Coach Carr Camp

June 15th, 2015 at 11:38 PM ^

Ok, he never actually used the word hate, but he does say "I'm not into it. I like kids coming to our campus for camps. I'd rather them come here and see us. Because they get to see campus, they get to see our facilities, they get to see all of this stuff. And our players are working sometimes out while they're here. They see our guys in the weight room and just see everything. I'm a bigger fan of that."
This makes no sense. So it's ok to put on a recruiting charade disguised as a camp so long as it's on your campus? Somehow it's more genuine to teach kids football in world class facilities they will never use rather than teach them on high school fields around the country?

says it shouldn't be about recruiting, but to be about teaching football. Then explains his "campus tour", seeing "his facilities" and "meeting their current players" is the best way to teach football.

He basically says that the camps are to teach and spread the game but not away from his campus where he can recruit as well. Even if the Michigan Coaches set this up to circumvent the existing NCAA rules, high school kids still benefitted. Some of them may not have come to Michigan for a visit. Some of whom got to show their skills for mid-majors or smaller schools who may not have known about them otherwise.

I think the high school kids definitely benefitted from Harbaugh's summer tour.

Harbaugh loves it and lives it. His peers don't want to interrupt their leisurely late spring and summer. Fuck them. Hope they enjoy dealing with the most enthusiastic head coach in all of football. It's funny. Some jack asses told us to beware of his intensity. I think UM might be the only institution on earth that strongly embraces maniacs, eccentrics, free thinkers, idealists, and unrelenting athletes like our coach. I love Harbaugh. Loved him since '84. Followed his coaching career since USD. Prayed he would come here. Always knew he was the perfect fit. Let him do his thing with 2/3 star guys. Those are character guys with upside. Leaders! Trust in our Harbaugh. He clearly trusts in us.

For what its worth, all college coaches work really hard. I know a few guys who coached at smaller school (and some at Michigan) and they invariably put in insane hours...

I know it wasn't your main point - and I agree with what you're getting at - but I don't think their objection is related to having to work hard, its related to the recruiting advantages they enjoy.

The coaches who don't want to work that hard are bitching while the ones who realize that Harbaugh kicked everyone's ass this summer are already making plans to have their own camps next year.

Because Starkville is 10 minutes from everywhere and it is a place that everyone would naturally visit in the course of visits, recruiting and the like. They really don't want to acknowledge the networking potential of the camps in the SEC, do they? I mean, there was a reason that other schools were invited (and other schools have indeed showed up to make their own evaluations at some of them) and it was to have the opportunity to build relationships with prospective student-athletes. Again, the SEC dug this hole for themselves and somehow they still seem to believe that the solution is that everyone should get in the whole with them.

"I'd imagine if Jim Harbaugh is going to have a camp, he'd want to coach the young kids in Michigan how to be better football players," the Mississippi State coach said. "These satellite camps, they're recruiting camps. Obviously, it's a recruiting thing and a recruiting fair that they're doing it for."

I'm sorry but all "camps," regardless of location, are nothing more than a glorified recruiting tool.

Yep. If the coaches' main concern was teaching skill, the camps would last a week or more because there's only so much you can teach in 1-3 days. And while these camps aren't going to have incredibly long term effects in terms of skill, Mullen is asinine if he doesn't think Harbaugh and Co aren't coaching their asses off when they're with these kids.

The SEC coaches will sound like idiots and hypocrites soon .

The NCAA will not ban the camps just because the SEC wants them to .

Soon the SEC will start allowing them.

Then the coaches who poo pooed them and said how unfair they are will do a 180 and start having them. Then I hope all of their comments and quotes will be thrown in their faces . Then what bullshit will you spout Coach Saban?

You dont like them, tough . Shut your mouth and let this play out .

So Harbaugh is allowed to have only satellite camps or only camps in Michigan?

Seriously, Mullen is saying this stuff as Harbaugh is in the middle of the SMSB and Exposure U camps right here in Michigan.
