I've heard this is true as well. He was brought in with no expectation of him ever being at the top of the depth chart. At most, he was expected to be a mop-up guy or perhaps a starter late in his career. The coaches never expected him to challenge for playing time early in his career. With Loeffler's track record of developing quarterbacks, who knows? It could have turned out well.

Probably wasn't that big of a gamble at the time with Henne, Forcier (I), Mallett, oh yeah and Loeffler. That is until 2007-08 when the qb corp just evaporated. I never gave it that much thought until he got beat out by Threetidan. Then I was just like "why the hell is this guy here burning a scholarship?". Got to hand it to his loyalty, though. No animosity towards him, but still, why...

He's been a team player, hasn't complained, and is well liked even though he looks like the kid banjo player from "Deliverance". While it sucks he's not even an after thought about getting playing time he's a Michigan man if there ever was one.

I would imagine he is on scholarship for his loyalty. It's not like they don't have a few extras right now, anyway. I'm sure if he was "in the way" and his scholly was needed, his scholly would disappear.

There are loads of people who are on scholarships who never contribute on the field. David Cone is one of many. Michigan isn't in the practice of revoking scholarships to non-contributors. They may not offer a 5th year on scholly, but that's a different story.
