Csonte York Suspended Indefinitly

Submitted by dayooper63 on

Per a U-M release, sophomore receiver Csont'e York is suspended indefinitely for "failing to meet team standards."

EDIT: Here is the press release

The following is a statement from University of Michigan head football coach Brady Hoke:

“Csont’e York is suspended indefinitely for failing to meet team standards and will not report for fall camp. We demand that every person in our program represent the University of Michigan and the Michigan football program the right way on and off the field. When people fall short of that, there are consequences.”

Sorry to hear this, but yay for WR depth. If anything this gives these 2014 WRs more practice reps and chances for playing time.

I wish we'd have one offseason without this kind of bad publicity. Nevertheless, all the best of luck to the Csont'e. Hope he gets things figured out and comes back stronger and smarter because of it.

But in my almost 4 decades of following Michigan football, there is pretty much one or two incidences every year involving football players.  In the old days, a lot of them would get swept under the rug or you simply never heard about it in the press.  I also think Bo dealt with things pretty strictly and if someone did something bad he was gone.  These days, EVERYTHING gets out due to social media, the web, and the local press just itching to find things to make Michigan look bad.  It isn't like Michigan is the only school with these incidences if that makes you feel any better.

Here's the Ann Arbor News story, which doesn't say a whole lot more than what has already been posted (LINK)

It does mention that, as of this time, he has not been charged with anything but is the subject of an investigation per the tweet posted above.

I guess I still don't see your point. We still don't know what York did (beyond some board rumors) or what his punishment will be. Are you just being preemptively outraged that his suspension is more than Clarks? Are you just feeling prolonged outrage that Clark didn't get more? And what does that have to do with people both cheering Clark on this season and wanting York to be suspended?

So what's the goal in your mind?  Is it just to get the kid's head on a platter to make a statement?  Is it because it's in the best interests of the kid involved?  Because it'll be a deterrent for other kids?

Frank Clark's path since that moment sure seems to have been a positive one, all things considered.  Do you think it would have been better if Hoke had kicked him to the curb?  Maybe a couple of games, fine, but if a goal was to get Clark's life back on track, then Hoke's decision seems to be working toward that goal.  (York's case might be completely different, with violence toward another person involved.)

I brought this quote up in a recent thread because I think it's a really interesting issue.  It's from Nick Saban at SEC Media Days, and Saban's a jerk (which is clear here), but it's still thought-provoking:

“I want you to know that there's not one player, not one player, since I've been a head coach that I kicked off the team that ever went anywhere and amounted to anything and accomplished anything, playing or academically.

... “That’s what you all think: What are you going to do to the guy? How many games is he getting suspended? Are you going to kick him off the team? This guy kicked this guy off the team because he did this, and that was a good thing,” he said. “Well, but what about the kid? What happens to him? Well, I’m telling you what happens to him: I’ve never seen one go anyplace else and do anything.”

These are totally different sets of circumstances. It's possible Clark was a stand up player, student and teammate before his skirmish, so he was given the benefit of the doubt. Or that York has had other strikes before this. We also don't know all of the details in either case. Remember when Marvin Robinson was in legal trouble for stealing an XBOX when it later came out it was his old roommate and they disagreed who really owned it since they bought it together? There are stories behind all of this that Hoke usually finds out but we don't. So it's dumb for any blog poster to discuss Hoke' "consistency" on any of this.

but really? Whenever a player at any school does something beyond petty shenanigans (like slide across a car hood, etc) I shake my head. You're going to school for free in exchange for your ability to play a game. If what I'm hearing is true, ffs, why bother unless you don't want to play? This isn't the 70s. Also, yes, Bo would usually get a chance to quietly punish a kid back in the day. UM was very much in the mold the SEC is now when it came to police helping out a team. Unless it was very serious you'd rarely hear about it.

I am sure the team already knew. Is there some reason they couldn't do this announcement last week? Seems like we are starting camp on a negative instead of getting the bad news out if the way before the guys report.
