Dan Enos: smart or slimy?

Submitted by philidor's legacy on

Dan Enos was officially hired as Alabama QB coach. I don't know Mr. Enos. Never met him. He might be an upstanding guy. But something doesn't smell right. His contract at Arkansas had a no-compete clause with other SEC schools + a large buyout. So after 17 days in Ann Arbor as WR coach, he jumps to Tuscaloosa. This short term move cleared the way for him to avoid a buyout agreement he had with Arkansas and void the non-compete clause regarding joing another SEC staff. Maybe he and Mr. Harbaugh are great personal friends and Jim did him a favor? Does not seem logical. The move seems slimy. Thoughts?

Pretty sure it was proven that he didn’t have to go to a non-SEC school to cancel the non compete clause, as it was in fact void after he got canned at Arkansas. Probably just saw Bama as a better opportunity. With this being said however, he is still slimy because he’s a sparty.

QBs know the WR position pretty well, due to the amount of time they spend together in practice and the general coordination that is necessary between them.

I think this is why you see a bunch of college QBs able to transition to WR in the NFL (Braxton Miller, Terrell Pryor, Julian Edelman, etc.)

Not thread worthy, but need to vent. Vacationing in the keys with the family and decided to go to Key West today. There was only one cruise ship docked there and it just so happened to be the Ohio State Cruise for cancer cure. While I can definitely get behind that cause, it was so painful to see every other person there dressed in buckeye gear and kind of put a damper on the day. Ok I feel better now!

I'm not inclined to say someone is either smart or slimy without knowing him personally. Unless he's Bill Belichick, who I'm confident is quite smart.

No-competes are rarely enforceable. If you are not in someone's employ, you are allowed to work for a competitor. It only gets court-worthy if you're sharing trade secrets. In the world of football, where true innovation is rare, proving that is nearly impossible. In hi-tech, the lawyers who specialize in patent cases make millions. Good luck sorting that out.

Enos is free to switch jobs whenever he likes, the only negative being that his next prospective employer knows how often he switches jobs. And in the coaching world, just try enforcing some bizarre purity test. Coaches move around a lot.

Since I have no idea whether he "honestly" took the Michigan job only to get what he perceived was a better job 17 days later... oh, well. Stuff happens.

The claim in the OP below originated from the RCMB, and was proven to be blatantly false once his Arkansas contract was actually brought to light.

This short term move cleared the way for him to avoid a buyout agreement he had with Arkansas and void the non-compete clause regarding joi(ni)ng another SEC staff.

Actually his contract stipulated in addition to the non-compete clause:

"In the event the University terminates your employment for its convenience, the covenant not to compete shall not apply."

It's well known he was terminated for convenience

This is what I don’t get. Why would anyone ever believe this stupid theory? How could a school possibly enforce it even if it wasn’t specified in his contract? Why would they give a shit where he went if they fired the entire staff? It just doesn’t make any sense.

Coming to Michigan did not impact it. And even if in place, it was to end on Feb 15th.

Now whether he is smart or slimey for other reasons is a different question. But the non compete is a false narrative.

I consider it slightly underhanded, but only slightly. It's not like he was a primary recruiter who jumps to the NFL just after national signing day, after promising the sun the moon and the stars to a bunch of kids.
