Could Bryan Mone play this year in place of Glasgow?

Submitted by Dawkins on

There's some speculation on Twitter that a "decision" will need to be made on whether to burn Mone's redshirt in light of Glasgow's injury. Is this even a realistic possibility or just wishful fan thinking?

Then you need to get him on the field if he is the best option for the position. Can't worry about the next few years, just worry about winning next week and if he provides positive value to do that, then get him on the field. If not ready or in a position to contribute, then don't burn it.

players get to decide whether to redshirt in any case? It really is not just his decision, is it? Maybe it is different because its a medical, but if he is full go it would seem that the coach would have some say here. Interesting question. Not selfish. Who knows, he might be begging to play with the stakes as they are. Could it also be said it is selfish not to play him?

Actually, I do. But I study sports-rehabilitation. But, what I don't study is football-coaching, or at least, I'm only beginning to.

Rationally speaking, I have no clue what his specific conditioning is.

But I also know that keeping his physical conditioning up is easy as pie.

In fact, easier, as he has no game-reps, practice-reps, and thus has more time to focus on rehab/proper recovery time.

You can absolutely keep in top condition with leg break. And despite being in a cast.

In fact, the evidence has been clear for decades that weight bearing and resistance training as early as tolerable is best for healing breaks.

Many athletes come back (thanks to modern training methods/better understanding) saying they feel "stronger than ever", and this is largely true (not to mention the psychological effect that can actually make this true by itself). In fact, a physical injury can further enhance an athletes proprioceptive intelligence (for lack of a better term), as they will be forced to become more in-tune with their physicality (notice the trend toward athletes taking dance classes, doing yoga, and Harbaugh emphasizing multi-sport athletes--that's kinesthetic IQ). But this is all icing on the cake. Summarized, I have no doubt of his physical abilities, particularly with him being at a world-class institution like UM, with acess to the world's best.

The real difficutly will be with is game-rhythm, and in-game skills e.g. hand-technique, body-positioning, play identification. Of which I am relatively ignorant.

But I'm under the impression that DT, of all the other positions is one of the furthest towards brute-strength on the physical-versus-mental spectrum.

I mean it's all speculation as far as him returning this season. But I have no doubt about his raw physical recovery. Bone breaks are easy peasy.

That would be an interesting position to be put in, especially if you are going to miss out on a year of football but on the other side of the coin the games he would be playing in would be pretty awesome: Penn State, Ohio State, possibly Big Ten Championship against Iowa, and possible College Football Playoff scenario.

But it's still his choice to make.

Just like it was Shane's decision whether or not to offer to burn his redshirt in the Minnesota game.

At this point, it's 100% on the player and we shouldn't pass judgement on the decision. I have no issue if a guy says "no, I'd like to take that year and help the team for a full year down the road" or if I guy said "no, I want to play now."

As long as the player makes the decision, that's all that matters.

Or Rose Bowl, or other New Year's game - if we win out.

I'm on a mission to stop - or at least temper - all this talk that makes it seem like making the Rose or other major Bowl would be a disappointment this season.

Let's be real - I don't know what cosmic/karmic forces caused Blake to drop that punt snap, but we have NOT been the same team since. At least on D & ST. The passing game has actually hit a level we've not seen since Henne years.

So I would feel great about winning out and making a major bowl, even if we end up griping about it forever.

SO - IF Mone can physically possibly play, he must play!

Even if he was practicing (which I highly doubt) he can't just become a starter overnight. We need Godin to play better and to tighten up the DL rotation so everyone is put in their best position to succeed.

He's a true soph right now, right? So you'd be losing Mone's theoretical 5th year in 2018 and if he's good enough to start this year then who's to say he wouldn't be playing on Sundays in 2018.

for Mone is the staff's #1 priority. If next man up means (if healthy enough) Mine needs to be part of the D-line rotation, then its gonna happen. Besides, why worry about a season that far into the future when the recruiting pipeline is primed for greatness?

I say do it. I think Mone has the potential to go pro after 4 years anyways, very possible he has a huge year next year and burning the redshirt is a moot point.
