Contenders to win the National Championship in 2016 (Correlation with recruiting rankings)

Submitted by Kewaga. on

I know there is a lot of information out there regarding a team's recruiting rankings and thier chances of winning the National Championship, well ESPN had an interesting article regarding this correlation recently...

Who are the contenders for 2016 (as it stands tonight?):

Alabama,

Clemson,

Florida,

Florida State,

LSU,

Michigan,

Ohio State,

Ole Miss,

Tennessee,

Texas A&M,

USC

PS:  Knock on wood three times (I did).... and not reading too much into this but the last team to win the National Championship without having at least one top 10 class in the three preceeding years was Oklahoma in 2000

This would suggest that Baylor, for example, isn't a contender. They would be an anomaly from a recruiting standpoint, but not that out of the question. It's interesting that Georgia isn't one of the contenders - but they could sneak in by the end of this recruiting class.

They have NFL players on the roster. Corey Coleman, Jay Lee, Spencer Drango, Andrew Billings, Xavien Howard, Shawn Oakman all likely will be drafted this year. Not to mention, they have Shock Linwood, Johnny Jefferson, and KD Cannon are NFL bound after next season. To say, they have lesser talent is ridiculous considering they have a shit load of NFL caliber players on the roster.

make a difference on the field this year???

Down the line surely, but one good recruiting class will not give immediate results.  Even UM is counting more on this class for 2017.

Generally I agree but Saban and Meyer won with a lot of their first full cycle (i.e. 2nd year) recruits in year 3.  Unfort our year 3 team will be very young. Then again so was Meyer's year 3 team and they won the NC.

But bigger picture I'd put a lag on this for about 3 years i.e. a top 5 class in 2020 would mean great things for 2023 team.

That said UM had the #4 class in 2012 and #6 in 2013 which would rhyme perfectly with a monster 2016 year.

Picking a title contender based on nothing but a recruiting ranking is pretty shoddy work.

Five minutes looking as a roster could tell you half of these teams will come nowhere near the playoff.

It's not that they have no chance, they do. But ultimately, Stanford and/or Oregon is going to run up against a team in the NC game that has superior talent across the board. And as the data shows, that talent has prevailed every year since 2000. We saw this happen to Oregon against Auburn in and OSU. We saw it last year with both MSU and Oklahoma getting blown out in the semi finals.

I won't be surprised if Tennessee makes a run at the CFP. Their program is similar to Michigan right now. Plus, the SEC East will have three schools with first year coaches (USC, UGA, Mizzou). They're primed to win their division and were beating Bama this year on the road in the 4th quarter. I was hoping Michigan would play them in a bowl this year too, it would've been a better matchup than UF.

recruiting rankings? Whoever has the most overall NFL caliber talent on the roster. There are several teams who have lesser recruiting rankings but have shit ton of NFL caliber players on the roster. They're the true contenders.

I hear Jimmy could get more recruits if he loosened the khakis a little bit for Netflix and chill during sleepovers.

Another February Recruiting Championship to add to the trophy case, right next to the three consecutive September Heismans and two May Media Hype Championship plaques.
