The decisive 4th down shot?

Submitted by hazardc on

Haven't seen one this straight-on as of yet.

My biggest reason for thinking it was short is because when I saw it live I lost my shit jumping up and down yelling he's short he's short! My biggest reason for hating the fucking refs is they run over and immediately say first down.

The UM defender immediately shoved him back upon contact. In this photo his arm has yet to extend, so this was the initial contact. Incompetence or outright cheating by a crew populated by multiple professed OSU fans. Take your pick.

I mean, I get that people are pissed, but this was really fucking close. People on either side that say definitively either way are insane. Add an official making the call in real time then a review team that rarely ever "undermines" officials on the field and no way would have in that situation and I don't see it. The PIs were absolute horseshit. Buck fans keep saying both teams corners were holding all game. Well UMs got called for penalties on big plays and OSUs didn't. This to me is bigger than a questionable spot.

When the ball is placed in OT or for a touchback, is the middle of the ball placed on the 25, or the nose of the ball?  Either way, I think it is definitely short based on this pic.

There was no way in hell they were reversing that call in Columbus. It's obvious he was short. Other than the ref being an OSU fan they were prolly worried about their safety.

If both sides are able to provide angles, and pictures that support their argument... Then the call is disputable both ways, and without indisputable evidence either way the play must stand as call. If this play was reversed, and the refs called it a first down for Michigan and let the call stand, we would be using the exact same angles as Ohio State fans right now.

Instead, the defense should have tackled Curtis Samuel as he scrambled for what seemed like 5 hours in the backfield on the previous play.

I've seen several pics from straight above that all these osu fans were posting, not sure where it came from but didn't look real at all or accurate. The biggest thing that bothered me on this 4th down play was that Delano hill, instead of wrapping up and tackling Barret he dropped his shoulder into him and Barret surged forward... Go figure a basic tackle would have stopped him cold

If this pic was snapped at Barrett's most forward/advanced portion of his forward progress, we have cracked the conspiracy. He was back, and to the left...back, and to the left of the 15 yard line.

So what is the exact rule here? Is he down when

1) his hand touches the ground

2) his hand touches the ground and a defender is touching him

3) forward progress is deemed to have stopped

3) the whistle blows

4) forward progress is stopped AND the whistle blows

5) something else

Please clarify.
