It was in the "Tressel the Tragic Hero" post, but I think it's good we have a thread devoted to Dantonio making an ass of himself. He didn't have to answer the statements made, and he probably shouldn't have considering he didn't even know who Bradstatter was. But instead of the logical route, he took a shot at someone he didn't even know, making some very innaccurate and idiotic statements. Then again, what more would you expect from a guy like him?

the MSU fanbase has a real inferiority complex and a chip on their shoulder which this D-bag personifies perfectly.  Couple that with the fact that the guy can coach a little, and has had success against us in particular and there are probably few coaches that they would rather have.

tressel arguably cost MSU a rose bowl by playing ineligible players
MSU fans hate OSU for doing this
Dantonio defends tressel
Brandstatter calls out such a defense
MSU fans rise to defend Dantonio, lambast Brandstatter

you can't make this shit up. they literally care more about people who beat UM than their own team. the fact those points have intersected the past 3 years has made a perfect storm of douchebaggery in E Lansing.

i don't often go overboard with my criticisms of MSU or the fanbase but the fact they're 98% behind Dantonio in his defense of Tressel is a fucking joke.

July 30th, 2011 at 2:07 PM ^

and they literally don't get it. they think Brandstatter made the comment because he's afraid of Dantonio and not, i dunno, that their coach is fucking BIZARRE and would rather pat Tressel on the back for being a good guy than, i dunno, move on and focus on himself. now he's part of the Tressel circus and people are focusing on how ridiculous his comment was and not, you know, HIS TEAM

Since we're on the subject of gignaticized DBs, can someone with enough points please start a hate thread for Mike Valenti?  On the air right now yapping about Brady Hoke and how it's all talk and how no one's scared...which must be why he just led off his program talking about it for 10 minutes.  Hate this douche with the passion of a thousand burning suns.

Isn't stupid.  He is a world class a-hole, but not stupid.  He knows what will happen over the course of the next few hours.  Angry Michigan fan will call, he will interrupt and subsequently hang up on them, all the while being the twatwaffle that he is.  And people will listen, which is the whole point.  Oh, and Dantonio is a smug, hypocritical dickhead.

July 29th, 2011 at 3:02 PM ^

I generally respect his opinions, even when he bags on Detroit teams that I am a fan of, mainly because they are often true. With UM/MSU though, he is the perfect embodiment of the slappy MSU fan with an inferiority complex. He spends his whole show taking a dump on Michigan, but won't dare talk about MSU. He does realize they also had a presser, right? Like someone earlier said, MSU fans would rather root against Michigan than root for their own team. What Dantonio said is way more worthy of criticism and discussion than Hoke simply talking about how he is confident in his team. [rant closed].

It is worth calling Dantonio an assclown as often as possible. He doesn't actually respond to the point that Jim made, deciding instead to make fun of his character. This is on par with Dantonio making fun of Mike Hart after hearing of his comments... but less funny.

July 29th, 2011 at 3:32 PM ^

was just being tough when he made fun of Mike Hart.  Also when he tried to make fun of Jim.  Also when he maintains a frown on his face through each and every interview.  Dantonio is just a tough guy I think.  That's what makes his zero-tolerance policy so frightening, and tough.

I'm not trying to defend Dantonio, but the true literary definition of a tragic hero (one who is destroyed by some flaw) actually fits Tressel.  To have Brandstatter use the term "heroic" the way he did doesn't apply to Dantonio's comments.

July 29th, 2011 at 2:32 PM ^

From my high school English class, a tragic hero is only a tragic hero if their flaw is a character flaw that the masses can understand and excuse. Unless Tressel's flaw is a mental disorder that compulses him to lie and cheat, Tressel has nothing on Romeo, Hamlet, or Brutus.

July 29th, 2011 at 3:58 PM ^

The flaw is often hubris (*cough* Tressel *cough*), and the only reason tragic heroes are pitied (not so much excused, but pitied) is because typically their punishment (usually death) outweighs the scope of their original error.

But Dantonio also uses tragic hero inapproriately, based on his follow up comments - he seems to be meaning "Tressel is a hero who something tragic happened to" rather than "Tressel is a tragic hero". So it's fair to bash him for that, and Brandstatter's comments are directed against Dantonio's meaning.

Agreed (actually it should have been worse, i.e. fired not retired). Pryor probably fits the "tragic hero" mold better, particularly if his attempt at an NFL career flames out. I base this on him being vilified in Ohio and his crimes (that we know about) being somewhat less morally questionable (I consider a player breaking a dumb rule less bad than a coach lying to the sport's governing body).

July 29th, 2011 at 4:08 PM ^

That isn't exactly the definition of a tragic hero either. Most people are destroyed by some flaw. It usually tends to indicate a good/heroic/noble character who cannot escape the grasp of fate due to a certain tragic flaw. Antigone, for example, dies due to her pride and dedication to her family. I think it was Aristotle that said a tragedy invokes pity and fear: pity for the character felled by fate and fear that it might happen to you.

Also, Dantonio has no clue what he is talking about and is no where close to understanding what a tragic hero is. At the end of the article he mentions something along the lines that a tragic hero rises and overcomes his/her troubles. He basically contradicts the entire notion of a tragic hero. Tressel is just an idiot. He is the type of person that scares me: their stubborn refusal to embrace logic and investigate truth outside of their preconceived perspectives and prejudices. MSU was the "Big Ten Champion" last year, yet they split the crown because of TSIO's cheating sending them to a lower tier bowl, where unfortunately for them, they got obliterated by Alabama.

That so many people far and wide refer to Dantonio as a D-Bag.  He's a textbook definition of the term, except for the not being young, thinking he's a player, or well, smiling.  Ever..

July 29th, 2011 at 2:28 PM ^

I think people may be misunderstanding Dantonio's comments.  I believe he was merely wanting to show that he has the "right stuff" for TSIO.

On the subject of Tressel:  Ignore the rules violations/cover-up, focus on Tressel's wins

On the subject of Brandstatter:  Pretend that you don't even know who Brandstatter is, while simultaneously stating that this unknown person cannot possibly have had any "real meaningful relationships" with college players.

You see?  Dantonio can look past Tressel's ignominious end at TSIO and focus on Tressel's wins.  Perhaps Dantonio can relate to that "real meaningful relationship" that Tressel had with Pryor.  Perhaps, but just perhaps, Dantonio has the right stuff for TSIO.

To me, it’s tragic. He becomes a tragic hero in my respect, in my view. Usually, tragic heroes have the ability to rise above it all in the end, and that’s what I’ll look for in the end.”

Hey Dantonio: Um, no.  Tragic heroes get completely crushed and are left to wallow in misery.

Go to college.

If we had a coach that was "close" with Jim Tressel, I would never trust him as our coach unless he straight up denounced him like Bo re: Woody. That's just unsettling. I have some sparty friends who hate ohio state, I wonder if they know their coach is bff's with Tressel
