Det News Article on Rumeal Robinson Swindle

Submitted by Shalom Lansky on
The details of this have been leaking for awhile, this piece does a good job of covering the ordeal from his (adopted) mother's perspective: http://www.detnews.com/article/20091014/SPORTS0201/910140334/1131/sport… I'm not sure I can ever wear my '89 throwback ever again. Anyone else remember pretending to be Rumeal in their backyard shooting those free throws against Seton Hall?

he might be the worst person in the world, it's very disappointing. It's hard to imagine there's a good explanation for any of this. His own mother!

Count me out of the Rumeal Robinson Lynch Mob. At worst, Robinson might have been criminally naive, but I don't believe for a second that he "swindled his mom out of her house," and won't until I see facts that prove it.

I'm going with Tater here. Lots of people have attempted to do big things in real estate without knowing what they are doing, getting bad advice, etc, and resulting in a spectacular crash. I've seen many less high-profile people lose it all this way. I'd call this stupidity, not evil intent. Dudes gonna have to get a job though.

Furthermore, this is just the type of story that 'journalists' love, and they certainly will paint the guy in as bad of light as they can, to get us all to read it. "Rumeal makes stupid stupid moves in real estate and loses it all" is less interesting to a lot of people.

I read the original article in the hometown newspaper and there was a loooong ongoing battle in the comments section stating that the adoptive mother wasn't nearly the innocent, saintly person that she portrays herself as on a regular basis to the media and the public. Several posters came on to detail their experiences with her as schoolchildren where this woman singled them out and made them miserable by picking on them and mentally abusing them given her position at the school. Several people also posted that she wasn't all that nice to the children she adopted and only did so for the $$ income she gained in aid. I'm saddened by the story all-around and it doesn't sound like a happy tale no matter how you slice it, but let's not crucify Rumeal without getting the full story. IF (and that is a big if), this woman is as adept at manipulating public/media attention as some posters claimed, then this could be a lot of hot air in an attempt to hold onto her house. Most likely, as always, the truth lies somewhere in the middle. Probably Rumeal did use the house as collateral, but perhaps the mother was more informed about the risks and potential downsides than she is letting on. We don't really know. Let's just hope Rumeal can get out of the hole he is in and get back on track.

but his mother adopted him off the street and raised him as her own. His own siblings have also spoken out against him. I don't know for a fact that the sun will come up tomorrow, but it's very likely. His problems aren't just the result of one bad real estate deal.
