Cowherd Reports Urban is done in Columbus after this season

Submitted by Unicycle Firefly on November 19th, 2018 at 2:53 PM

So, this should obviously be taken with the biggest grain of salt possible, but Colin Cowherd is reporting that two "trusted sources" are telling him that Urban Meyer will leave Ohio State after this season.

Cowherd is definitely an insufferable blowhard 99% of the time, but he hits fairly often on his "trusted sources."  Either way, this is a delightful thing to see reported in mainstream media the week of The Game.

We hope so, right?  And they do deserve it.

But I doubt OSU falls into that trap.

They have the advantage if seeing what happened to Michigan when Carr failed to keep up in his last few years and then they hired b-level R-Rod and Hoke (see what Brian says on the front page).  OSU won't make that mistake.  They will go get the best possible candidate available.

Still, there is no way the next guy will have as much success as Meyer has had.

First, Michigan was down or just emerging from being down during most of Meyer's time at OSU.  Penn State was also down due to sanctions. The next guy will not have such an easy path.

Second, there is no Meyer-level candidate--not even close--that will just fall into OSU's lap this December as happened when Tressel was forced to resign.  No one out there is remotely close the the level of hire that Meyer was when OSU hired him.  They could get stuck with a promising but uncertain prospect like Matt Campbell from Iowa State.  Could work out great.  Or it could go sideways.

Best hire might be Bob Stoops.  But he is 58.  That is not too old.  But it is far from ideal to start over with a 58 year old coach who has been retired for 2 seasons.  And, while a very good coach, Stoops is not as good as Meyer.  Stoops would keep them winning (no decade wandering in the woods), but not at the 11 win per year average that Meyer did.

Yes he was B-level.  Maybe not if one bases it on what dudes on ESPN were saying, but...

Look, that search was run in an incompetent way.  They just thought they could do things in a lazy way and the winning would at least continue (even improve on most of the late Carr results).

But they did not really take the process very seriously.  And OSU won't make that mistake.

It's felt like that last season of Florida all year, just with Ohio State eeking out wins instead of finishing 8-5 or whatever, even down to having a terrible coordinator everyone in their fanbase hates.

My first thought was that this shouldn't surprise anyone. Then I wandered over to 11 Warriors and they pretty much unanimously expect him to return.

If he does leave, I know where I'll be spending most of my time.

In the same segment  Cowherd also said Brian Kelly very well might go to the NFL. And if he does John Harbaugh would be the #1 name for ND as a replacement. Also said John could be a candidate for USC. His sources say John would be very interested in a big time college job if him and the Ravens part ways.

Huge grain of salt and lots of what ifs, but it would be a pretty insane world if Jim vs John was happening in college next year, 6 years after they met in a Super Bowl.

If there are changes within the AD he'll have a miracle health turnaround and pretend like it was never a big deal, that the media ran with speculation.

If there are no changes he possibly retires. I'd actually bet on the former.

Don’t know if it is true. Wouldn’t surprise me if Cowherd is doing this just for clicks.

Just hope that if it is true, Michigan can give him a thorough ass kicking on the way out. In front of all his players, family, friends, fans, worshippers, and those who make no distinction between Meyer and God himself.

Let's say it is true, who does OSU try to get? This seems like a weak year for coaches, but obviously a lot of guys who normally wouldn't be available would show up for the OSU job as Meyer has turned them into the country's second best program, imo.

Obviously I want the OSU version of Brady Hoke, but we aren't that lucky.

He gone!

I mean, eventually... he's not going to coach OSU forever.  But Urban might be out after this year, it wouldn't be that big of a shock.  "I can't do my job because of health issues and relentless unfair attacks from the media" etc

Didn't cowbell predict Jim Harbaugh to an NFL team right before he came to Michigan?  I recall he doesn't have a great track record with his "predictions"...wonder if he used the same "sources" as last time

Awesome.  Hopefully Harbaugh banishes Urban, like he did in many respects to Pete Carroll.

Whats your deal?

Go Blue.

It sure looks like Meyer is currently executing his Gator exit strategy.

That said, if I had to guess, I think he returns next year and overhauls his coaching staff, especially on the defensive side.

Fking great, now the team will be playing this weekend for his legacy or some sh**

thanks cowherd.

(btw i wouldn't be surprised in the least, i think drake is still holding his trump card after the board forced the 3 game suspension and the ryan day coach in waiting rumor was the writing on the wall)

Holy crap, no.

No no no...

NO NO NO!

Back in 2015 his "trusted sources" stated that the new coach was definitely NOT Harbaugh or Miles, and that our fan base "would love the hire".  He pounded on this for two whole days, saying he couldn't give up the information yet.

Next day, Harbaugh was announced as the new coach.

Screw Cowherd.

We'll see how it plays out, but I will say, he looked unwell on the sideline versus Maryland, and I am not really joking here. He seemed like someone who was genuinely preoccupied with other things, whether it was health or something else.
