Corey Person Returning for 5th Season with Michigan Men's Hoops

Submitted by chatster on

Saw that Corey Person is returning to the Michigan basketball team for a fifth year to offer some leadership to the team. There’s an intriguing transfer possibility who might’ve been a good fit.

Jake O’Brien, a 6-8 forward who’s got a decent 3-point shot and had been the America East Rookie of the Year in 2009, but has had foot injury problems the past two years, is transferring from Boston University. BU has been banned from the America East conference tournaments because they’re moving to the Patriot League after this year.

There’s a chance he could land at Penn State to play for former BU head coach Patrick Chambers.

The main benefit of Person's 5th year will come in practice.  It will be useful for new wings Nick Stausksas and Glenn Robinson III to learn from an experienced, 2-time NCAA tourney appearing player.

On a side note, I think there could be a very real opportunity for Josh Bartelstein or Eso Akunne to pick up some legitimiate minutes at point guard this year.

Akunne should get mop-up time and two-minute spurts to give Burke some rest, but I wouldn't call it meaningful PT. Burke still will play 35 minutes per game.

Plus, unless they plan on redshirting Spike, they might want to get their freshman some PT because Spike likely will see some decent PT in 2014 along with Walton.

From everything Ive read about this young man, it's a huge thing for U-M, particularly given the loss of senior leadership from last year.  Happy for Person, happy for the team.

This is the goal for 90% of student athletes. It gives him another year to compete and another year of advanced education. In the news release from U-M, it said he was looking at taking master's courses. I know he isn't on scholarship but why wouldn't he take advantage of an awesome opportunity?
