Deshawn Sims in Vegas?

Submitted by CaliUMfan on

After a couple of solid games in the Orlando summer league for the Boston Celtics, Sims didnt play today (last day of orlando league) due to coach's decision. The summer league website showed him playing 5 minutes for Dallas in the Vegas summer league today though. Can anyone explain this? Did he get cut and resign with the mav's? do they sometimes send players to play for other teams in the other summer league?

He is the link showing he didnt play due to coaches decision for the Celtics today

Summer league teams are not made up solely of players under contract to the sponsoring team. I believe that some teams just need spare bodies for their summer league rosters because they don't have enough rookies and young players to fill up an entire summer league roster.  I bet Sims is just taking up a spot on Dallas' roster.

This article from ESPN Boston suggests that he's still with the Celtics.

Sims and a number of other players left the last day of the Orlando Summer league to join a different team in Las Vegas.  Boston only had 7 guys available today and the announcers kept joking that some of the guys in polo shirts were going to have to suit up because of all of the empty seats on the bench.  If Sims was there, he would have played quite a bit.  Since he just joined the Mavs today and didn't get to practice much, I was surprised he even got 5 minutes.

This is very common.  The rosters were pretty light on all of the squads in Orlando today.  Teams don't hold it against a player so Sims could get a call back for Boston.  Harangody locked up a spot though so I don't know if there is an opening for Sims.  He may have a better shot with the Mavs.

Unfortunately, I think he will end up in Europe.  I watched all of the Boston games in Orlando and he did OK but I think he is going to have to make the transition to SF to get in the NBA.  He may be able to do it but I don't think he's going to get a roster spot until he proves he can play on the wing.  He looked small around the basket when fighting with the other PF and Centers.  Pretty much every team had some random 7 footer I've never heard of at Center and some serious bulk and size at PF.  I was surprised at how well Harangody did for his lack of height.  He looked a lot thicker than Sims and was effective down low and from 3.

Sims can make a good living as a 4 in Europe or he can probably play the 3 in D league for crappy money and see if he can make it into the league that way.  Hope I'm wrong, but that's my guess from watching the games this week.

The fact that he played with Boston in Orlando doesn't mean he's under contract with Boston, just that he's under contract for the summer league games in Orlando. He also signed a contract to play with the Mavs in Vegas, so he left Orlando early to join the Mavs. The Vegas summer league is known as the "better" of the two leagues, so some players, like Manny, rest up and only play in the Vegas one. Peedi as well as some other players, who are trying to get as much exposure as possible, play in both. However, doing so is very tiring as Peedi is going to end up playing something like10 games in 12 days. He played quite well for a third straight day though. Finished with 12 pts in 18 minutes.

The Miami Heat are going to be out signing a bunch of league-minimum players.  Will be interesting to see if Sims or Harris has a shot at landing there.

don't really fit what the Heat are going to be looking for in the rest of their players. They need big bodies that can defend and rebound and guys that can knock down outside shots. Sims and Harris don't really fit in with what the Heat are looking for now. Maybe Harris gets a shot as someone who can come off the bench and provide some points.

...I could definitely see Sims fitting in with Boston. Danny Ainge has had excellent success picking up undersized forwards out of college with guys like Ryan Gomes, Leon Powe, Big Baby Davis, most likely Luke Harangody, and hopefully Sims.
