer, crtisism of kids will all dissapate and we can go back to just being arrogant!!!!
February 1st, 2016 at 11:22 AM ^
I've never seen the n-word here, but there have been a few comments with references or language that was specifically intended to be derogatory to black athletes. Fortunately that stuff gets dumped by the mods very quickly. I agree it's not remotely anything close to common or frequent.
February 1st, 2016 at 12:35 PM ^
Yeah, you get a couple dog whistle-type comments, but usually those are removed with the quickness. It can get petty around here like elsewhere, but the mods do a good job of actually cleaning up the place as opposed to other places (looking at you RCMB).

I think it is lazy journalism to ask a kid why he didnt' commit to achool that didn't even offer.

I don't think it's necessarily laziness. Sometimes there's a desire to get some more information there.
For example, you could have looked up Joshua Jackson on the recruiting sites, and AFAIK, you wouldn't have seen an offer listed anywhere. This is the first time I've seen that he was offered by Michigan.
February 1st, 2016 at 8:08 AM ^
While that may be, it is certainly not necessary to write it up and publish it that way.
February 1st, 2016 at 8:25 AM ^
I'm very skeptical. Aren't recruits the primary source for the offer lists? We would have been easily his highest profile offer, but EMU gets listed.
February 1st, 2016 at 8:32 AM ^
I had heard that Michigan was in contact with Jackson under Coach Harbaugh. However, I can imagine that there might be some hard feelings there, since Harbaugh basically fired Fred Jackson. Perhaps he never reported the offer because he was bitter toward Michigan.
February 1st, 2016 at 9:37 AM ^
It is consistent. That is to say, I believe each and every one of the top 15 is asked why they didn't commit to either UM or MSU, or both if they're going somewhere else. Of course, not all are offered by the two schools. But the newspaper readership cares more about the answer to "why not my school" than anything else. And I'm pretty sure that a huge majority of readers fall either into the Michigan or the Michigan State camps.
February 1st, 2016 at 10:07 AM ^
The News has been using this format for years. It isn't intended to delve into the reasons why a player did or did not pick a particular school. It is simply a profile piece on the State's best players and their individual recruiting experiences. Those are all relevant questions.
February 1st, 2016 at 7:25 AM ^
247 composite ranking has Michael Onwenu as the best player in Michigan.
So naturally the local media has him as the 5th best player.
The local media is a joke.

February 1st, 2016 at 7:51 AM ^
Will there be an article on how he has misled the media?
February 1st, 2016 at 8:27 AM ^
Harbaugh when Onwenu came visiting because suddenly he was troubled by the way Rashad Weaver and dare I say it Swenson debacle. I understand this article may have been wrote a while ago and he may have actually talked to Harbaugh about his side of the story. With that being said remember he said he was still considering Staee when he spoke of Harbaughs tactics. Then Dantoni in a desperate move puts up on some website "the righteous shall prevail" but was immediately taken down according to Wojo. REALLY here we go again another deniable slam wink wink against Michigan and then say hey they called us little brother. Another commited recruit of theirs says "We win B1G championships" oh really what happen to "we are selling results not hopes", just to provide a couple. So Dantoni type negative recruiting is alive and well with their plausible deniability leading the way.
